  1. You need to check that your ASPI layer is installed and functional. I use ASPI Check and ForceASPI to accomplish this. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=101614
  2. The last time I had an old S/O contact me was to ask if I would take a paternity test.
  3. Why would you need a program to tell you the connection is lost? If one light turns red on my modem then I know the connection has failed. I would say that your problem lies with the ISP if the connection drops after 8 hours of use.
  4. Jeff's home page, http://www.besttechie.net/, contains interesting information that they may miss by going straight to here.
  5. Make sure the modem isn't getting hot. It is out in the open where air can get to it, right? Have a small fan blow on it. Check your phones for static. You may have a bad line or bad filter(s). Do you have portable phones, fax machine or security system connected to the phone line(s)? Any errors in Device Manager for the Ethernet card or USB port (how does it connect to the PC)? If all else fails call your ISP.
  6. Your Bios settings may have been changed back to default due to a dead/weak Cmos battery on the motherboard. Replace the battery then reset your Bios for the AGP card to be recognized and disable onboard video. If the AGP card is then functional install the updated Nvidia drivers for it. Not knowing the Presario's model number I am not sure if the onboard video is disabled in the Bios and/or Device Manager.
  7. As I stated at G$ you need to download and install SP4 for Win2K. The first thing you should have done when downgrading to 2K is visit Windows Update.
  8. I'd haphazard a guess and say a vxd file became corrupted. I would reboot and press F8 to get into the boot menu then select Command Prompt Only. Run scandisk /autofix and see if any issues are reported. If the mouse was faulty it may have led to the corruption.
  9. Yes, set it to 256. You will probably see better performance from your GPU.
  10. This should be in the Malware Removal section of these forums. I'll see if I can move it there.
  11. I used TweakUI to disable this annoyance. To do it manually: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304148
  12. Open OE and see if there is still a message from MS about welcoming you to OE.
  13. If your friend has the same version of XP (Home or Pro) and it is OEM it will work on the HP using your activation key. If he doesn't have the OEM disk but it is Retail then you could do the alteration in creating the OEM disk from a Retail one as outlined here: Yea Or Nay. Remember you need to use the correct version (Home or Pro). While you are at it slipstream SP2. http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windo..._slipstream.asp Once you have the correct XP CD to use I would install fresh on the new drive without the other one hooked up. Once the install is finished install the mobo drivers and
  14. I have many links in my XP folder that would be construed as illegal.
  15. You have at least one trojan that I can see. Please wait for one of the experts to guide you through cleaning up the computer.
  16. Post the log in the Malware section. Malware Removal - HijackThis Logs
  17. What popups are you getting? If these popup windows are not Microsoft related then you should go to the malware section of these forums and follow the Hijack This procedures and post the log to clean the computer up before attempting to install SP2.
  18. I hope the big coffee maker is gong early in the morning. My turn for the big snow storm tonight.
  19. Halloween? Kids? They don't call me Terrorist for nothing. Parents stear their kids past my place on the opposite side of the road. Teenagers in this town know better than to disrupt me or mess with my place. If it isn't bad enough being afraid of me they sure as heck don't want to disrupt my dog. He doesn't answer the door politely. I have had to replace a few steel storm doors because he goes straight through them when upset. I was outside with him on his leash one afternoon when the UPS guy walked aroung the corner of the house with computer parts. The dog snarled and the UPS guy tossed the
  20. It was unecessary for this topic to get sidetracked about viruses seeing as the OP did not state he had a problem with any. Heydc, Ignoring the virus discussion your problem may be caused by a corrupted restore point. Read the information in the following link to troubleshoot System Restore failures. Troubleshoot System Restore “Restore Point Failures” in Windows XP I know my XP setup and have no qualms using System Restore when a glitch occurs.
  21. Having both Norton and McAfee can cause conflicts and allow viruses to attack the system. They tend to cancel each others protection. Norton if not configured correctly can cause the browser not to connect to certain sites. I'm happy to hear that the laptop is now running decent.
  22. We're getting pounded by high winds. i hope my new roof holds up and the humongous oak tree out front doesn't topple on me. The area in the northern part of my county called the Tug Hill Plateau is getting piled up with snow. They usually get hit before the rest of us. They average over 300-400" of snow per year.
  23. I believe you need to contact Sony and get a recovery CD. The recovery CD should have been created when the laptop was first purchased. I don't know if you can access a recovery partition to restore the laptop back to factory specs. Check here http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/select-sy...&NAVDISP=pc If you can restore it back to factory make sure you enable the firewall before connecting to the Internet and download all of the updates. Once the updates are completed install an updated anti-virus program and the other programs suggested at the end of your HJT post.
