  1. THAT might be the way to go: Disconnect after X minutes of inactivity (funny, I can't find that setting right now). It's OK to leave the dialup dialog on screen as long as it states it's disconnected (unless there's a reason it must be closed). Of course that's not quite the same as closing it rightnow ... but it's another option.
  2. Ouch, I did a websearch for "aopen 16xdvd-rom/ amh" (without quotes) and got lots of "won't play DVDs" from other forums and sites. You could search through all that stuff, or get your money back, which is what I might do if'n I was you.
  3. And I have to wonder about all the other background applets that look for updates and such: How does Windows determine that you no longer need a connection?
  4. I must've missed that the first time 'cause that, actually, is my earliest memory: Sitting on the floor looking at the outlet -- hmm -- I think this fork will fit -- right -- in -- hereZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!
  5. I've been hearing this for thirty years, through shortages and wars and high prices and I don't know what else. What would it take to change the way we live? None of the above makes our country as a whole want to give up anything we've already got, so ... what? If any alternative energy source was economically feasible it would be in greater use already. Sure, prices are coming down, but they ALL have hurdles of their own to overcome. And the same just-say-no-niks who claim we must stop using petroleum because it's damaging to the ecosystem also block attempts to use alternatives (solar cell
  6. I may be wrong, but it would be unusual for your workplace not to usa a proxy of some sort. Eh, I guess the technie knows more than I do about the system. I'm sure it's just some setting you have to change though I don't know what that might be. As for reading it in FF and having it available later, I don't see why this would be a problem unless you delete the messages off the ISP's server. <edit> Your ISP settings allow you to choose how your mail is handled, to be deleted or not. Don't know how to be diplomatic about people suggesting someone scrap the product they use ("I use X," "I
  7. I learned left from right in grammar school so I always had to picture the gymnasium; the office on the left, the girls gym on the right. I wonder when I stopped doing that? It had to be only recently (and I'm fifty!). Confessions: 1) I have such poor memory I have had to become obsessive compulsive in order to survive (keys go here , papers go here , etc.). If things aren't where they belong I will never see them again 'cause I won't remember where to find them. Family and friends think I'm OC but actually, I have no short-term memory. 2) I am a s-l-o-w learner. I'm considered intelligent
  8. Yeah, but what do YOU see when you stand out back and look around? I see house after house after ....
  9. Ooo, ooo! How about Ctrl+Alt+Del? In Task Manager you can then hit the first letter of the program you wish to end, then the key combo for End Program. For me it would be: Ctrl+Alt+Del T Alt+E I haven't test it <g> but I suspect I'd get an Are You Sure type of dialog that'd just require one more key combo (or Enter, depending on the default button in that dialog).
  10. If you're sure it's not a power supply problem I'd suspect interferrance. Depending on the type of transmitter it could be tough to track down or eliminate. You may have to resort to a different type of keyboard.
  11. As networks get better I was getting higher speeds too (often able to download files at OVER 56K!). Enjoy your local phone company's investments. Prices here have FINALLY come down on DSL, though always with a 'gotcha' of one kind or another; for six months, for a year, you have to pay for other services you may or may not want, etc. I called my ISP and said, "This is what I can get if I change ISP, what can you do for me?" They matched the best offer. So after about ten years of dial-up I've finally got DSL at a reasonable price. <edit> So far the only absolute advantage is I c
  12. Formatting would erase everything on the drive: No trace of any software, virus or otherwise, would be left on the drive (there are some minor exceptions but are unlikely to be important here). If your friend has the original software, on individual disks, formatting would be an acceptable option. All data not backed up before the problem would be gone though. There's a post here somewhere that lists dozens of online scans that may be able to locate and fix the problem without resorting to a format, someone may be able to post a link for that.
  13. That's a pretty specific and esoteric bit of music you're looking for and the odds of another person having a link for you are slim (unless they do a lot of Web searching on your behalf, I gave up after the third page or results). There are dozens of TEST CDs, however I'm not sure that's what you're looking for.
