  1. To summarize (to see if I got this straight): You have USB devices that work as they should, you installed another, a hard drive, formatted and partioned it (how exactly, if you cannot see the drive in Explorer?), device manager sees it and shows no trouble, yet it does not even show up in My Computer or Explorer -- and it DOES work on another system? Ok, my brain hurts. I'm gonna hafta think on that one.
  2. Wow! I love those planes! Please tell us the story behind the shot. Even though everyone's used to the old resolution I recommend bumping it up. It does take some time to get used to, but the benefits FAR outweigh any difficulity in adjusting. Hope you saw the Windows shortcut mentioned in tips&tricks: Pressing the first letter of the icon you wish to select -- I still can't comprehend having to look at that many icons!
  3. Wow! What an in depth analysis of the issue, and an interesting turn of events since the guy works at the University cited in the paragraph. I was disappointed somewhat that my analysis, that the words are easily distinguished using context, was only a small part of the discussion -- I think he got that wrong, it plays a major role -- but the whole thing was interesting reading. Some of the links he gave that I wanted to follow up on were in other languages, darn it. I found this interesting: " ... compare the following three sentences: 1) A vheclie epxledod at a plocie cehckipont near the U
  4. If you want Windows to do something that's not a built-in function it's almost always possible to get that function through shareware. A web search for: "always on top" utility (include the quotes) brought up many utilities that can make any window stay on top. It may not be as clean a solution as choosing an option, but if you really would like that window on top it's worth looking into.
  5. (Oh yeah, you're gonna start a whole 'nother round of posts if you're bringing up insurance companies!) I'm sure no one you spoke with brought it up for good reasons. Like; Some are not involved in billing so had no idea the bill hadn't been paid, while others assumed you were a deadbeat and didn't want to confront you. Once they send the bill to the insurance companies it takes months to hear back, then there's months of negotiating if they don't pay the whole thing right away, then there's months more while they wait for that actual payment. By then any amount NOT paid is ALREADY past due
  6. Where's the smilie for "I'm so friggin' jealous?" Oh yeah, and it's great to see where your handle comes from.
  7. I'll give FEMA and Homeland Security a teesy bit of slack because they have not had to deal with this large a situation since their reorganization (which should not have been done, 'nother story). Yes, it would have been nice if they had all this figured out, all the 'who's responsible for whats,' BEFORE disaster struck, but we ARE dealing with government bureaucracies here. If you can name a government bureauracy that isn't inept I'll consider retracting that small bit o' slack. As for "new" vs. used supplies, they aren't saying you don't know how to wash a blanket, they're saying they don'
  8. Good point as he didn't state right off the bat that it was a DSL connection. The dial-up properties are not used for DSL, which is more network-related. If you ALSO need a dial-up connection then it would still be an issue.
  9. It works for some items on your screen, but not graphics rendered via overlays, i.e. video. You'll need special screen capture software for that.
  10. Do you have any other working USB devices? If not I'd get hold of one to see if USB is properly enabled at all. There may be other drivers required by '9x to see the drive throughout the OS.
  11. It's more about reading several words at once than just reading whole words. If I gave you this single word from the story: mses It wouldn't be clear what it was, but: a taotl mses Allows you to get the word by it's context.
  12. Homeland security is apparently responsible for quite a bit of the delay in getting help to the hurricane victims: Red Cross Efforts Stymied By Homeland Security Portion: MG: Well, the Red Cross, Hugh, had pre-positioned a literal vanguard of trucks with water, food, blankets and hygiene items. They're not really big into medical response items, but those are the three biggies that we saw people at the New Orleans Superdome, and the convention center, needing most accutely. And all of us in America, I think, reasonably asked ourselves, geez. You know, I watch hurricanes all the time. And I see
  13. There are people like that, and then there are people who are appalled by people like that. Thank God for those who recognize and are repelled by the low-life scumbags of the world. Not that my brother's a low-life scumbag or anything, but I do remember when I was a kid he gave me some business advice (he's much older) along the lines of, "You have to step on people to get ahead." Yup, I was appalled. Still am. But I've seen it happen time and time again, so yes, there are people like that, then there's the rest of us.
