  1. Referencing a memory address of 0x00000000 is called a Null Pointer ( address 0x00000000 is called Null , and nothing exists at Null ) ; it is referencing something which does not exist. In computer programming a "pointer" simply holds a memory address or location where a value is stored. When programs get intense, rapidly manipulating pointers, adding and subtracting values sometimes the author makes a mistake and the program attempts to access an invalid location , maybe negative, maybe zero; whatever. So some program on your computer has a bug and this is causing it to attempt to access eit
  2. Agreed. These tips are getting a bit old. Yep. While I am a big fan of multifunction network aware machines like the HP Photosmart and officejet series there are many factors to consider . The cost of ink cartridges is just one factor; their life expectancy is another. Some tanks hold more ink and than others, so when you calculate cost based on the ink volume the larger tanks may be cheaper. But some of these dry out if not used while others can be left for months between print jobs and have no problems. Careful research helps. While multifunction devices combine the functions of sever
  3. Sorry It took so long to answer. I would have gone with something cool, acidic, citrusy... Like the Mexican Pasta Salad we had on Cinquo de Mayo bbq. This was our original recipe "Mexican Pasta Salad" (the only thing really requiring a plate and utensils ) Spiral pasta with black beans, diced onions, cilantro, taco seasoning, diced tomatoes , sour cream (ranch) dressing and lime juice and grated cheddar cheese ( I wanted to add corn too but the OL said no). Here is an improved upon version. Or you can google it Mexican Pasta Salad with Black beans and corn. Nice thing is you can vary it based
  4. Hot, it was 97 an hour ago and is supposed to hit 100 by 4PM. Looks like it will be a hot dry summer in Texas this year. http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/expert_as...al_drought.html Looks like they were pretty close on the prediction that North Dakota and Iowa would see an improvement on drought conditions. But it looks like they predict "normal" temps for Texas this summer http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/predictio...onal.php?lead=2

    Bug Bites,

I just went and tossed some old mango's in the kitchen garbage. I thought better of it and went to grab them out to toss on the compost pile out back when I saw a Brown Recluse Spider in the garbage can . No doubt in my mind what it was; I have seen and been bitten by them before. http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/pi/enpp/ento/...ousspiders.html http://www.brownreclusespider.biz/ Needless to say, I pulled the bag out of the can, tied it closed and put it out in the collection bin. Hopefully it just came in on some piece of trash one of us picked up out front and tossed without thinking. I hate t
  6. Spend ten thousand dollars to save a few hundred? Spend even more for a rack to carry my bike instead of just throwing it in the back? Risk getting stuck in blizzards and floods? Buy Japanese, like the lawnmower I absolutely loathe? I'm disappointed with my mileage, not crazy. Yeah, here in Texas where it is near a hundred from Mid may through October ; you get these fools who buy hybrids only to find that the Air Conditioner cuts out when the engine does and that to have air conditioning they have to put it in the towing mode or whatever which keeps the engine running and hence other than r
  7. Remember there is a little observed holiday just for grandparents GrandParents Day Dates This year it is Sept7, which gives you a long time to plan something. Hard to really give specific suggestions for you; but you may want to consider preserving their insight and experience. Something like a digital voice recorder / camcorder . Remember time is the most valuable commodity; don't waste it; and the communication is what makes us human. Offer to spend time doing something they want or need to do and it will probably mean more to both of you than some trinket. Yes , your uncles passing has
  8. Anyone got any suggestions for Beef Sweetbreads (Ris de Veau => Thymus ) ? Other than the standard of thin sliced dusted in flour and fried in butter like scallopini? The little grocery down the street from my house has them on for $1.28 a pound this week. They look good quality. I probably will just google around and see if I can find any good recipes ; although the OL likes the scallopini idea. Still, I would like to know if anyone has any favorite uses for them Also suggested was grilled, but hey floured and fried in butter does sound good.
  9. On the news today they said that they had not cleared all the counties in Florida , nor a certain country starting with a M which accounts for 80% of the imported tomatoes. But it could happen anywhere; birds , snakes, lizards all carry salmonella and could easily infect a crop with their droppings. One more reason they should offer irradiated food , sealed for your protection and a long shelf life.

    Bug Bites,

Well, whatever bit me didn't mind that I take vitamins! I'd forgotten about the B1 thing. In my experience; I have nearly always taken a multi-vitamin and don't get eaten alive, so there's that, but on the other hand they DO manage to find me (likely by the CO2 I exhale), but they just buzz around me, usually over my head. One time while out fishing I had a cloud of them OVER my head, but I wasn't getting bit. Yeah; I notice that too. They buzz and annoy but do not bite.
  11. I just returned all the Safeway tomatoes I bought. Also the "on sale" watermelon that was about as ripe as a bowling ball. I'm making a point now to save receipts from all grocery stores. It's bad enough paying rediculous prices for produce, but if it's not up to my standards, back it goes for a refund. Tomatoes on the vine that are grown hydroponically seem to be exempt from the recent scare. I found some at a local Sprouts. $1.25 a pound. They look and smell good, like real tomatoes should. Of course they can't compare to your own garden grown. I'm still trying to figure out how to grow ve
  12. Tornado season in NY is almost unheard of. Of course with this "global warming" who knows? I remember a couple in Mass and NH when I was a kid up there, and that was long before Man Bear Pig and Global Warming were threatening everyone. I think it is just like I learned way back then that Humanity had developed civilization during an unprecedentedly mild and stable climate and that we could not count on it lasting indefinitely. Sooner or later we would have to expect that weather patterns would become more variable and severe. That and the effect of modern communications . Back then by the

