  1. Depending on the age and make of the motherboard that computer may only hold upto 64MB of RAM. What brand and model computer is it? Some old Pentium and AMD K6 setups used PC66 memory. Some even used DRAM memory instead of SDRAM.
  2. Have you tried logging in as adminstrator when booting into Safe Mode? The Search option may then be available.
  3. It still sounds like the onboard video is failing or possible corrupted video drivers.
  4. Pick up a PCI video card and see if that will work. The onboard video may have gone bad. There isn't a sticker with the model number on the case?

  8. He didn't state that the PC has no Internet access, just that it doesn't have Ethernet capabilities. In other words downloading IE 6 with dialup would be time consuming. As t the rest of your comments he already has an older version of IE which he would like to upgrade.
  9. If it's full screen. The DOS window has taken over my screen! If you are using any version of Windows, type < Alt > and < Tab > at the same time. This will toggle the DOS window into the Windows task bar. From there, right-click on the DOS box in the taskbar and click on "Properties" then the "Screen" tab. You should change the screen selection from "Full-screen" to "Window." Introduction, Commands and Tips

  12. I would not buy a dialup modem online. Go to the nearest mom & pop store, Best Buy, CompUSA and etc. Some of the cheap modems ship with crappy drivers on a floppy or CD. Many times you will have to search the internet finding a driver that willl work, Some cheap brands don't have those drivers available at their sites. At least if you buy local you can return the modem if it doesn't work on your system.
  13. There are 8 listed in my city 3 of which are within 6 blocks of me. I know there are more perverts than that near here. Of course many of them are still doing time.

  17. Probably JavaScript (scripting) is disabled in your browser. This can be a good thing though due to the many exploits involving JavaScript.
  18. With IE go to Tools > Internet Options > General tab. I set the Days to keep pages in History to 0. You can clean that day's History by clicking on the History button. In fact at the end of the day I click on the Delete Cookies, Delete Files (including offline) and History buttons. I aslo open Explorer and check my Temp folder to see if any new additions are there and delete them. I then run AdAware SE. I rarely use IE but still follow this routine even after using Opera all day. It is a good habit to get into. If I notice Panda alerting me during the day I also run a scan for virus/Tro
