  1. Is google desktop search installed on this computer? The new "Windows Search" which installs through windows update does the same things and can be incompatible on machines where certain other desktop search applications are installed. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/...ch/default.mspx It is effectively a desktop interface for WindowsLive onesearch. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/...h/getitnow.mspx Personally I disabled it.
  2. Oughta be headed back down soon. Looks like most of the refineries will be back on line by the end of the week with only 2-3% of production taking up to 3 weeks to be restored. I hope the speculators who bid up the price loose their shirts.
  3. Did you delete it online from their hotmail /livemail database? I presume you are using the windows mail client. My first guess would be that it is using the windows search / live search and going through saved messages to check for probable addresses.
  4. I was watching the Post Hurricane Ike flyovers to assess damage to Galveston and the Texas coast and they showed two refineries doing flare offs which means they are firing them back up and getting production under way . Since those were in the hardest hit area, probably the others are getting busy getting back online. The biggest obstacles are probably electrical power (need it to run things) and personnel who left in advance of the storm and are not being allowed back in yet. They ought to suspend futures trading at times like this to keep the speculators from driving up the price.

    Hi

Well It has been a week. Hopefully you are at least still lurking around and learning some good things here.
  6. Remember a pressure drop means that contaminated water could have been siphoned back into the system so you should boil or otherwise disinfect the water before drinking it or stick to bottled water. Yeah, when power fails pumping stations have a habit of going offline.
  7. What did you do with UBCD? After you clear the CMOS, you must enter setup (press F2) where at a minimum you need to choose to load optimal defaults, change the hard drive to auto defined and click auto detect drives and then choose save settings and exit. Normally with a Dell you press Ctrl+F11 to boot to the hidden restore and recovery partition to return the hard drive to factory settings. But if you wiped the drive with UBCD than you will need to buy a copy of windows and install it.
  8. I usually stick to the discount theater. They offer $1.75 on weekends and after 6pm most shows with weekdays before 6 for $1 and all day (including after 6 ) on Tuesday for fifty cents. Sure, the movies are nearing the end of their run and will be out on DVD in a month; but it is still a full size theater. Personally I can go all day without eating or drinking (except when it is so hot you have to drink to avoid overheating) so I have no problem not ordering popcorn etc while there for a couple hours to view the show. Special show, I have two neighborhood theaters which have restaurant bar
  9. My Mother in Law keeps calling to see if I have cleaned the bathtub and filled it with water yet. I still can't convince her that Ike is a Fake. Sure some wind damage in Houston (blown down trees and broken windows in sky scrapers) and some storm surge damage (Galveston) but looks like only one death so far despite El Presidente Arbustos stern warning that those who had failed to evacuate had made a fatal mistake (some poor woman died when a tree fell on her house). They are showing people already driving around Galveston, and although there is some crap in the streets and water damage to l

What , they finally have something with Silverlight content? I had practically forgotten I installed that on my computer since it is never used.
  11. Check the drive settings in device manager. Change to optimize for fast removal not for best performance.
  12. Try expanding it somewhere else to see if it is the source or destination that is the problem. If it works elsewhere, try copying it to where you need.
  13. Reminds me of the guy who contacted the FBI to see if they had a file on him. They responded "As of the date prior to your communication we did not have any record of your existence. In the future if you wish to correspond with us regarding this or other matters please reference file number......................"
  14. you think that's bad, on two machines when I tried to update to 3.0.1 it tried to install Zango Search Bar (which is adware) (like it used to try to install google search). I found out this is rare but has happened to others . I got an alert from Avast and Threatfire and then noticed the check box to install Zango Search was checked by default just in time to uncheck it. On another machine, a clean install of 3.0.1 no searchbar at all . Very odd things are happening at Mozilla in my opinion, or their mirror servers are getting hacked. Not a reason to reject Firefox, but another reason to st
  15. Well , one of the Red Cross Disaster Relief Relocation and Registration centers is a mile or so from my house. They had it set up and ready (even had cops on duty) on Saturday. Looks like the storm was larger but weaker than alarmists proclaimed it to be and it hit further west than expected so N.O. probably will survive to flood another day. Personally I am looking forward to the three days of Rain they are predicting for Dallas (tuesday, wednesday, thursday) . We could use it, not only will it green things back up and fill the reservoirs but it could signal an end to the above average temp
  16. Is your router still set to the default admin / password for access?
  17. Might try Little Fellas app maxall.zip here http://www.v7n.com/forums/computers-intern...ns-folders.html Hmm this looks more like it http://sizecomplete.com/ But it ain't free Features • Open all windows full-size automatically from the startup. This function effectively eliminates the need for you to resize windows. Also, automatically opens the Internet Explorer windows maximized. • Maximize or Minimize ALL in one click. Programm simply adds to well-known icons to the system tray and requires absolutely no special knowledge to operate. These magic icons in tray let you minimize or maxim
  18. Press the power on button As soon as you hear the POST BEEP start tapping the F8 key once a second to get an ehanced startup options menu. At the bottom you will see "disable restart on system failure" Select that first Now if it does not boot on to windows and provide a BSOD, select to boot to safe mode with networking and see if it boots.
  19. What antivirus do you have and do you have its automatic updater turned on? This sounds like what happens with Mcafee Internet Security or Antivirus (although it could happen with any application with an automatic updater) when the updater checks for an update and is told to standby . It has set things in motion to receive the update and install it but for some reason (blocked by firewall, their server is busy or down, just dropped the connection...) it never gets it and is left standing by. Try disabling the updater and manually killing your antivirus and see if you can shut down.
  20. http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/w32delfdra.html http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/F....exe-16251.html The Delf worm / trojan is a nasty one and you need an expert to guide you through disinfection. And I would not recommend AVG to anyone; it has a history of not blocking infections, not cleaning infections, and accidentally deleting important things like the windows system folder. Nope, not my first choice by a long shot.
  21. Yeah the insurance companies have a fancy name for "hidden damage" like that. We will see a lot more of this as gas prices cause manufacturers to use plastics more and more to lighten vehicles and increase mileage. I wish they would just build some more nuclear plants, and then convert things to hydrogen .
  22. After deleting things have you bothered to empty your recycle bin? How about disk cleanup have you run it to clean other temp files which you can delete? (start / run and type cleanmgr and hit enter or it is under tools when you right click a drive and choose properties) Some things like temp internet files are set to a specific size (IN IE go to tools / internet options / general / browsing history / settings Firefox go to tools / options / advanced / network / offline storage You can safely reduce that to much lower than normally used unless you have tons of tabs open 32-64MB is adequate (
  23. I realized that my daily paper has for some time been running the list of lowest prices every day. I had pretty much been ignoring it; but it is nice to see it in the paper even if it is just the prices from gasbuddy. http://www.dallasnews.com/gasprices/ Looks like many $3.31 -$3.35 . Seems to change daily but be pretty reliable at least as far as the lowest prices are concerned. Only problem is that they do not make it clear which ones are cash only (no credit or debit cards) and that is increasingly common amongst the low price independents.
  24. Yes, you contact Dell , tell them what you did, wait for the laughter to stop and ask if they will sell you a recovery CD for your computer. Or go buy a copy of windows (Better hurry XP sales to end soon) and you install it and then download the drivers you need from Dell.
