  2. As soon as I can get this stable I will load SP2. XP Home OEM is a legit install from Toshiba. They never had the brains to click on the flashing icon to let the updates install. I have had Outerinfo and RegCleaner popups plus the browser keeps closing. Right now I am using Portable Opera. I see PurityScan and need to look over the rest on my computer. There is a bunch of junk loaded on this from the kids. There are two other accounts. I will follow up with those HJT logs shortly. 3. On a large drive I always partition it. It goes much faster defragging sya a 40GB partition than 100GB. If the OS becomes corrupted you don't have to worry about losing your documents, pictures and etc. if they are on a separate partition.
  4. I wonder what the payment plan would run.
  5. TM 2007 contains an anti-spyware feature. It probably protects the same way as SpyBot's immunize feature.

  7. If is far better to dump or disable SpyBot than remove TM 2007 and revert to TM 2006. When is the last time SpyBot found or blocked anything bad on your PC?

  9. Are you sure you're not mistaking the divider (-) in between My Friends and 2 New Messages as a minus sign? Maybe it needs to be replaced with a *.
  10. I use this WinME bootdisk to format large drives FAT32. It makes it nice on storage drives that you wish to share with different OSes. I use this WinME bootdisk from Radifed. Just format a floppy then install this to it (self-extracting). http://radified.com/Files/bootmec.exe
  11. For you Windows 98 & ME users try the tips below to prepare your PC. Fix the Win98SE DST issue. Install the Windows 98 Resource Kit Tools from your Win 98 install CD. Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive, navigate to the \Tools\Reskit\ directory and run the "setup.exe" file from there. This will install the "Sample Tools" kit and put an entry into your Start > Programs > Windows 98 Resource Kit. You have to use the Win98 version of the Time Zone Editor. Open the Tools Management Consule and under "Configuration Tools" double click the "Time Zone Editor". Click on your Time Zone (probabl
  12. As posted at WindowsBBS. Here's a quick tool to see if your computer is ready for the early Daylight Savings Time this year. It was made by Jeff Williams at the University of Minnesota and uses JavaScript to detect patch status. A green circle means you should be good to go. Important applications that rely on time should probably still be checked manually as well. DST Patch Tester: http://dst.cdes.umn.edu

  14. All AdAware or SpyBot found on my PCs were MRUs. I got rid of SpyBot and once a month check with AdAware. Between Panda, Spyware Blaster and CCleaner nothing is ever really loaded on my PC. About once a month I run a HJT scan and compare it to the previous one.
  15. How old is the laptop? Maybe it never had CD-Rom support from the Bios. At the factory they probably preloaded the OS to the hard drive with a customized disk before installing it to the laptop.
  16. What's a refund? As a self employed contractor I get to pay in each year. Naturally I have quite a few "write offs" including my home office where I sit and visit the boards. It pretty much balances out at the end.
  17. It should work. I was involved with this same discussion last year at WindowsBBS because of the same situation. Make sure you run all of the diagnostic tools first while it is in your PC. Buying that adapter will probably be an asset down the road.
  18. Disable the screensaver then go into your power options and set the monitor to turn off after 30 minutes to 1 hour of inactivity. See what happens then. Also make sure hibernate or suspend is disabled.
  19. Did you check the Recycle Bin? Right click on it then click Open. If the file is there right click on it then click Restore. This program works quite well but needs to be run from a hard drive with a working OS. PC INSPECTORâ„¢ File Recovery 4.x
  20. Check disk 3 for scratches or smudges. It could also be a bad disk.
  21. Happy B-Day! Another year and what's his name on the Today show will be announcing your 100th.
  22. XP better than 98SE? Nah! I waited until after SP2 to install XP and the only reason then was to get used to it because the support for 98SE was ending. I must admit that XP does handle memory much better.
