I have to say with that setup your XP experience would be less than satisfactory. Things would be incredibly slow and frustrating. Computers have come a long way since then and even a really low end system or refurbished last years model would be a smoker besides what you have. I mean you can buy a nice brand new laptop for $349 http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_...duct_id=0293528 Not sure where you live but this gives you an idea of what you can get in the refurbished market for next to nothing http://www.microcenter.com/storefronts/cle...ied/index.phtml http://www.microcenter.com/si

Microsoft has always wanted the pay as you go model where you pay by the machine by the year for the OS and when they retire an os you have to stop using it. They wanted this back in the days when they Licensed MSDOS to IBM and that is one reason that IBM came out with IBMDOS and dropped Microsoft MS DOS . Only when Bill Gates Microsoft came out with the "New Technology" operating system and began selling it to businesses for installing on PCs, did they come back and beg him to let them install it on home computers. He instead came out with Windows 3.11 and Windows95 . Having learned the

No Bush went to war in Iraq so that he would be remembered as the great liberator who freed x million people from a ruthless dictator and brought them democracy; that and he thinks God told him to do it (and God told him he wanted him to be President) .He said so himself. I think he was hoping that the Iraqis would name a street after him and put up a statue just like the people of Kosovo declared Bill Clinton "The Great liberator who saved our people from extermination" and put up a Thirty foot bronze statue of him at one end of Bill Clinton boulevard and a Fifty foot mural of him at the oth

Take it back before the return policy expires. Tell them what it is doing and have them replace it or show you how to work it.

Sounds like there was a "save changes" option like after setting it you had to go back and click on the system settings button or something just like when changing recording speed. Until you to the change is a "temporary change" a "this time only" This allows you to change the timestamp on a recording when you manually record it (as opposed to using the clock to start and stop the recording). Why you would want to do this , I do not know but my DVD recorder lets me do it.

Alternative To Windows Moviemaker
Pete_C replied to ghorjus's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
My rule of thumb is to have at least four times the space of the file you will be working on as free space. This way there is space for a working copy, a copy in an intermediate format , and a copy in the final format and still have spare for overhead. -
System Configuration Utility Problems

I always keep old PS2 keyboards around for just that purpose; in fact I still use them on all my machines. But it is a good idea in troubleshooting to have one in case you need it to boot to bios .

If this is a very old game it could be an example of the processor actually being too fast for the game. It gets ahead of itself so to speak. Back in the day , there was a button on the front of the computer called "turbo" , it actually did the exact opposite of turbocharging, it slowed the new fast processors down enough to run older DOS games on those fancy new Windows machines.

I remember Joker; wasn't Joker a she? No I do not think she came here; I think she was helping set up that other forum when everyone migrated from TechTV to G4TV. Might have to dig out the saved last days at the CFH board to get her username . How about this list bringing back memories TechTV IRC Channel Open chappyrfd 1 04/26/2004, 8:29 p.m. HIJACKTHIS STEPS BEFORE YOU POST petecovell 1 04/23/2004, 9:10 a.m. Get Your Answers Here! Alternative To Windows Moviemaker
Pete_C replied to ghorjus's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Basically when you work on a file there will be two copies no matter what you use, the orignal and a shadow or temporary working copy which you are changing. Only when you save the finished version is the original replaced and not always if you are not careful. So to do movie editing you need a lot of free space. Generally we recommend four times the size of the file you will be working on for free space. http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/gmm/fwvideoedit.html has some freeware options I think virtual dub is the most popular http://www.snapfiles.com/get/virtualdub.html And it is fairly small -
Yep, even if you do not think you have those installed you probably do and even if you do not use them it is easy for some malicious website to put in a call for flash player 6 or jave 1.5 and if you still have it installed it loads but if there is no content to display you see nothing but they can exploit it and install what they will. This was not so common a year ago even; but recently with microsoft pushing automatic updates and more and more people heeding the advice to use an antivirus and get behind a router or firewall the malware guys have been seeking alternate paths. I think the

I think you are thinking of my old friend (and a member of the old TechTV boards) Skeet http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php?showuser=702 Haven't heard from him in some time. http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php...amp;#entry34493 He posted at windowsBBS too http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-xp/50822...ies-dialog.html But dropped out of sight there too.

From what I have seen most of these are now using "zero day" exploits in outdated software such as java, flash player, winzip, acrobat reader etc. They take advantage of these to silently install the nasty without the antivirus software being any the wiser. So go to secunia and run the software inspector to find out what software you have which has security holes currently being exploited by malware. http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/ Then follow their advice; uninstall any of the older unpatched versions, install the new upgraded version and then scan again to make sure you r

Well if you are not overclocking it ; then I would suspect that a voltage regulator on the motherboard is bad or the power supply is bad and voltage is too high , or the clock crystal on the motherboard has a crack and is running faster than it is supposed to. Have you checked to see what clock speed the CPU appears to be running at? RAM? http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php http://www.cpuid.com/ Or try SIW http://www.gtopala.com/

Go to control panel => system => system restore Click stop using system restore on all drives. Restart computer and then go back and enable it. Now go to start / programs / accessories / system tools / system restore and try to create a restore point. With your slipstream cd ready go to start / run and type sfc /scanonce (note space after sfc and before /) hit enter Now restart computer and it will scan for missing or altered windows files and replace them with backup copies. If necessary it will ask for the install cd and you can put in your slipstreamed one and it will find the file

The vegetable oil approach has several problems. First there is not enough to go around, even if we used all the vegetable oil we grow, and even then it would be more expensive than Diesel. With the increased "Biodeisel" demand I rarely see vegetable oil in the stores for under $1.99 a quart these days, $8 per gallon is a bit steep. The demand for used vegetable oil to make bio diesel got so high that many places had to put locks on their grease traps since the stuff that commercial recyclers were willing to pay them for was being stolen by those seeking free fuel. Second is, as mentioned it

I think that the greatest problem with steam engines is first the huge weight penalty of having a high pressure boiler and an engine driven by the steam; and secondly there is a lack of efficiency. That is why power plants use steam turbines not steam reciprocating engines. Now that we have high temperature alloys it is more common for power plants to have gas turbines than steam turbines; reducing one step and increasing efficiency, although nuclear plants still use steam turbines. Regarding alternate fuels; well remember that President Elect Obama has not yet been Inaugurated and the new Con

Problems With Outpost 1.0 Firewall
Pete_C replied to Gerry's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Well you could try disabling the firewall to do the update. Or you could try removing those entries and putting the firewall back in learning mode and trying to run the update and select always allow when prompted. Or go into the list and see what is being blocked and choose allow on those which are related to SAS. -
I would say you should post a hijackthis log on the malware board and have an analyst tell you if you are infected or not. Once they clear you; then the next thing is to boot to safe mode with networking (if you have dsl or cable or use a router) . See if there are problems there. If it does not freeze in safe mode; you know it is a driver or application running in normal mode and can begin trouble shooting from that end. If it does freeze in safe mode; then go with it probably being hardware ; so unplug and open the case, blow out the dust, remove cards (one at a time ) blowing out the dust

Ah, I only have voice mail on my cell and that is because it is free and I can't get it disabled. I used to have an answering machine and the message was something to the extent of "You have reached (my number). If you have done this accidentally your apology is accepted so it is unnecessary. If you have done it intentionally your mission is to leave your name number and a short message. If you fail to complete this mission this machine will deny any knowledge of your existence or that you have been attempting to reach me." Then they came out with caller ID; much more useful. I can just come
