Have You Ever "spring Cleaning" Your Hard Drive?
tictoc5150 replied to DarkestDream's topic in Open Chat
I usually can't resist a clean install of the latest release, but as I found with breezy, the latest might not be what's better for the hardware than the current release....laptop downgraded to hoary. I seldom run windows, so nothing to clean up there. Probably do another "fresh start" for Dapper on both the desktop and laptop...hardly any work to it anyway since I practically mirror my ~/ to an external drive -

a bit corny but kinda funny...made me chuckle a couple times btw, the typo he was talking about is "withing" should be "within"

What the previous posts said is good until you get to the video editing...for that I'd recommend the fastest processor and the most hard drive space you can afford. If you've ever seen how long it takes to render video, you'll thank yourself for the faster processor....the slower the processor the more useless the PC is to you until it's done.

How Do You Connect To The Internet
tictoc5150 replied to Mainter's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
1.5 Mbs DSL @ home -- serves its purpose quite well... 3 years with verizon and never an internet problem...phone service is another story 3 Mbs cable @ son's house -- where I go to download something huge that I need in a couple hours... pretty good service from Comcast in western MA....I've heard it's not that way everywhere -
ATI cards are a little problematic with alot of distros, running at their best with the proper driver still doesn't compete with an nvidia and their driver. google shows tons of hits for the x700 and ubuntu but this is relatively easy to overcome in an installed version...the only thing I found for dealing with the live cd is trying to boot at a lower resolution by changing the boot parameters...As I'm not familiar with Ubuntu live, I'm not exactly sure how to get past usplash to change the perameters (maybe someone else knows?) but anyway, some have had luck with using: xdrvr=fbdev hope it h

Sounds like you've gotten lucky with the swaps...given that X is configured for video card it is running on, I assume the machines had similar graphics at least made by the same company. you could try: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to reconfigure X

Pete, shouldn't that read "could have" instead of "would have"? Not that I have anything against a UPS but all I've ever used was a surge protector (false security as it may be) and have experienced more than a few outages now and have never had any PC problems from a hard shut down from such. I'm probably just a lucky b@[email protected]

heh, I'm quite good at most of them but since I don't live with my significant other, I choose to trash my place as I see fit....lol

Symantic Uses A Rootkit Too!
tictoc5150 replied to Sir_Siddy's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
damn, there goes my 15 minutes of fame...I saw that folder quite a while back and thought it was odd that it could only be seen in linux -
I've heard that dark pads can kill batteries quicker than light so I got rid of my black pad and found a substantial improvement in life between charges. I don't think I've ever heard why but it doesn't really matter to me anyway.

yeah, thought it was pretty cool when they showed it on techtv a long while ago as one of the free downloads.....I've since switched to linux (primarily) and was really surprised to find it in the ubuntu repositories too.

Help! Computer Keeps Rebooting
tictoc5150 replied to spirittoo's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Sorry if I missed it but what kind of internet connection do you have....are you using a usb modem by any chance?...google gave a vague reference to a driver issue on a Speedtouch USB modem by alcatel when searching the stop code you posted....worth checking for a driver update if you have this modem -
heh, I can't believe it either! just to add...adversity has always brought on my most creative moments...good idea to fire up the multi-track or record right to your hard drive...at the very least you'll come up with some good ideas for potential songs, if not write an entire album

Hey TK, Sorry about the **** you've been going through and I'm sure you already use my stress relief technique but I usually reach for the guitar, play it loud and with violence (pushing the envelope of string breakage). Hope things are better for ya' in '06'

all the advice given so far seems good to me but being the body mod freak I am... <$.02> Odds are you'll probably talk yourself out of it anyway with infection paranoia but... Bozodog nailed it...If tattooed properly in a super-clean environment (using disposable needles or sterilized in an autoclave) and following good after care, it is unlikely that it would get infected...A good artist knows how to deep to go (between dermis and epidermis) so the odds of pigment (not ink) getting into anyones bloodstream is nil. The days of the dark back-alley tattoo parlors are gone (or should be, a

Wow, great site....Thanks for sharing, Chappy

Heh, I don't think I've ever been in a tattoo shop that didn't use either disposable (sterile) needles or sterilize their re-usable needles with an autoclave. My artist is very professional and only wants his art to be the best...That is not accomplished by infecting someone. This is far from my first tattoo (have 7 others prior to this) and have never once gotten an infection...There still seems to be quite a stigma about tattooing but most artists (unfortunately, not all) want you to be happy with your form of self-expression while showing off their skills as an artist...That's best done i

Hey all, if you're anything like me, I usually get myself a better present than anyone else gets me. In fact I usually spend more on myself during the holidays than everyone I buy for combined...lol...That's not to say I'm a cheap b@$t@rd though. Just wondering what y'all bought for yourself.... I actually got myself a couple things this year, 1) being a new set of Logitech speakers for my PC and.... sorry if big tattoos freak anyone out.
