  1. As robshanahan said, W98 does not have to be installed first for the upgrade to install. It first tries to detect any other Windows OS installed and if it doesn't find one, it will then ask you to insert your 98 CD or enter the serial number. After that it will install XP clean, which is the best way to do it rather than upgrading a 98 install. Dave
  2. Glad to be of help tman! Good luck with that recovery, it sounds like almost all your data can be retrieved. If you have any more questions just ask. Dave
  3. First try recovery before you format. If the data recovery s'ware can recognize the drive, it can recover from it. Dave
  4. A few ?'s and a bit of clarification for you. First, refomatting does NOT remove any data, it has to be overwritten to be truly lost. Think of it as a filing cabinet full of folders, and in the folders are a bunch of specific files. To find the files you need, the folders must have a tab that shows whats inside of it A-H I-L...etc. Reformatting only removes the folder tab which essentially tells the OS that it's empty and ok to rewrite into it. In reality the files are still intact until the OS chooses to write over top of them, then they are gone. So, by reformatting that drive and as long a
  5. Hi folks Yes it"s common for hard core gamers to have a few different profiles to login under, 1 for regular computing with normal service and background app's running, and 1 for gaming with minimal services and all background app's stopped for optimum performance with games. It makes it easier to just be able to login under either profile depending on what you're going to be doing, remember tho that the Gaming profile has many things shut down so it's not safe to just be surfing around under that profile and many programs will not function properly either Windows Service Configuration by Blac
  6. Hi Everyone! I think this will be a very popular forum here at Besttechie.net, so for a really quick reference guide, I am going to repost all the guidance/tutorial links from the posts into a pinned thread. I will add links as they are added into the thread. Here's what we have so far: First thing you'll need is a Text Editor and I strongly suggest NoteTab Lite(free) or Pro(paid). I have this editor and have it replacing MS Notepad as the default editor. w3schools.com HTML test lab Site to test your coding. lissaexplains Really easy to learn HTML www.pagetutor.com/ www.echoecho.com/ www.freew

    Bad Mood Day

Way to go Robroy!! Keep it up but remember that it is a constant life-long battle. I had quit for 10 years (cold turkey) and after I left my x-witch...er wife, I started smoking again during the divorce. Highly stressful times can still kick you back into the habit at anytime my friend so be vigilant and HANG IN THERE! Dave

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY SNAXE Dave
  9. Hi ghorjus! Ok, the IDE is hooked correctly since reversing it gave you a constant light on condition. First, floppies are fragile so it could be just bad disks. Can you format a new or used floppy right now? Is another machine able to read from these floppies? Usually it's best to take a malfuncioning drive due to s'ware completely out (uninstall and physically remove it) then reboot without it so Windows knows it isn't there, then power off and reinstall the drive. Upon boot up Windows should recognize new hardware and reinstall it for you. Keep us up on this. Dave
  10. Hey y'all, keep it civil now please. Marty While I'm not a big fan of that type of script either, I also know that it is completely harmless as it only grabs info that is already public knowledge, only YOU can see it, and it cannot be used aginst you in any sort of attack. I have to thank dknoppix for his understanding and removal of that script so promptly...I know it does throw many folks who don't understand it, into a frenzy. I recieved many requests from G4 members to remove those scripts, but since it wasn't a violation of any rules I couldn't. I know we lost Bill Melanson because of it
  11. Have it search the CD that comes with the MotherBoard, it's looking for a driver and it's most likely on that disk. Dave
  12. I would have to say that the chances of getting these going is extremely remote, and recovery off a non spinning drive is very expensive....sorry But i also find it very odd that both drives would die at the same time...almost statistically impossible really.....I have to go out but I'll think on this and post later. Dave
  13. This doesn't look promising from my viewpoint....was there any noises coming from the drive? Was it spinning up completely or did it fluctuate? I take it Safe Mode was attempted? Really tho, if installing this drive into a Slave slot on another machine makes it become unbootable, I see no viable recovery solution. We need another working OS to even attempt data recovery on this drive. Dave
  14. Not a problem old friend! I know what you mean also, I was away from my machine for a little over a month and it feels like I'm starting all over again...things that were so natural B4, I now have to stop and think for a second. Am I getting old?? Dave
  15. Hi Marty Your quick launch icons should still be there, it only shows a few and hides others underneath. You should have a small double >> in the quick launch area, just click on that and the missing items will pop up in a menu style thing. When you have more than 3 quick launch items this is the way XP handles them with a small taskbar. Dave
  16. After spending so many years at TTV and modding their boards for the last few gasps of TTV's life, I was worried about losing the many friends I had found there. So I tried to migrate as many as possible to G4 thinking that we could still all be together in our new, although severely condensed, forums....what a mistake. I apologize to all that I talked into going to that flame-fest. Being a Mod at TTV meant that we had a choice if we wanted to retain those duties at G4, this time with actual teeth to do things. I tried to do my best over there but there are way to many restrictive rules we had
  17. Did someone call for the Fire Dept?? (the last one is for Gal)
  18. Hiya Gal Well, you're 29 eh....you yunguns are so crazy, don't go gettin into any trouble tonite now Of course you know I Love you and wish you the Very Best!!!! Say Hi to Wolf for me Dave

Hi rv56, marko_thomas13 Long time no see! Thanx for the welcome, it sure is nice to see allot of our TTV CFH/TSS regulars here, it's gonna seem like I'm back home real soon. G4 just couldn't match that feel we had over there or here, I still have full Mod powers at G4 and may still do some work over there..mostly to get folks here.. . We'll get B's member count up in the 1000's real soon I think. Dave

    Hey Chappy!

Thx for the warm welcome folks, missed y'all recently but I'll be around here more often now. Couldn't handle G4 Modding anymore....cripes what an immature place that is... I'll cya on the boards (our old TTV saying) Dave

Hi Marty Yup, it's me... Took some time off from all the crap at G4, it's just not the same community we had at TTV 4 sure, but B's board is shaping up to be just such a place! G4 was more than a handful to Moderate with all the immature gamer kiddies, I felt like chokin the life outta some of them so I took a time-out. Looking forward to seeing this place turn into a tight-knit place like our old haunt and so far so good. Hope you're doing good old friend!! Dave
  22. I noticed that you have more than one user logged on, you must run Spybot and Adaware under every user profile to ensure that this is cleaned up properly or it will reinfect. Dave
  23. Hi Nerelda A "Cyclic Redundancy Check" error means that the data being transferred has a corruption in it. This doesn't mean that all the data is bad since it is transferred in small blocks and it could be that only a small portion of the file is corrupt. Data recovery software may be able to retrieve this file but I haven't used any on a floppy disc so I'm not sure which one to recommend for you. Try Googling for some and read up on what they can do for you. I use GetDataBack and R Studio but not for floppies yet. Dave
