heh, I spent the better part of my vacation last week seeing what kind of mistakes I could make with my old desktop...lol all in all I didn't do too bad...installed Ubuntu (removed it), installed slack 10.1 (removed it), installed FC3 (removed it), Debian wouldn't play nice with my graphics and I borked a gentoo install (gonna take another whack at that )...seems that all the friendlier distros were a piece of cake...wasn't what I was looking for, wanted the challenge of something I hadn't done and have it actually work. Was also wanting to see if there was another distro that I might like m

Well put, KJ I realize not everyone has unlimited resources when it comes to the hardware they run. So, it can be somewhat of an obstacle to overcome when you have something that just won't work, or you don't feel like learning what it takes to make it work. I'll admit that my first linux experiences were riddled with hardware issues that turned me off to it a bit and had me running back to windows but as it's been stated already, hardware issues are becoming less prevalent. I decided to take another whack at it and while I've had a bug here or there Id easily trade MS cds for linux....(no, I

Nice work Michael....checked your page also, quite a few nice ones there...prety bold colors on alot of em'...trying to make peoples eyes bleed?...jk..lol I'm curious as to where you get some of the graphics or if you're making them from scratch - start to finish. I generally grab a nice hi-res pic off of any site if I like it and throw it in the "raw materials" folder for use whenever I get around to it...that folder definitely needs a little reorganization

heh, thanks hitest and you're right.... that is boring, how can you stand it?...lol since getting my new machine and new 1280x1024 lcd up and running, I've had to make new desktops that fit so they don't stretch out when applied...haven't really been all that inspired to do so...but this is what I'm currently using. (yeah, I know...doesn't this guy ever get tired of the nude artwork of Luis Royo?...NO!!! ) edit: came up with this last night...figure I'd just edit the post and kill the last screenshot

I've used Cesar FTP in the past, seemed to work well for my needs. As you can see, there's plenty of shareware and free ones at download.com I'm sure someone else will come along to suggest what they use and to also mention the security risks involved with FTP servers.

hiya guys, I've been working on a little problem for a while....the problem: when using firefox (on Mandrake 10.1), it often gives me the "looking up www.blahblahblah.com" in the status bar...killing me with almost dial-up behavior!!! edit: forgot to mention the relevant hardware used... netgear wg311 wireless card using linuxant driverloader and a netgear MR814 wireless B router. So, I was thinking it was dns or /etc/resolve.conf related and while that did lead me in the right direction for a google search, this thread gave me the extremely simple and effective solution of disabling ipv6 in f

I'm pretty sure Arachnid is using Windowblinds. It's not free but for $20, it gives you about all the eye candy you'd want...tons of different themes besides the purple too.

LOL yeah, I've had those daydreams too whats funny is that most guitarists could play if they suddenly went blind...kinda removes the "eye" from the hand-eye coordination equation....and unfortunately there really isn't anything "like" playing guitar to simulate playing guitar to better your skills. reminded of the old saying..."how do you get to Carnegie Hall?...practice, practice practice!"...lol (note: tictoc never wanted to get to Carnegie hall and uses his musicianship to keep from going bananas)

Apparently these guys were testing that theory...lol I remember someone asked awhile back, if this could be done with one of those little dorm fridges. It was answered that condensation would be too big of an issue to be practical. I'm betting this fridge is just acting as a case and not for cooling.

Hi iccaros, sorry I haven't grabbed a copy of your distro yet, did bookmark it though...since I don't know what WM it uses, what kind of art are you looking for...kde splash, default wallpaper, kinda stuff? (sorry, I'm not too good at icons, if you need those too...can only seem to modify them to my liking) not sure how good it'll be without my predispostion for softcore porn wallpaper have even done the same to my ksplash...lol thanks hitest...and about KDE vs. Gnome....from looking at the two, I would think that Gnome would be less demanding...I'm definitely into eye candy which seems to
