  1. I should have known better than to give a journalist the benefit of the doubt. Agreed, these days journalists are all about breaking a sensational story and getting headlines; the truth is secondary. If they can misinterpret a statement or event they will if it gets readers or viewers.
  2. Well in the end I decided to forego the sweetbreads, even though I could have fed them to the dogs had they been a failure. On Monday I found that one of the local stores had overstocked on Wild caught Alaska Sockeye Salmon Fillets and Sea Scallops. They had them (still frozen even) and were selling the Salmon for $1.49lb and the Scallops for $2.99; prices you rarely see these days. So I bought three two pound salmon fillets and two pounds of scallops. The first salmon I already cooked. After carefully pulling all the pin bones with my trusty needle nose pliers; I put them in a skillet with
  3. Yeah, when I lived up in New England as a kid we did not have Air Conditioners; we used to stay out as late as possible and then go for drives on back roads with the windows rolled down to cool off , just searching for the cool breeze through the piney woods or up a stream bed. Here in Texas, AC is a must have; even the dogs hate to have to go out during the heat of the day.
  4. I agree, and know some individuals who have PI licenses. From what they said, it is not all that hard to get them; you just need a clean record (well not spotless but clean-> not have been convicted of two or more felony offenses, a single felony within the past twenty years; or a Class A misdemeanor within the past ten years;=> Oh yes and you can't be a registered sex offender) , know someone who has one, have three years of related investigative experience , and have a job which requires it , and of course the licensing fee. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/psb/forms/for...tionsforC-L.p
  5. http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--...ee-Edition.html System requirements: Pentium MMX 200 Mhz or higher processor Minimum 64MB of RAM Memory (128MB recommended) Minimum 40MB available hard disk space Operating platform: Windows 98/NT-SP6/Me/2000/XP IE 4.0(+) Well you seem to meet the minimum requirements so it is most probable that there is a conflict with something on your computer either another antivirus or anti spyware application or a virus itself. By the way, if you could boot to safe mode, why did you not just uninstall bit defender instead of using system restore? Or just disa
  6. 100 Degrees today, and the prediction is that it will gradually rise over the next week to ten days with no rain or cooling in site just now. At least it is dry now; so dry in fact that I can get my sunglasses icy cold by blowing the air conditioner on my truck straight on my face (and it blows snowballs even in this heat) and they do not fog over when I get out of the truck and into the blast furnace. Have to remember to keep drinking water during the day, and I still wind up dehydrated by the time I get home.
  7. They actually had an article (editorial) on this in todays Dallas Morning News . http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...n1.4d6c5f6.html It appears the law passed some time back and that the author is not really computer saavy if you get the drift. He thought he was doing what people in the industry wanted and did not realize that it could be interpreted that all computer repair technicians would be required to get Private Investigators Licenses. However the Department of Public Safety and the arm which grants said licenses believes that it does. Therefore there is action underway to cha
  8. Probably, it sure sounds like it. I think that the first thing to check into is the power supply. Use something like everest home edition (the free one ) or SIW to check the voltages. If they are off by over 5% you probably have a power supply issue. It could be that it is just not strong enough (IE you added components which need more power without buying a new more powerful power supply). It could be that the solenoid is sticking (they call it a switching power supply for a reason, It is actually always on supplying power to certain traces on the motherboard which allow the motherboard
  9. Have you already saved a bunch of files to this flash drive and you get this message when you try to save another? This is indicative of not having the files on the drive orgainized. IE you just saved a whole bunch of JPG files with no file organization. The drive still has free space, but due to the number of files present the root of the table of contents has no more open entries. Hence nothing can be written to the drive and windows thinks the drive is write protected. The solution here is to move everything from the drive to a folder on your computer, then orgainize it into a folder tree
  10. Good troubleshooting guide for this error http://www.nba.com/broadband/video_faq.html#7 OOps, dog wants me to let her out Back now. Neat the way they come and get me , nudge nudge to the elbow and do the potty dance when they want out. Totally different from the biscuit dance, the you let the waterbowl run dry dance, ......... Another guide http://www.srhdev.co.uk/dynamicstreams/hel...p?station=fm104 Looks like you may need to increase the time out settings in media player. Yet another http://www.lib.utexas.edu/help/helix/FAQs/Answer1.html Although some of the suggestions apply to real playe
  11. I think that Antivir still has a win98 version http://en.utilidades-utiles.com/download-a...-windows-98.php http://www.fortedownloads.com/Avira-GmbH-A...ol-for-Windows/ http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php http://www.free-av.com/
  12. It took a while for them to get started, but I think we already have more 100 degree plus days this year than all of last and more above ninety too. So much for global cooling. And it is dry out, instead of the heat index being higher than the actual temp , it is lower. Current temp 98 degrees at 6:30PM Looks like more of the same for the next week
  13. Did you try bit defender in safe mode? Just curious of there being someithing it "cannot" remove. Your error with mbam sounds like what happens when bit defender is disabled or turned off and its "safeties" have locked certain registry areas and system folders for protection. For example , many antivirus applications it is best to disable them when you install SP3 for XP, but with Bit Defender if you disable it you never get the popups to allow the install to make changes and it fails. IE , things Bit Defender would normally prompt for you to allow , will be locked in the "disallowed" sett
  14. A week ago I caught a gas war between Quick Trip and Race Track, $3.69 for regular $3.99 for Premium. This week it was up to $3.84 and $4.16 . Still lower than average. Still P.Oed that the station which was selling ethanol free gas has switched over .