  14. I was kidding! Yeah, I think we got it: The wire is never used and is probably cut for technical or legal reasons.
  15. I think we just disagree on what constitutes a significant event. I have an older system with an older OS so paging, available RAM and resource useage are still significant issues. I had a "significant event" not too long ago and lost a lot of data, thanks for reminding me about anandtech, gotta put it back in my favorites. <edit> Ohmygod, read that public message board post regarding BV. Someone has a real tick in their nickers to go through that much trouble over someone else's website (makes me wonder what the motivation was, hard to believe anyone is that altruistic). I see many
  16. Here's the parts I understood from your post:
  17. What Internet service do you use? It's possible the settings for your service are not correct. You'd have to enable automatic sign-on which, for my particular service, means saving the password and checking off a box to sign on automatically. As for the Internet Settings dialog box, many malware programs attempt to prevent you from removing them by disabling some Internet services. That can result in problems keeping your settings, among other things. Run all the scans you can, be sure there's nothing running you don't know about. Have you tried any of the other advice given?
  18. That six percent may be only five bucks to you, but multiply that times the population of Michigan*, 6,676,000, and it becomes a loss of revenue of $33,380,000, PER FILL-UP! *Total poplulation includes children, but does not include out of state drivers filling up in Michigan, nor does your savings necessarily reflect an average savings, so for the sake of argument ... let's just go with that number.
  19. I agree and disagree. I agree celebrities have the right to rant, but disagree that they have the right to do so using a public forum unavailable to the rest of us (or at least a forum that is uninterested in what the rest of us have to say). Penn's an actor, my dad was a tool and die man. What my dad had to say is more important to me than what Penn has to say yet Penn, through his celebrity and no other qualification , gets international attention to every word uttered. I guess if you agree with what they say it's "taking advantage of the media's obsession with celebrity to express their vi
  20. From my perspective 1.5-2.0 Meg of memory is significant, and saying it is "paged to disk anyway" is another way of saying "using the much slower hard drive instead of RAM." I certainly see your point and as I stated I can see that it's probably not a big deal if you have plenty of 'headroom' on your system. As for there being few tweaks that make much of a difference, it's not REALLY about speeding things up, is it? How many people defrag like it's a religion? Or fiddle with their folder structure until it's 'perfect?' Or for that matter arrange and rearrange their desktop for that extra mil
  21. Whoa. It's probably an incompatibility between the player/ the video card/ the video drivers. Not much you can do if those three things can't play nice together except change one or more of those items. For example, use a previous version, or a newer one if available.
  22. Well, it's not in here : Buckaroo Banzai Shooting Script - 3rd Draft Where does: "I have no opinion," used to respond to questions such as "Do these jeans make my butt look fat?" Come from?
  23. Oh right, I forgot MS has content. Does anybody use it? Like, ever? Anybody? Hello? OK; Hotmail is probably still used by some people (I used mine so rarely they kept cancelling it just before I needed it again), and their satellite imaging used to be cool (but I use the competition now), I no longer use an IM program, MSNBC leans too far left for me, Groups I know nothing about, Earthlink has a toolbar so I don't need either MS or Google's, I'm not familar with GDesktop but likely wouldn't use it (and it won't be compatible with '9x anyway I betcha). I do have one friend who used MSN
  24. I don't use XP so the site wouldn't be of any use to me but, I'm curious if 'disabling services' is the only advice you disagree with, more, much of, or everything on the site. <edit> Well, I did go there to read some. Yes, it appears disabling services would be more advantageous (if it were possible) for previous versions of Windows and previous generations of computers. Doing so would leave more 'resource memory' available to Windows, of which previous versions were chronically short. It would also leave more memory available for other purposes, and previous generations of computers we
