  1. Many utilities (such as CCleaner) automate the deletion of DAT files. Be aware that those files may keep track of some things you may not expect (favorites icons for example) so there may be unintended consequences (none serious).
  2. And you're singling out only the first year salaries. What percent of teachers are only in their first year? Well, it's been fun playing with statistics but I've been warned away from controversy before so I'll drop it, especially since I don't know what I'm talking about. <edit>
  3. I'd love to come down and discuss how your perception does not match reality, but after all my recent CUTS in income I can no longer afford the trip. I'm on track to make ten thousand dollars less this year than last, and that's just salary. I'm also losing approximately five thousand dollars in additional income (rentals). So ... Are they hiring any teachers in TX? I'd settle for a starting salary of nearly 40K.
  4. I suspect it began as a study of the motion of the human body and morphed into ... I have NO idea. Figure falling endlessly while being bounced around by balloons. You can click & drag the figure to ... Help? Cause painfull looking face-plants? (Flash animation so takes time to load.): Falling Figure <edit> OK, so I started reading the PlanetDan blog and he's pretty funny and has a lot of interesting web finds (some I've seen, many I have not). He's also one of those rabid anti-Bush maniacs (uh-hem) so if you like, here's the above link but with Bush falling: Falling Bush
  5. ... la, la, la ... just passin' through ... la, la, la, don't mind me ... (say what?)
  6. OK, you get my official seal of approval: <edit> Ok, seriously. I love the background graphic, I could live with that many (or is it few?) icons, and I certainly love the on-screen calendar. I was going to ask you about that earlier, what it is, where to get it, but then I remembered: I don't like clutter. I'll stick with the taskbar calendar.
  7. The wonders of the Internet (26.5% increase vs 10.7% inflation?!?): "There were 99,400 full-time teachers in 1999 who were still employed as teachers by Texas school districts in the 2002-2003 school year. The average salaries of those individuals increased $9,300 or 26.5 percent between 1999 and 2003. Inflation over the same period was 10.7 percent [source: Texas Education Agency PEIMS data] In 2001-2002, Texas average teacher salaries, adjusted for cost of living, ranked 16th among the 50 states. [source: American Federation of Teachers, Survey and Analysis of Teacher Salary Trends, 2002]
  8. While I didn't mean to say teachers should pay out of their pockets, I was aiming more for school districts should allocate their funds for the benefit of the students (and we all know where a lot of waste actually occurs), I'm not feelin' too sorry for the teachers. A table from Illinois Teacher Salary Study shows they aren't hurtin' any (copied from PDF table so formatting skewed): Table 5. MEAN PAID SALARY FOR FULL-TIME CLASSROOM TEACHERS* ** 1998-99 % Inc. 1999-00 %Inc. 2000-01 %Inc. 2001-02 %Inc. 2002-03 %Inc. 2003-04 % Inc. 9. What the hey? I thought if a leinholder obtained the insurance it would be some ridiculously, outrageously high cost policy. Either I was wrong or your bank did you a favor -- Neither of which is even remotely possible ... I wouldn't call mandatory insurance a tax as the proceeds go to private companies rather than the government, it's closer to an "unfunded mandate." Not as clear as using the word "tax," but it's an accurate description. [rant] And speaking of unfunded mandates, I can't stand paying for all the mandatory equipment required for school that is in addition to all the taxe
  10. You mean you're wise to the "Jack up the prices 'til it hurts then bring it down a little but still much higher than it used to be and everyone will breathe a sigh of relief thinking gas is cheap again" trick?
  11. I'll have to do some searching (so I'm bumpin' this) ... I also have an AWARD BIOS and I'm pretty sure I disabled the mem-test via the BIOS 'cause I haven't seen it do that in years. Unless I'm confusing it with some Windows startup setting (which I doubt). <edit> Yup, it's a BIOS setting. All the web searches point to a BIOS setting (often called "fast boot" or something similar).