  14. Scattershot thoughts on the subject at hand: I can't contribute to 'what price do you pay' because I never look. Local prices never vary enough to make a trip to another station to save a few cents worth the cost of my time and the gasoline necessary to make the trip. I'm financially strapped so I've pared down travel to the minimum anyway. If prices doubled I still wouldn't look, I have to buy a certain volume no matter the cost. I've always driven to obtain the best fuel mileage, even when I had a Mustang Cobra I can honestly say in ten years of ownership I 'floored' it less than ten ti
  15. It may either be finding hardware that's fax-enabled or is trying to run a setup program left over from ... something. Is there a fax-modem in there somewhere (whether or not it's ever been used, I don't know if cable modems have this ability but check that out)? Have you used a startup utility to uncheck unecessary startup programs?
  16. In addition to the "exact file name," be sure you don't have Windows set to "hide" known file extensions when you look for the file name. The important part of the file name is after the 'dot' or period, i.e., EXE or COM or whatever. If Windows is hiding the known file extensions it could be hiding a malicious program that you THINK is what you originally wanted, i.e., PROGRAM.EXE.VBS You'll think you're running PROGRAM.EXE but actually run a malicious Visual Basic Script. (Bad example as the EXE part would also be hidden, but I'm still half-awake so it'll hafta do.)
  17. I'm sure you have the best of intentions but I wouldn't be happy running a program that bypassed security settings. If it's just for your own use I would understand though (not that I have a solution for you). Veering off-topic a little, another post listed several online malware scan sites. On one I tried the scan and up popped a "do you want to install such-and-such" warning. Nowhere on the page did it mention that this might come up. So, was it legit? I don't care really, it didn't warn me so I just got the hell out of there. In your case a simple message saying what to do if that warning
  18. My brain hurts. I can't think of a way to do this quickly using Windows' built-in features (reach around and unplug the modem?). Darn "graphical interface!" I haven't used macros or scripts in a long time, as I recall they can get quite complicated when you have to add pauses (how long? does the delay need to change?) and/or 'click' on a particular spot onscreen (will it always be the exact same spot? what if the resolution changes?).
  19. I was wondering when politics would rear its ugly head here. Same ol' pap. As for the OP, I'm tempted to try that site to see if I get the same results, but I have reasons to keep a low profile so I am waiting for someone else to take the dare first.
  20. Oh yeah and amen to that. Hasn't happened in a long time for me, but they sure had trouble with it a while back. It does sound like Norton isn't reporting its status correctly to Windows (I'm not familiar with how Windows communicates with other vendor's products), thus it is a Norton problem and they should be the ones to fix this. I'd test Norton first, and right now, to be certain that it's working. There is a downloadable innocuous "virus" that will set off antivirus programs if they are working properly. Norton may have this available or you can get it at other antivirus sites. If Norto
  21. It's gonna be tough without actually seeing what's onscreen to figure out a shortcut. Alt+F4 is the Windows shortcut for closing "a" program ... I got that (though it might help if I knew what program he's closing). Then there's a wait for ... what? ... to "read"? Alt+F4 doesn't immediately close that program? Is it just a confirmation dialog he's waiting for? Does he wind up with a large number of windows or subprograms open? Then there's the "Dial-up Properties." Is this the Windows dial-up properties applet/program/folder? Or the name of a dialog box specific to the program he's using (wh
  22. You have to be careful putting humorous sayings on babies, some people who believe they must poke their noses into everybody's business have no sense of humor. I gave a friend a "Spit Happens" shirt for their baby (back when another spelling was a popular saying). a woman scolded them for having a "nasty" saying on their, poor, defenseless kid. I wasn't there when that happened and the ol' biddy should thank her lucky stars I was not.
  23. Sounds like a corrupted program, I'd uninstall then reinstall. <edit> Guess I'm sometimes too brief. When an error refers to code, that is, internal program code rather than Windows errors (confusingly also called 'error codes'), the program is not functioning properly at all (as opposed to having difficulty interacting with Windows or other programs, which would generate those Windows 'error codes'). If the program cannot even run itself, there is a corruption or missing component. The easiest way to fix that is to uninstall then reinstall.
  24. How about: and: Home food delivery so I don't have to leave the boards to buy groceries.
  25. I don't know what this says about me or my life, but that one made me laugh out loud.
