  1. Your biggest resource problems are all of the security programs you have running especially Norton. No wonder your system slows down. These are required at startup and can safely be disabled. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Motive SmartBridge] C:\PROGRA~1\NETASS~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe *O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Window Washer] C:\Program Files\Webroot\Washer\wwDisp.exe /startup * Disable this within the program's options or it will reenable itself it startup. O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE O4 - Startup: Event Reminder.lnk = c:\PMG4\PMREMIND.EXE
  2. Don't use preview pane and don't open suspicious emails with attachments. The preview pane automatically opens emails in the order they are received. If an infected one is sent it will open it and could initiate the malware contained. Some anti-virus programs scan emails on arrival but some infected .zip files in email cannot be detected until unzipped.
  3. With today's CPUs and other hardware turning it on/off will not noticably decrease the lifespan of the components. You may have to replace cheap sleeved bearing fans more often and the consequences of the CPU fan failing while you are out would cause major damage. Set the Bios to turn off the computer in case of overheating. As for power usage an idle computer uses less than a couple of 100 watt light bulbs. A CRT monitor will use a lot of energy where a LCD won't. Have your monitors go into standby after a set amount of time. With the CRT this will save energy and for the LCD this will save t
  4. He has 2 computers but one disk. Both PCs have XP on them. The one that is a Dell doesn't have the Dell disk and he wants to use his WinXP Home SP2 OEM disk to do a reinstall of XP on the Dell. This is legal and will work with the key that is on the Dell. jimras OEM key > OEM disk, Retail > Retail. Home > Home, Pro > Pro. Upgrade has it's own key. 5. Check to make sure the addresses that you emailed are correct and/or current.
  6. Sort answer, NO... this is illegal and pirating. No ok to do. As Tony said, what you want to do is illegal, and pirating, and as far as I know, it is IMPOSSIBLE to use the key from a Win XP CD more than once per install - The Key is specific to the CD, and will need to be activated - When the activation fails, you would have to call MS and have it activated. Additionally, when MS does Validation to see if you are running a "legit copy of Windows" using that Validation Tool, it would find a problem, and say that your copy is not legitimate - XP Keys may be used to reinstall an OS if it fails,
  7. Date many and don't get hooked on one single chick. When you start approaching 50 then it's time to find the one or not.
  8. Actually if he keeps using his programs installed on Win98 and never rebooting his resources would stay low. He also has a crap load of *&%%#$ at startup so his initial resources may be low to begin with. Win98 needs to be rebooted especially after using some memory intensive programs that were poorly written. Language removed. PMs appreciated!
  9. Happy B-Day Pat. You're closing in on that big five oh!
  10. How long had the computer ran before being rebooted? Win98SE needs to be rebooted now and then or it will run low on resources. How much memory does the PC have? When is the last time you booted into Safe Mode and ran Disk Cleanup, ScanDisk and Defragged? Do you keep your cache cleaned? Win9X/ME don't like to be continually on like NT based Windows or 'nix.
  11. I meant that with sincerity, googling is a skill in its self. That it is.
  12. For $40/month you should get at least 768/256. Any speed package less than that isn't worth it. I pay $35/month for 3000/384. The 1500/256 package here costs $25/month. These are with 1 year agreements. They also supply my Speedstream 5200 modem for free. Alltel has been very good to me even if they do have a couple of dummies working tech support.
  13. I retired my old '88 Chevy Caprice last year. It had well over 300,000 on it and never required any major engine or transmission work. Good old 305 with a 700-R4 tranny. Damn thing got just over 20mpg mostly city driving. I would have kept it but the body fell apart. Damn winters here are tough with all the salt on the roads. That's the second Chevy Caprice that I retired with over 300,000 on it. The other was a '66 with 283 and 2-spd. power glide. That also got over 20mpg. You just can't beat a well maintained V-8 Chevy.
  14. I don't drive a Dodge or own one. I do work on them now and then. If your manual trans is slipping out of overdrive then either the clutch is starting to fail, the hydraulic clutch system is low on fluid, needs bleeding, fluid needs to be replaced, fluid was sluggish due to low temperatures (should improve when it warms up) or the clutch master cylinder is failing.

  17. Looks like we're going to have on and off small lake effect bands for the week with temps approaching the high 30's during the week then another cold front coming in this weekend.
  18. On many automatics with overdrive they should downshift when hit with a high headwind or going up a steep grade. There is a electronic module within the transmission that will start to fail and cause constant downshifting or slipping. You will need to have it hooked up to a diagnostic machine. Dodge is well known for the failure of this module.
