  1. I've met quite a few rock stars, alot of them were just in passing and maybe a handshake but I'll name a couple that were significant for me...Rik Emmit (of Triumph) and Leslie West(of Mountain) played on the same bill and we got to hang out with them for about 2 hours after the show...2 very cool guys. Steve Vai when he was touring with David Lee Roth...he was cool, Diamond Dave has always been a tool. Yngwie Malmsteen (incredible guitar virtuoso) and an incredible @**hole, but was cool to meet him none the less since he influenced my playing quite a bit back then. Ozzy Osbourne, not that I r
  2. I've listened to alot of things over the years...everything from classic rock to jazz to country to classical to blues to hard rock/metal etc. etc. etc.. Since I learned how to play guitar listening to hard rock/metal (still play 23+ years later), that's pretty much what I still listen to, even at the age of 36...No, I'm not really listening to the same bands (well, maybe a couple), there's alot of talented kids out there these days and I've kept a pretty youthful ear...and yes, I listen to the screaming stuff too...lol as you can see, like rv56, "guitar driven" does it for me too. For the new
  3. the keyboard shortcut thing was a joke...lol...my mouse is probably my most important peripheral and favorite ...Logitech mx900 bluetooth rocks! A) tabs and plenty of em' Q) how long is a nap?...(mine was 9.5 hours today....lol)

    Spring?

no problem, hitest I've read it several times now and still get the chuckles from it Liz, when you're posting, you'll see the "http://" button above, click that>paste the url>click ok> type whatever text you want the link to say>click ok...easy as that Liz's Lighthouse Link Weather still ain't lookin' like spring around here yet but no real snow lately, just scraping the car windows a bit....don't think I've even heard a bird yet (not like I'd be able to identify what kind it is if I heard one...lol)
  5. A) Not...I'm trying to use nothing but keyboard shortcuts...yeah right! Q)If you had to choose.... shave your head or your eyebrows?....
  6. I use Nvu, it's better than Mozilla's composer.... why download a complete Mozilla suite for just the composer?
  7. no problem, glad to help out cool that you made it your sig and linked the pic too
  8. Not sure if this is what you wanted....I can come up with something else this weekend if you give me another way to go with it. other than that...size alright?
  9. Thanks, hitest Have you checked out his distro? runs real good, faster than knoppix and has more features and apps than I'd expect for an under 500MB d/load...the only thing I could see it lacked (and that's only my opinion) is the artwork, which is what I'm hoping to provide...I don't consider myself highly skilled with graphic arts but I do enjoy messin' around with it in my free time....wish I could say that the work I just linked to was made using the GIMP but alas, made with PS7...however it was run in linux using crossover office
  10. I totally agree, I don't like bloat in any OS and thought it was pretty cool that you pretty much build gentoo from the ground up, with as little or as much as you want it to have. I might try setting up a gentoo system for regular use someday but this one was just for the experience of installing it and seeing what kind of a mess I could make...guess I'm not too bad, second time's a charm...yeah, there are a couple hardware related errors before getting to X but it's usble once I get there...lol daunting ain't the word for it...lol...more like aneurysm-provoking. but yeah, totally worth the
  11. hmmmm, let me see...I think I'll go with AMD (see sig!!!)...lol and for anyone that has sigs turned off, it's an AMD Athlon 64 4000+...booyah! your current PC, self built or store bought?
  12. Marty, As I have no experience with setting up a dial-up/modem in mandrake, not sure I can be that much help but I'll give it a shot. jcl gave you the link to the driver, but before you install it you need to install the kernel source...Since you said this is a dual-boot system, download the file using windows and save it to C:\ (makes getting to it from mandrake easier) reboot to mandrake to verify which kernel you are running, in a terminal>type "uname -a" (without the quotes)>>>most likely will say "Linux localhost 2.6.8.1-12mdk.......">now to install the kernel source kmenu&
  13. Thanks JD Cool, glad you liked it....after trying out your distro the other day, I got somewhat inspired to help out a little more...while my original bootsplash looked cool and I liked seeing my handywork in action, there was that totally unacceptable (and embarrassing...lol) mistake. I wasn't sure what you'd think about the logo I made up, it just started as something to liven up a drab wallpaper...still think it's a little "eh, so so". I'll see if I can come up with a little more for ya' by your deadline.

