Hiya JDoors, usually if an update stalls or corrupts before it completes, no changes are made to anything. The way these things operate is that it is all held in memory until the update completes and then it writes it to the disk. This way, if there is a problem with the update, it doesn't make system changes that are half completed. I can't say 100% that all program updates do it this way, but thats the standard practice, and ones that don't usually have an undo command that returns things to the way they were before the update started. After reading up on this problem, it doesn't seem like it's actually the file mup.sys thats the root cause of the problem, it seems that its just where the thing decides to hang up most times. The various fixes that have worked range from A to Z it seems, but Here is the article that has the most info and trials for you to try.

I have to throw my hat into the "Get SP2" ring as well Stealth, it patches some very important areas that just may have something to do with this issue. The firewall bit is also concerning....I wouldn't recomend running any machine without one these days, dialup included. XP's firewall is included in the basic install, its only enabled with SP2 by default and is easy to turn off. What type of "Problems" are you experiencing here? Depending on what is happening, there are options for some things, but tracking the IP to a specific person is very difficult.

Wish I could, but the City has a very strict policy about internet usage from their network, and they enforce it rigorously. NO SURFING ALLOWED! How ironic.... Just today we had one of our pumpers standby at a gravel pit just outside the city, while the police drug squad BURNED 17, 000 marijuana plants taken in a raid the other day.