  12. And remember that even if stuff doesn't make sense at first, the bits and pieces of knowledge stick in your brain. In later lessons you might go, "Oh yeah! I remember that!" So you're not wasting your time even if you don't think you're 'getting' it now.
  13. Ttopic title reminded me of this site: Wilderness Survival Guide It's not just for wilderness survival though, many of the skills would come in handy if you're in a Katrina-like disaster.
  14. Reminds me of a program I had before the meltdown -- wasn't a screensaver but used actual photos of stellar objects and you could 'fly' where ever you wanted. It was cool to plot a course to, say, the moons of Jupiter, or an asteroid or comet, or do flybys of the planets or stars. I will NOT be able to remember the name or where I got it, durn-it ...
  15. IF you feel you've done everything you can think of, AND you're tired of the problem, AND you have all the necessary backups and OE disks, a fresh install would ENSURE you have the best possible setup and no interference from other programs/drivers/malware. That may not be worth it if you don't already have the needed disks and backups, but it might be a good time to think about obtaining the disks and creating the backups.
  16. Isn't that the same guy who wrote tech support about his "retractable drink coaster" being broken?
  17. I haven't done the particular search on the Logitech site for you (yet) but in my past experience using their site: If you don't find your product listed look in the "Other" category. It'll be there.
  18. Trusted Computing: Tells you nothing 'cept that you shouldn't trust trusted computing. They didn't say one word about what it is exactly, just that I won't like it (according to them). Yes, they mention a site, but that video didn't make me curious enough to visit. In fact, their paranoid vision made me, always the Devil's advocate, want trusted computing even more, whatever it is! (JK) Virtual Girlfriend: She's certainly a good actress, I have to go now to do a Google search for "Monitor Windshield Wipers" ...
  19. Even if it doesn't apply to this particular problem I agree it's important to remember -- active anti-spyware scanning takes a lot of power. On my older system it practically grinds to a halt, I have to turn off active scanning.
  20. Where did you obtain the screensaver? I occasionally try out screensavers though I never actually use them anymore (I guess I just like pretty graphics). I only obtain them from sites I trust, but it THAT isn't safe I'd like to know.
  21. Unless it's your version of God you wish to promote that is. (Ok, ok, no controversy, I know, I know.) It always bothers me when people try to define the founding of our country in religious terms all the while ignoring the effort and intent to leave our country's religion undefined.
  22. Don't remember if you've done it yet but use Hijackthis and post the results in that topic --
  23. [reply rant] Arrghh, "claims." A moron stripped my car, totalling it, and the adjuster came out. He's circling every little scratch, every paint bubble, in a ten year old car yet, to lower the amount paid. "Oh, a bird crapped on it, that's gonna cost ya!" (JK on that one.) It was an old car, and I guess on that one and another old car that someone crashed into I did get enough money to buy another car in exactly the same condition as the ones I lost: Totaled. I kinda thought you insure against a "loss" to replace what you lost (in both cases I lost use of a fully functioning car), but that's
  24. Re: Don't shoot the messenger. Didn't someone recently post asking or warning about the additional software 'supposedly' installed by YM without your permission? That article clearly debunks that and this quote explaining it: "... The installer discloses very clearly what is going to be installed. Right at the top and written in great big letters, it says "Choose the Products to Install". If you click the link for a custom installation, it lets you deselect all of the extra stuff ..." [emphasis added] Sounds familiar ... Oh, like nearly every piece of software I've installed in the last five
  25. Short for sure ... If you're comfortable working inside the case while it's powered up you could start it up while on its side and -carefully- see if anything wobbles, wiggle this and that. If you aren't familiar with working on 'hot' electronics and would still like to try you could use a non-conductive probe to move things (specifically a 'plastic' screw driver, but that's a fairly specialized tool and you probably don't have laying around). And if you aren't completely familiar and comfortable with working inside a hot case do the same with the unit unplugged using your eyes (and ears) to s