    Spring?

heh, I remember it well TT_75, I spent the first 20 years of my life in about a 50 mile radius of Syracuse...including Fulton for a short time....Worst winter I can remember was probably spent in Hastings. I moved to MA in 89 and thought it was funny that these people would think it was snowing out...granted, there have been several times that it has actually snowed here but noone knows how to drive in it and they cancel school for a few flakes....the only bragging rights that MA might have over upstate NY is it gets colder here at times. ahhh, the good old days...brrrrrrrr....lol
  15. Hiya iccaros, Check this stuff out, see if it's what you're looking for. IccarosArt.tar.gz and to anybody that may be curious about "this stuff" Click Here
  16. heh, I missed him saying that too and d/loaded your distro and guess what....lol your xorg.conf did it for me...posting this in full 24bit color from gentoo. too cool!!! I do get alot of screwy errors before even getting to X, might even try to write them down as though go zinging by one of these times...but everything seems to work fine once I get to kde question: when I first try to login, (not as root) and startx, it isn't starting kde, it's starting what I believe is twm (?) and to actually get it to start kde I have to login as root at the bash and then login as me for kde. point me in
  17. I'm not trying to keep the hijack alive, REALLY!!!!...lol...but.... hitest, most of what you said is an acurate assesment, Ubuntu seems like a solid choice for starting linux and hardware research is always a good plan...but...Ubuntu is a text based install, not gui...very simple, none the less...and also since Ubuntu defaults to gnome (a very fast and stable gnome 2.8) for its WM, there's that difference too
  18. hiya murtu52, the first thing I'd check is for driver updates for your graphics card. it sounds like you might be switching between color modes...then again, if you're only noticing just those icons in particular, I may be wrong. the next time it happens, r-click desktop>properties>settings tab> what is it set to? high color or true color?
  19. Hey iccaros, Well, I wasn't really looking at it as giving up....I hadn't really intended to use the system, even if I made a usable system...It was more to be just a learning tool...I installed it on a hard drive that wouldn't meet my needs for much other than the OS and have no plans to upgrade it. but to answer a couple of questions and maybe learn a little more about your live cd suggestion... using onboard video...intel i815 chipset I believe yep, sure did...to the best of my knowledge, used correct settings for everything yep, that'd be the one and this is the part that interests me
  20. Thanks for the words of encouragement hitest. Although this was just a case of RTFM, it did feel pretty cool to boot to an OS that I felt like I built...seemed to take forever to build too...lol I wish it was a little more successful since I really like the whole portage/emerge thing, not that rpmdrake is hard to open and put a check next to something I want though...lol It was a cool learning experience, if nothing else...I'm not sure what my next project is now...all the other distros I've considered seem a little easier that Gentoo...oh no, I've peaked!...lol
  21. hiya TK, we were talking about it in #besttechie chat and I mentioned it sounded like a dns problem with your router but cataclysmcow said it's more likely a dns problem on the ISPs end. Not sure where you'd go with this one. I'd still check the dns settings in your router compared to your ISP actual server IPs. My router recently started getting the wrong dns IPs from the ISP and I had to enter them manually...my problem was to the extent of yours but seemed similar.
  22. well, I got a bit further the second time around but still not to a usable system...I'm actually posting here from gentoo using konqueror though. graphics are totally screwy at 8 bit, the refresh rate is enough to make your eyes bleed...it totally amazes me how many opportunities that gentoo gives a newbie to screw up, not exactly sure why anyone would go through the trouble of using this distro when things are sooooo much easier with most of the newer distros. oh well, try try again (well, maybe someday) and before gentoo goes bye bye: Linux Taylor3 2.4.28-gentoo-r8 #1 Sun Mar 20 06:07:48
  23. Well, since I'm not a total codemonkey (or muffin, if you will ), my pages are about as simple as they come...I've never pre-thought about a page before making it, much less, drawn it on paper. I generally use whatever wysiwyg editor I feel like using (lately, that'd be Nvu) and just start making changes to the blank page. Once done, any subsequent changes would be done with kwrite...and since Mozilla composer and Nvu seem to create valid HTML 4.01 Transitional, that'd be my standards preference...I didn't even have a preference or know how to check html validation until a couple months ago a

Hi Liz, My mother just emailed me this the other day, considering the topic of your post, I figured you'd get a kick outta this....note, there was some adult language in this one and I did my best to edit it all out, sorry if I missed something and offend anyone. Massachusetts Snow Diary AUG. 1 Moved to our new home in Massachusetts. It is so beautiful here. The city is so picturesque. Can hardly wait to see it covered with snow. I LOVE IT HERE OCT. 14 New England is the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves are turning all different colors. I love the shades of red and orange. Went for a
