  1. They are now considering reprimanding the Italian for instigating the issue through his insults.
  2. You can check Startup entries using this http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If any entries are shown to be capable of being disabled at startup use MikeLin's Startup Control Panel, as linked above, to disable them. If you are unsure list them here and I will look at them. Never mess with anything using msconfig other than the Startup entries.
  3. Run these; http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Post a new HijackThis log at the same section of the forum you previously did. Supply a link to this thread along with your HJT log. I still have a feeling that your registry is corrupted and that malware is still present on your computer.
  4. I will gladly do that if it means getting rid of this daily nuisance. I guess my question was if I needed to be sure I was clear of every and anything before I reinstall Windows XP. And, also, since we have a floppy drive, will reinstallation be less tricky (for lack of a better word)? I would get in touch with Dell Support, the link is in my previous reply, and let them guide you on the reinstall. I don't know what disks they issued you or if you have a RAID setup with image. Have them guide you through a full format and reinstall to wipe everything clean. Remember you will need to reinsta
  5. You can try to post a new HJT log. I don't know if it's possible to repair your registry due to the corruption. I think your best bet is to reinstall WinXP and start fresh.
  6. You are still infected. Advapi is the Netdevil worm that edits your registry. To reinstall WinXP on your computer is not something a novice should attempt. Your computer has a SATA drive that would need it's drivers reinstalled before XP can installed to the hard drive. This wouldn't be too bad if Dell installed a floppy drive on the computer. Sadly in most cases the buyer doesn't opt for this. I would contact Dell Support and have them guide you through doing a complete reinstall of XP. Once that is done download all Windows updates, install an antivirus program and come back here for tips on
  7. I just spotted your HJT threads. With all of the malware you had your operating system may be corrupted. Is your computer a custom built or proprietary (Dell, HP/Compaq or etc.)? Depending on which type of computer it is you may need to do a repair install or reinstall of the OS.
  8. Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is not dependant on any other service. Most services are dependant upon it. Messenger has nothing to do with any issues except that it is a security problem. Have you turned off any services at any time thinking that it will save you resources? Have you scanned for malware?
  9. HID is for USB devices. BITS and HID depends on Remote Procedure Call (RPC) to be set to Automatic and Started.
  10. Event ID 7024 "BITS terminated with service-specific error 2147942405 (0x80070005)" When Trying to Start BITS
  11. More information needed. Is your computer proprietary (Dell, HP/Compaq or etc.)? Is XP the original OS installed or was it upgraded to XP? What are your system hardware specs? What non-Windows programs are you running? Application Compatibility in Windows XP
  12. If you need access to your private folders/files. How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP
  13. I have to agree. I don't even use my old Yahoo page anymore. The Google Home page is much cleaner.
  14. It doesn't matter if the present motherboard is fried. You do the repair after installling the new motherboard in the case. Read the whole article. Once you have done the repair install with the new motherboard in place you would then be booting into a vanilla install of XP with all your data intact. You would then need to install the new motherboard drivers, graphic drivers and etc. Plus you woulld need to reinstall your anti-virus and XP updates.
  15. Changing a Motherboard or Moving a Hard Drive with XP Installed
  16. I actually like storing my images at Photobucket. I have three accounts. For quick one time use of images I use http://xs.to/.
  17. You should be able to see where the problem is occurring by reading the dump log. How to read the small memory dump files that Windows creates for debugging
  18. Try it. I would create the slipstreamed CD after. This will save you time in the future. I'm waiting for SP3 to be released so I can create a new slipstreamed XP CD. Installs go so much faster. I have manually slipstreamed SP1 then SP2 when that was released to my XP CD. I am thinking of trying AutoStreamer 1.0.33 the next time.
  19. With the storms we're having maybe the ISP was temporarily whacked. I had to reset my modem (Alltel ISP) after a couple of those larger storms raced through here yesterday. I finally had to disconnect everything last night after some really vicious strikes occurred close to the house. My Time Warner cable TV service is still screwy. Of course Time Warner is always screwy but not usually this bad.
  20. With Firefox, Opera or other similar browsers you need to clear your browser cache to see your new avater right away. What happens is your old avatar is stored in the cache and until the browser is refreshed mutiple times it still appears. This happens with PMs at that other board.
  21. Did you have Norton or McAfee installed on your PC? Does your WinXP Home CD have SP1 or SP2 on it? If not create a slipstreamed XP CD with SP2 and do a format and fresh install. Backup what you can first. Something is corrupted.
