  1. Yah...it's a constant barrage from them these days handplane, but your firewall is doing it's job and you have nothing to worry about. I find they come in groups, I get barraged for a week or so and then nothing for awhile, then boom....here they go again. There are tons of hackers in China that are searching for any computer they can take over, and use to circumvent the archaic Internet laws the governments impose on them.
  2. Most older programs don't run on XP because of their DOS routines. DOS programs try to access levels of the OS that XP just doesn't allow access to, for security/stability reasons. That's one reason why program crashes in XP don't crash the entire system like it used to in 95/98 days, XP just doesn't allow that type of low-level access to programs anymore. Sometimes compatibility mode will run most aspects of older programs, but the really older ones usually fail to run at all in XP.
  3. I agree with Iccaros's suggestion, create a limited user account for your daughter & her friends to use so they don't have the user rights to mess things up....too much anyway. Teenagers will ALWAYS find a way to screw things up somehow, but this may help limit the damage control
  4. I also had no problem getting that update to install, but MS uses many different servers to be able to keep up with demand so it could be that one or two servers had a corrupt package. That could explain why using a different server, like from Sethook's link, would get you a good install.
  5. Yes, it would seem that way. It sounds like something just isn't making a full connection and moving it just aggravates it enough to cause this. Replacing the IDE cables is a good start, but that would normally just cause any device on that chain to not function, and you'ld still get some reaction when it's turned on. It could be a small flaw in the MoBo somewhere that is making it lose connectivity at times, or something like that, so it could be a very tough one to track down. Keep us posted on what you try and any results.
  6. I'm against using registry cleaning tools myself, and I've seen far more damage done to systems from them than I ever have seen any good. Unless you have a very specific problem like Pat's, where you know exactly what kind of things to look for, (Symantec/Norton entries), registry cleaners notoriously show false positives and say they can be deleted, when in reality they're still in use. Unless you know how to recognize any false positives that these cleaners may target, I STRONGLY recommend that you don't use them. In almost all cases, a few orphaned keys left behind from an uninstalled progr
  7. I bet you'll find that 1G of RAM is probably all you're gonna need really, unless you do some intensive muti-tasking and ton's of high end video graphics. People tend to think that if the system runs fast with 1G, it'll be really fast with 2G, but the difference you'll notice won't be all that much if at all. At that level of installed memory, the speed of loading apps, building web pages, and other things that relate more memory with speed, just won't get any quicker.

  9. Hi Corrine, and WELCOME!! Always great to see people from other sites that know some of our family here already, it makes it easier for you to just fit right in! Not that it's hard to fit in around here....all you have to do is be a little on the "un-balanced" side mentally, and have the ability to run AMOK (clothing optional) whilst singing "Row row row yer boat..." Enjoy!!

  18. Hi Marty I'm still kickin (barely sometimes), thx for watching out for me buddy. I'm just taking some time to do RL (Real Life) stuff that I've fallen behind with, and trying to get some kind of reasonable health back, but it's a long road and not as easy as I would like. Looks like I've missed allot of b-day wishes....I'd better get working on them. Later

    Browsers

Hi Marty What you're talking about is RSS Feeds, and Avant has the option for this. I believe Opera does also but I think you're friend will prefer Avant browser instead. Thye have to setup the browser to open the feeds that they want opened, but it's really simple as "Feeds" is right on the top menu bar in Avant. It has many of the most popular feeds already configured so all they have to do is choose which ones they want.

Hi all...and Welcome to our 1000th member David de Lyon!!!! We have been wondering just what we could do to celebrate our "1000th" member, and it was very difficult to come up with something that would be appropriate for this, So what we did, was pool up all our pennies & quarters that we've been stashing away over the years, and bought........... A NEW CAR!!!! That's right.....we've bought our 1000th member a brand new car!! Here's a picture of it as I took it out for a test drive... Now David, all you have to do to claim your new car, is answer one small "skill testing question"... "How
  21. Wow...that's cool!! Another hobby I would love to do, but just don't have the time for, is model airplanes. There are jet engines for model airplanes now, and I have some video of some AWESOME planes. Here are a couple of videos that you folks will really like I think... B-52 Jet Or check some out Here, especially the F-14 one...really cool! Now, if I had the $$$ and the time, I would love to build that B-52 one...that is beyond awesome.
  22. Hi Marty Well, since MS has it setup default that almost any problem will cause a restart, it can be any one of at least 100 things that could be causing it. So it's not that the restarting itself that's the problem, it's the countless other things, that are these folks issues, and we just have to figure out which one it is for them. MS in their great wisdom (at least they think so...), knew that people hated that dreaded BSOD so much, that they decided to do away with it and just restart the machine instead. Problem is tho...that the BSOD supplies us with the information we needed to researc
