  1. Unless I missed it you didn't say what OS you're using. If it's Windows '9x you could be running out of system resource memory. Let us know if that may be the case. <edit> Doh, I should have inferred from your attempt at a System Restore that it's XP. Nevermind (darn, the second time I had to do that today!).

THAT'S a keeper! <edit> BTW, a long time ago dialing a "0" was THE way to get around menus, until too many people figured that out and they eliminated that choice. I remember dialing a "0" as I usually did, getting an error message and thinking "Uh-oh, they caught on that WE caught on!"
  3. First thing is to ensure no malware is messing with your computer: Do all the scans you have the patience to do; virus, adware, Trojans, etc. No point in trying to fix it if something's just going to unfix it. Two drivers could be at issue here; the keyboard and the video driver. Keyboard is more likely, the driver you are currently using may be the wrong one (and does not contain the button you're looking for) or it may be corrupted (and thus is no longer able to display that button). In either case, reinstall the keyboard driver (someone else would have to explain that as I am not familiar
  4. A flaw in MicroSoft software? That's SO hard to believe! I take it the XP firewall does NOT automatically update, as most aftermarket firewalls do? <edit> Oh, wait, I see, the fix will be included with the next service patch. Whenever that is. Nevermind.
  5. Okay, storytime folks: I used to follow a fellow employee from our town to work. He has BAD driving habits, too many to list, so I generally avoid being near him as we both drive to work. I pull into the garage at work (in my new Explorer) and he's in front of me. He always stops just inside the entrance to wait for a spot, blocking everyone else and backing up traffic until it spills into the street. I'm extremely patient, believe it or not, having learned that lesson long ago. I wait. Patiently. No one's pulling out and traffic's backing up all the way to the next intersection. But I wai
  6. BTW, I meant to thank your for explaining this well enough for me to FINALLY understand the concept.
  7. If it were me I would take the fact that the file is in a TEMP folder as gospel that it CAN be deleted, and I would do so without hesitation. <edit> Yeah, PARTICULARLY if something was recently installed, many install programs leave bits and pieces behind, conveniently enough, in TEMP folders so they're easy to spot and delete.
  8. This is partly a suggestion and partly a question: If you're doing all that work on a machine that badly infected, before you connect it to the Internet to download repair tools shouldn't you make sure there is a firewall (or router) in place and that it's working correctly?
  9. Okay DOS, I followed that link and you owe me about a buck 'n' a quarter for the time I wasted. Let me know how you plan to pay.

Do you have any protective software running, like a popup blocker? If so check the settings as they usually can be set to block Flash (as mine is).
  11. ... And another urban legend gathers steam ...
  12. <edit> [rant] ESPECIALLY the parts concerning teachers being expected to maintain order with their hands tied behind their backs. Give them some damn authority! Tell parents who don't believe the spawn of their loins misbehave to homeschool the little angels then -- I mean, here, take them home right now! Here's your hall pass, see ya! And don't come back. [/rant]
  13. I like your theory, I can't really come up with any other explantion for them to lock such a post, but the part I like best is, "I know I shouldn't care."
  14. Well ... I no longer worry about such things after I opened my big mouth and got my foot firmly planted in it. I noticed an employee, who looked fit and healthy, using a handicapped space at work. We have hundreds of employees and ten thousand visitors every single day and those spaces really mean something to those in need. I figured she's an employee so I wouldn't be too embarrassed or out of place asking her about her 'need." She was nice about it, now I know why she could afford to be polite about what was essentially an accusation, and told me of her fatal blood disease. That was the last
  15. If you've narrowed it down to mouse actions it could be you are using the wrong driver or the driver is corrupted (in addition to the possibilities others have stated).
  16. Oh yeah! I'm no longer married, just to put your point in perspective. Any attempt to "allow" inaccuracies on my part always came across as condescending (as was my intent -- whether that was a good or the right thing to do or not).
  17. Interesting but probably moot point as the disclaimers likely state the 'guaranteed' number is smaller than they led you to believe. Plus, cable high-speed is particularly vulnerable to slowdowns based on the amount of traffic at any given time, something else probably defined in the small print that immunizes all parties from any 'expected' speeds. <edit> Since there are so many areas that affect speed good luck getting anybody to take responsibility for it. Your system, your local network, the local server, the area server, the identical but reverse path to the source of what you're tr
  18. OK, who was that guy at that other place who always had links up the wazoo? Are you that person? <edit> Yeah, could've been Sultan ...
  19. Well, you are cheating by having those toolbars filled up with icons, but yeah, whoa, that's a lot of icons. I had previously stated I prefer using the start button, and they stated they hate it. Takes all kinds.
  20. I downloaded the trial 'cause it looked interesting but it requires a reboot which I'm not willing to do yet. Looks like what the doctor ordered (or in this case, the OP), but as I suggested, voice recognition software can be daunting (training, etc.).
  21. <edit> Hah! Proven wrong again! Leaving the text so ya'll can have a laugh at my expense. There are plenty of voice-to-text programs but they require a lot of work to maintain and train, I've never heard of anyone expecting such a program to 'listen' to a wave file and make much sense out of it. The WAV would have to be clear and noise free and even then you'd get a lot of gibberish. IME (in my experience).
  22. If disconnecting power for a while didn't reset it, no, I don't have any other ideas. Your avatar reminded me I have this in my files:
  23. Allright! Ya'll have embarassed me into putting SOMETHING on my desktop! It's from a movie coming out soon. And omigod, how can you stand the clutter of a kajillion icons on your desktop?
  24. So you think Ms. Taylor was wrong here?: It is very strange that the years teach us patience - that the shorter our time, the greater our capacity for waiting. --Elizabeth Taylor
  25. Let's say I'm skeptical. The reference to "neocons" with an "agenda" taking over was particularly enlightening considering the ad below which stated in part: "Bush is the real threat." Umm, it looks like neocons are not the only ones with an agenda. So this same lady rented out her property once before for a perfectly legal "rave" (which defies the definition of "rave" in the first place) and both times they were raided? There are no lawyers in that state? Someone AT a rave might not have their facts straight (I heard becomes I believe which becomes this is true ). The video can be of any