    Bug Bites,

Re reading this thread since it was at the top reminded me of something I read last year . Ever wondered why some people get eaten alive when they go outdoors but others rarely get bothered by mosquitoes? Well, a study found that mosquitoes hate the smell and taste of thiamine (Vitamin B1). Further research showed that mosquitoes target people with low vitamin B levels, and avoid those who take a daily B vitamin supplement (25 - 50mg B1 minimum) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiamine http://www.drgreene.com/21_38.html http://www.bugpatch.net/articles.htm They even make a B1 patch now. I neve

    Bug Bites,

I second that. Look at the bite, are there two sets of punctures, fang marks so to speak? Nasty little buggers they are. I had one last year but it was not that bad. The OL got bitten once when she hung a pair of jeans outside to dry (so much for eco friendly laundry in Texas after that) and put them on fresh off the line the next morning . Got bitten six times and it was not pleasant.
  15. They had an article in the paper today that even after you do the Peso to Dollar conversion Regular Unleaded gas is over a dollar (looks more like $1.25 to me) cheaper across the border in Mexico and that lots of folks along the border in Texas , NewMexico , and Arizona are getting passports just so they can drive across the border and fill up. http://math.ucr.edu/ftm/bajaPages/Recent.Prices.html Magna (Gasoline) 6.71 pesos per liter $2.37US per gallon (approx.) 17. No, not with a missing spleen, you HAVE to be super careful. Chlorine has its critics too though (toxic byproducts when it degrades). I guess I'm less worried than many as I (like many others) HAVE had mild food poisoning and it's no biggie. I've had flu symptoms that were MUCH worse. I mean, like, Oh-God-I-think-I'm-gonna-die flu symptoms. But that's me, your mileage may vary. Not that worried about the "byproducts' of using chlorine. I rinse things off afterwards and Dallas now uses Ozone and UV light to sterilize the water. (Sure beats chlorine when lake algae is in bloom. The chl
  18. Having no spleen I am essentially immune compromised (amongst other things) and have long had a policy of safe food handling. (The second time it felt that I had eaten a bag of razorblades and salt and had diarrhea for a week was enough). This means raw meat in one drawer and encased in a ziplock to ensure it does not spread any contamination. Lunch meats and such all go into individual sealed containers. Keeps em fresh and lowers risk of contamination. Sealed packs (lunchmeats) get a rinse in a sink of cold water with chlorox in it when I bring them home. Veggies get similar treatment; they
  19. I wonder if your changing and removing drives has altered any drive letters or boot loader entries hence causing it to look for a non existent drive for say the swap file? Maybe you should do a repair install?
  20. First lets deal with svchost.exe and why you have so many. Svchost is an application which hosts NT Services , portions of applications (big installed programs) which cannot run all by themselves but often need to be launched independently of the application which installed them. If you go to start / run and type services.msc you will see some of them; others will show up as 023 entries in a hijackthis log , or in scheduled tasks folder or a number of other locations in the registry. So, as windows loads, each time there is a call to launch services which do not have their parent applicati
  21. Ahh Giada, I thought she had a really massive head until I saw how petite she really is. When they first had the barefoot contessa , I expected it to be her not Ina Garten. I like to catch Everyday Italian. Hmm I have two Sara Lee Black Forest Hams (about six pounds each) deli style and a slicer. I bet that shaved they would work out. Not to mention that my favorite package store has imported German Dunkel (Warsteiner http://www.warsteiner-usa.com/) for $10 a twelve pack (well they have the other varieties as well, but hey dunkel is what real beer is all about). We go through so much garl

  23. The sauce sounds great; but I think I would use my favoritie San Luis (Potosi) instead of Tabasco sauce http://www.hotsauceblog.com/hotsaucearchiv...lavor%E2%80%9D/ I like the blended flavor of multiple peppers and the added garlic makes it wonderful. Ingredients. Acetic acid, Cascabel peppers, Arbol peppers, spices, natural flavors, preservatives (potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate), Ancho peppers, Guar gum, Yellow 5, Red 40, garlic powder. Wish I had seen your recipe for Italian Baked beans before I used my last four cans of Cannellini beans making "white bean chile" with pork (Country ribs
  24. Well, when I first heard that they might be merging with or bought by Blockbuster I saw the logic in it. What really confused me about Circuit City here in Dallas is that they would seemingly constantly close a store just to open a new location a mile or two (rarely more than two miles away from the original location). It was not as if the new location offered tremendously better location or access ; it often seemed like some moron in another state had just looked at a big map of other shopping centers and decided to open not in but near something which had a name; without checking what the
  25. I doubt the darn wind chime sits still long enough to focus the light on much of anything; and besides which it is in the shade of three trees and generally even if it were lit the light would fall on brick or concrete, not anything flammable. As for the candle holders; all folks have to do is move them to a location where they are not going to be in direct sunlight; like on the back of the toilet or edge of the tub on a tile surface dining table in the middle of the room. Just use common sense. I find it really ridiculous how the baristorcracy (society run by lawyers and a fear of what th
