Not a problem... How to mount Windows partitions (NTFS) on boot-up, and allow all users to read only: Assuming that /dev/hda1 is the location of Windows partition. Local mount folder: /media/windows sudo mkdir /media/windows sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab_backup sudo gedit /etc/fstab Append the following line at the end of file: /dev/hda1 /media/windows ntfs nls=utf8,umask=0222 0 0 save the file and close...now do sudo mount -a you should now find your windows drive mounted in /media/windows

Ummmm, it doesn't get much easier than pasting this into a terminal: sudo apt-get install gcc Most anything you need can be found through the package manager (synaptic) Just a suggestion, do some reading here and you'll see how easy alot of things are. edit: naraku9333 beat me...yeah, what he said
-
naraku9333's info about the kernel headers and build essentials probably solved your problem but just to add...following these instructions get it done with no headaches.

Just another link to add for tutorials. http://gug.sunsite.dk/?page=tutorials

I'd suggest putting it on your older system just to get your feet wet, then if you feel like it down the road you could put it on your primary system and possibly repartition to avoid having to install a 3rd drive. As for what distro, as you've likely read, Ubuntu is pretty popular on these boards and elsewhere. It's based on Debian and has most of the same software titles available (if not all). I wouldn't be concerned with the number of software titles with pretty much any major distro you choose, as most have unofficial repositories that add alot more than official repos add as the default.

Heya il_wiccan, Not sure what extension you were using....If it wasn't this one, it's worth a shot. Hope it helps, T.

Just to add a couple things to TheLetterK's reply: I read that as, you'll be getting a separate drive for linux, and is probably the best way to go for first time installs...But, you may want to read up on partitioning for your next time (especially partitioning with fdisk)...And yes, there will be a next time...You sound like you enjoy linux like I did when I first started messing around with it, which means you'll be trying out different distros and just tinkering in general....curious=installing new distros...tinkering=messing something up and reinstalling Ubuntu's default partitioning is

Between the facts that I'm an ex-windows user and wasn't used to multiple desktops and didn't have that option with windows and I try to keep resource hungry apps to a minimum, I'd only use the pager and then it's not even for productivity purposes...more like hiding the windows or wallpaper I'm using from prying eyes.

*Ahem* OK, settle down about the pink shirts...lol Our very own besttechie wears a pink shirt he is very proud of!!!!! Kidding aside, and addressing the original poster....Rumors are a part of high school and there isn't much that can change that, with the exception of the person that started them setting the record straight but even then it probably has gone too far....As for gay bashing/homophobia, alot of times are caused by a persons own confusion about their sexuality and result in self-loathing that they take out on others to fit in...Once again, not much you can do to change that. As

Just in case anyone comes across this thread with the same problem...the instructions in the link from Matt's first post are correct, only ommiting one thing that should be step 5. sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

Happy Birthday, Preston!!! btw, welcome to BT...good to see another familiar geek.
-
Right, and if you don't know any geeks besides yourself, you'll have enough material for a lifetime of making people go away or at least to watch their eyes glaze over.

Heh, I only switched so I'd understand the jokes on slashdot. Now I get the jokes but realize they aren't that funny but I lost my windows CD so I'm kinda stuck with it...lol Kidding aside, all the good reasons for using linux have been stated...btw, I really like TheLetterK's reason. My reasons: ~Free is always a good start ~Major customizability potential. ~Ever evolving and improving ~Tech knowledge gained

cool link Murtu, It said I should use Kubuntu or Mepis, I've tried them both and are pretty good but I actually prefer some Gnome apps over KDEs, I install KDE over Ubuntu...but they're pretty much on the mark for the questions they ask. Edit: and why use IE?...worked fine in FF

Google gives a few hits for that error but I didn't find a single fix. I'd try uninstalling quicktime again and go manually delete C:\Windows\system32\quicktime.qts then reinstall. Not sure it'll help but worth a shot

Mac: we do?...lol...cool, can I be segregated to the part of the forum with the least G4 related threads? quickbasicguru: I'm sure Jeff could give a more accurate number but I watched it go from about 580 to its current 651 in about 11 hours
-
What is this G4 you all speak of? ...and who the (insert choice profanity here) let in all the damn people that knew about this board and only decided to come here once their precious board was defunct? pretty sure you'll all be heading back to the new and improved CFH board (now fortified with 100% of your daily allowance of porn and obscenity...lol)

Everything has been said already so this is just another endorsement for ubuntu In my experience (not that I have a ton), Ubuntu is better than most at detecting hardware...especially NICs and wireless NICs...but as TheLetterK said, YMMV.

heh, good to be seen continuing with the vodka, sea breeze ingredients: 1/2 gal. of Vodka 1 pint of Cranberry Juice preparation: pour liberal amounts of vodka in a dirty glass over ice tint vodka slighty with cranberry juice serves: 2

heh...and it shows. I got curious yesterday so I tried throwing it on my test box and it froze right before the install. It's not like they don't warn you that it's beta either though...and I quote...lol I read quite a few of the comments on /. by the gentoo elitists and they don't seem to think an installer is necessary and it takes away the knowledge gained from learning how to do it yourself...I'd have to agree in this case because I did actually learn a bit from installing Gentoo, (even just following the info from the manual)...but as far as the installer goes, the GUI seems polished and

Yeah, welcome to Besttechie, chris-barry...nice to see a new face in the linux section. Jeesh hitest....ya' ever get sick of a default kde look?...lol...j/k Mine is just something I threw together to meet the forums rated-g standards. EDIT: wtf?...I know I just read hitests post below mine...~poof~ gone now!...either that or I've used too many mood altering chemicals in my earlier years. Anyway, was just gonna poke more fun about the "menu" text on the K button...lol incidently, if you hate that as much as I do... edit ~/.kde/share/config/kickerrc...in the [kmenu] section add kmenutext=fa

Heh, my apologies Scarlett...could of sworn it was CGM...just checked the thread and can't see how I made that mistake.