  15. Readers Digest and Better Homes and Gardens for the OL, even though I do not think she reads them. I check out the recipe section just to see if they have anything which inspires me to create something. I used to subscribe to PC mag and Computer User but long since gave up on them. I still have six months left on my Newspaper subscription, but since it keeps getting thinner and they keep raising the price I doubt I will bother to resubscribe. Not enough content and I can get any of it online or on cable more easily.
  16. They are. The old brewery across the river from me has been converted to an ethanol and biodiesel plant. Fortunately Heaven Hill in Bardstown Ky has started matching the Brazillians prices. That South American cane sugar hooch must not be distilled properly or charcoal filtered, even a couple drinks give one hell of a hangover. For a dollar more Heaven Hill has a quadruple distilled charcoal filtered line(Burnetts) , very smooth and no afteraffects if you do not overdo it. "Burnett's Vodka uses an uncompromising production process of quadruple distillation and triple charcoal filtering to re
  17. The question is what kind of loud do you mean? Most likely it is the fan, and either it is a cheap fan with a sleeve instead of a bearing and the sleeve is wearing through and the fan is wobbling like it would when laden with dust and maybe even grabbing; or if it is a bearing fan it is either defective or overheated so severely that the bearings lubricant escaped. In either case , if under warranty have it replaced, if not you can buy a new (high quality this time) fan and replace it. Be careful , the capacitors can deliver a dangerous shock even after the power supply is disconnected.
  18. First thing I would check is boot to safe mode and try to shut down from there. If it shuts down you know it is a problem with something which loads in normal windows (software or driver) which is crashing so badly when it is told to close that it crashes windows too. Normally this is a driver (generally sound card or video card) but it could also be a virtual machine like antivirus. But I agree, that if you hear a whine from the power supply it is probably a capacitor . It is possible that the power supply is at fault. Modern power supplies are switching power supplies, they are not suppose
  19. Given your description I would say that confirms that the circuit board is good and it is something more. Have you tried putting the drive on a lazy susan (you know the thing you put food on that spins around so you can access it from all sides) and quickly spin it back and forth? This often will free a read head which has jammed because it thrashed back and forth to quickly and got stuck in the old parking zone or its modern day equivalent. By drive not recognized on hardware level; are you saying it will not show in bios? Or does it show there but not in device manager? Or just not in my c
  20. An excellent starter read is "Black boxes explained, Router? Bridge? Switch? Hub? What's the difference?" http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networ...ridge_types.htm It explains what each type of device does as well as the similarities and differences. They have some good analogies too. But the key is to have the right device for the job. Switches are used to control the flow of traffic inside a network; they are not designed to connect two networks (your LAN and the internet) that is the job of a Router or Server. So, how are you sharing your internet? Using a Router or using a Server?
  21. Agreed, I find gmail to be most useful in this respect and most providers allow the TLS/SSL connection to smtp.gmail.com on port 465 and / or 587 http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer....mp;answer=13287 Others, you may find that the ISP lets you login and add an email sending address to the allowed list, they then send a confirmation email to that address with a verification code you have to click on the link and enter to confirm that you are indeed the owner of the address you are adding .
  22. Times are tough all over, have been for some time and are getting worse. I remember over a year ago they stopped electronic (direct) deposit because the banks were charging to much for it and the cost added up. Originally they offerred to mail checks , but then the Post Office raised rates and they decided that there was a savings to be made there too so that was stopped. Back to picking up check at human resources. Many years back , they decided that because so many of the people who worked different shifts or off site came in early in the morning on payday , and those on shift took longe
  23. Remember; Sygate has not been updated or maintained since it was bought by Symantec / Norton. It is basically unsupported and unpatched and has many known exploits and holes. It is far better to go with a current supported firewall including the one that comes with windows than to be hiding behind a false sense of security running an outdated unpatched application. Personally, if you have a router then I think that for most users the windows firewall offers adequate control and security. If you want a more advanced control then yes there are several free firewalls including Comodo, Zone Alar

    Bug Bites,

Haven't used my tank sprayer in the house in years (not since the boys grew up and moved out). But of course this year I still haven't sprayed the yards since the one spot seems to be keeping the dogs flea free so far and I only had to spray the trees for webworms once (I use a pressure washer with a soap tank and put some detergent and insecticide concentrate in there and just blast up an over the trees letting it fall like rain; and hit any nests I see blasting through them with high pressure soapy insecticide. Works great). How are these for some insect controllers Thats a 2x4 on top
