  1. JSKY had a thread here dealing with services. There was a lot of debate involving a few of us with what should and shouldn't be touched. Cataclysmcow gave a good account about disabling services doesn't aid that much in performance. One discussion JSKY's website / Services If I misspelled anything my fingers are too sore to be touching the keyboard and I'm too tired to care or use spellcheck.
  2. I have my memory settings set to Automatic. I have set them to what the memory is supposed to be but didn't notice a difference. I think playing with the memory settings usually aids overclocking. If it's running good I see no reason to change mine.
  3. I'm glad I made the switch to XP. It handles memory much better than my 98SE install. I can recover from a BSOD much faster once I figured out what made it Blue Screen. I have disabled only Services known to be a security issue or unnneeded by my setup. I do not allow Automatic Update to run. I prefer to manually update my PC just as I did with 98SE. So far none of the XP updates have caused issues with my setup. I don't have the Security Center running. Panda's anti-virus and firewall are keeping the system clean and warn me just a well or better than the Security Center. I don't use any of
  4. Their on hold for the cooler weather to arrive. In fact I'm going to wait for it to get cold before I start removing the rest of the plaster, lath and rock wool. It just doesn't get it trying to remove that crap in warm and muggy weather. I have a high school buddy that is a master carpenter who is self-employed doing finish work for several of the major contractors in the region. He is always more than willing to help. I haven't decided if I want to build my own cabinets or pick out some custom built units from one of my sources. I think it will depend on how much cash I can put away from the
  5. Cold ones all around. I just picked up a few jobs building stone retaining walls and patios plus sidewalks. Man are my muscles sore from just a few hours doing some site preparation today. My former partner showed up and said he couldn't handle all the jobs alone so I figured why not. Now we just need to put together a crew. It's difficult finding young kids with brains and brawn that are willing to do hard physical labor.
  6. See if something here helps. How can i shutdown a remote computer on my workgroup ?
  7. Check the motherboard to see if the screws are loose. Maybe the motherboard shifts and shorts out during the moving. You could also remove everything (vanilla) fron the motherboard except the porcessor then boot it. Listen for a beep or if it has the digital setup see if it goes to FF. Some boards amy require the meory installed. You should get a beep or be able to check the diagnostic LED numbers to see if there are errors.
  8. ???????????????????????????????????? That's his alternate account, (Chappy1). He was last on May 26th. using his main account, Chappy.
  9. Those appear to be the correct drivers. Do the IDE controllers show as OK in Device Manager? Was the Bios ever flashed on this board? Have you changed the Cmos battery? Are the IDE cables any good?
  10. Were the manufacturer's motherboard drivers installed?
  11. If the card reader is working fine leave them alone in Device Manager. If you start experiencing problems remove them in Device Manager then reboot for XP to recognize them again. Let me know once your scans and HJT have been completed and the experts have determined you are clean. I can then supply you the list of your startup entries. I have gone through your list and saved the changes to a Word document.
  12. Cool! I'm glad I saved that in my XP folder.
  13. Check out some of these. http://www.petri.co.il/ http://mcseguide.com/ http://www.windowsnetworking.com/ http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcse...003/default.asp http://www.cramsession.com/certifications/...t/mcse-2003.asp
  14. I know il_wiccan has not been around for a long time. I hope nothing has happen to him. Has anyone heard from or about him? Marsh and I are concerned that il_wiccan may have passed away. He didn't sound well the last time I talked to him on the phone a few months before he disappeared from the boards.
  15. I want to to follow the directions below and post a HijackThis log here: http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php?showforum=6. Run the following online scanners. 16. That sucks! We lose il_wiccan and now Drew. WTH.
  17. Thanks! and to all commented. I would have never found that info. I wish google did boolean/stupid/duh: it all goes back to trash in trash out. If you do not know how to word your search you will never find it. I bookmarked that page I will try it this week. Preston I happened across that tidbit a long time ago when I was searching for ways to *cough* defeat XP activation.
  18. Before I have you disable any startup programs I have noticed a couple that may be malware. To be sure I want to to follow the directions below and post a HijackThis log here: http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php?showforum=6. Run the following online scanners. 19. First let's get rid of the Stop error. It is because of your Mitsumi media reader. You will need to remove the software for it from Add/Remove Programs. Once this has been fixed you can use Startup Control Panel to disable programs that I will list later. XPSP2 STOP DEVICE
  20. The proprietary computers use an OEM key which will not work with the upgrade disk. There is a trick in changing a file so that you can burn a slipstreamed disk and have it identify itself as OEM or Retail. I will have to search for the information. I have yet to try it. It is supposed to make it easier when creating disks for different versions of XP for restore/recovery purposes when you only have one version. The only difference between a WinXP Home Upgrade, OEM and Retail is an identifying code that is contained within the file. The same goes for Pro. Found it. Unlocking WinXP's setupp.ini
  21. I never mix brands or speeds. I have always used Kingston memory. Knock on wood I have never gotten a bad stick from them. I would rely on the top brands only. Corsair, Crucial, Buffalo and etc. To save a couple of dollars on el-cheapo memory isn't worth the headache. I steer clear of PNY, Ultra and other bargain brands. Usually the manufacturer will provide a list of known memory modules that work at their websites. With even the best brands you will still once in a great while get a bad stick.
  22. After several attempts, Kaspersky completed a full scan. It did find a trojan downloader: Win32.Adload.bo. Housecall is being very difficult. I'll try again but I'm not sure it's going to cooperate. The last attempt said it would take 5 hours; that seems a little long to me! That's not long if you have a large hard drive with lots of files. Let it run.
