  1. Wait for it to finish. There will be a couple of prompts. Format should display: WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)? Type [Y] [Press ENTER] When it reaches 100% complete, you will see a new message: FORMAT COMPLETE. SYSTEM TRANSFERRED. You will see one last message: Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for none)? Type anything you like or leave it blank - [Press ENTER] It is now time to install the OS.
  2. First it isn't FDISK to wipe the drive. FDISK is for setting up the partitions. The correct command using the bootdisk to wipe the drive is format X: where X is the letter of the drive you will be installing the OS (WinME) on. If you only have one hard drive you should type at the A:> prompt format C:. Once it is done formatting you can pull the bootdisk from the floppy drive then reboot the computer and enter the Bios, Change the boot order to CD-Rom first and HDD0 second. Place the WinME CD in the drive and the install should progress automaically. You will need to select with CD-Rom supp
  3. How being a mechanic sucks by Whiskeyman One winter a buddy's transmission failed while his car was parked on my uncle's front lawn. It was a miserable, steady lake effect blizzard type of day. Amazingly he had a spare power-glide in the back of his '65 Chevy wagon. Fortified by the fact he needed to get to work the next morning and the consumption of several cases of beer we commenced to shovel 4 feet of snow from around his car. During a couple of hours digging and jacking up the wagon we made a few trips into the house to warm ourselves and drink more beer. We then commenced to replace the
  4. Believe it or not, but I found that was the easiest way to change a couple of plugs on my mother's '86 Caprice. It was far easier than changing the plugs in a '69 Boss 429 Mustang. I had two of them that I serviced at the old speed shop. I had to pull the engines to change the plugs. After the third time the customers asked me if there was something that could be done to make it easier. I used a holesaw to drill holes in the fender wells in line with the plugs and used those plastic plugs used in floor pans to seal them. If they wanted to change the plugs they just popped those out. I'm glad
  5. What are boot sector viruses, and how can I prevent them? Disinfecting DOS boot record viruses that store the boot sector Disinfecting master boot record viruses that store the boot sector
  6. Which account? I have 8 gmail accounts used for different purposes. I think the fullest, maybe 10%, is the one used for computer tech. I receive email from Tech Republic, KB Alertz and a couple of other computer tech/networking sites.

  9. I would start fresh. There are programs that can be used to create partitions after an OS has been installed, but if you are not use to them your setup already installed could be crippled. Here is a nice FDISK guide I ran across some time back. Using FDISK Many programs installed in Win98SE won't be compatible with XP. The best bet is to download and install the correct version on XP after it is installed. As for data just back it up to install it on the storage partition later. I like using a small (2GB-20GB) hard drive to connect as slave to transfer data when a burner isn't available. As f
  10. After you install WinXP you can install .NET 1.1. Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package You can do a clean install of XP using the upgrade disk. Just boot to it like a regular disk. It will ask for the qualifying disk (Win98SE) during the install. You will insert the 98 disk and it will be verified. Just follow the directions. Windows XP Clean Install (Interactive Setup) I would use the Win98SE or WinME boot disk to fdisk (partition) and format the drive as FAT32. I would create a 5GB C: partition for Win98SE (98 needs to be installed first for dual boot), a 20GB D: part
  11. The only Fords I ever owned were '62, '64 & '66 Galaxie 500s, '65, '66 & '68 Mustangs, '66 Fairlane GT and '72 & '06 F-150s. All of them were easy to work on except the newer '06 F-150 XL which I am glad it is under warranty. I would need to erect a scaffold to work under the hood. I haven't had many problems working on my '88 GMC Sierra winter rat/work truck. Before the '88 and '06 the newest vehicle I owned was my favorite, '72 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ. That car rode fantastic, went real fast (155 m.p.h., checked by radar *cough*) and got 19 m.p.g. I would still have it if the frame
  12. I know where you're coming from. I've always done my own annual tune-ups. Like whats the deal? Cap, rotor, wires and plugs. Yeah! Now I own a GMC Safari and have yet to see or find a plug wire or the distributor. Now, I've replaced the wiper motor, what a pain! And the water pump, Jeesch! But still no sign of plugs or wires... I swear they make 'em like this to gain revenue at the dealers. And what a rip that is.... Upwards of $70 an hour when the "wrenchie" is barely making enough to support his family. And simple maintainence takes 2-3 times longer. FAQ Farm has some answers for working on

  14. Automobiles started going bad when they put computers in them. They make everything smaller and lighter to get better mileage. What a crock. My old '60s Chevy pickup with a 283 had more torque and got better mileage than my '88 GMC with a V-6. The older one was better built and a lot more solid. I could change the points in a couple of minutes and rebuilt the carb in less than a half hour. Try messing with the electronics crap in todays vehicles and it will take much longer and cost over 500% more. I have had big blocks from the '60s and '70s in heavy cars (4000 lbs.+) get around 20 m.p.g. whe
  15. There are plenty of reviews. It will initially cost more but the upgrade prices are reasonable. SpinRite can be a cheap way of recovering lost data on a crapped out drive. http://www.google.com/search?q=SpinRite+reviews http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm
  16. It's good to hear it worked. I did save all of the Win98SE updates and burn them to disk along with the unofficial update. I keep them for customers who like using 98SE on their older PCs that won't run XP and they play older games.
  17. You could have had someone send his CDs by snail mail in the time this hasn't been adequately answered. Use a WinXP Pro CD to run chkdsk through the Recovery Console. It seems that using a XP Pro CD will allow the Recovery Console to be installed on MCE. I even imagine you could have used the WinXP Pro boot disks. Tell your friend when he goes home for the holidays to retrieve his CDs and keep them with him. Entering Microsoft windows recovery console in XP media center How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP As for SpinRite I concur that it is a handy tool for someone to hav
  18. Nuts that one doesn't work. Let's try another way. Here is the UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack 2.1a (Freeware). It is supposed to be an improvement over Windows Updates. I have downloaded this, but have yet to test it on my 98SE setup.
  19. The corporate page I linked to is still active and the download links still function.
  20. You need to update Win98SE. IF Windows Update no longer works for 98 the following link has many of the necessary updates. http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp The one you need to stop the popup is found by scrolling down to:
