  1. What happened around here? Did someone fire the help?
  2. It won't take long to get the mobility back in the wrist. Just think of the pain as a good thing. I used to hate it when recovering from my injuries and surgeries, but all I could think of was getting back to doing what I want, unrestricted.
  3. At support they stated the drives do work. It seems they should be backward compatible to USB 1.1. If it doesn't work return it and find a brand that will work with all OSes and USB.
  4. Do you get any error messages? Have you looked in Device Manager to see if their are problems with the CD drive?
  5. I just went to Kingston's site and all of their flash drives are supported in Win98SE/ME/2K/XP. They are not supported in Win95/98FE/NT (non USB supported OSes).
  6. Read your manual. There may be an option to create a recovery disk. I believe this is a one shot deal on some OEM computers.
  7. Your best bet is to buy an adapter so you can hook up the laptop hard drive to the Desktop computer. You could then format and install Win98SE. Only load the Windows generic drivers. Place the hard drive back in then install the modem/Ethernet drivers so you can connect to the Internet and install the laptop's motherboard, video and other necessary drivers. Of course by the time you did this you could probably find a CD drive for the laptop. What make and model is it?
  8. KAV gave a clean bill of health. Another Avast scan found nothing. The computer is behaving nicely. No more flashing of the open windows and the buttons. I have Windows fully updated and now it's time to install and update Office. I installed SpywareBlaster, AdWare, SpyBot, Avast and IE-Spyad. This should keep her fairly safe. At least as safe as Win98 FE and dial-up can get without slowing it down. She doesn't surf the net much but constantly uses Office to do her school work. At least now she shouldn't be transferring infected files to the school's computers. Thanks.
  9. Where is everyone? All of you outside cleaning your yards? This place has been quiet since St. Patricks. You can't still be hungover.
  10. I think you are going to need to run HJT and psot a log to get rid ofthe Winfixer problem. It very well could be why AdAware is rebooting.
  11. I'll try that a little later. I am just finishing up the Windows updates. There wasn't one update installed on this POS. I would have put a Ehernet card in it and dug out my router, but it would have taken me longer to set it up than downloading the updates by dial-up. I hate Compaq/HP mini cases. Killbox found nothing. I'm still having problems getting any online scans to run. Somehting isn't working with the ActiveX or Java. I'm getting Kaspersky's online scan to load. I think the problem with Panda and HouseCall is due to their crappy designed webpages wanting to load tons of graphics. For
  12. I'll check for logs after Registry Healer finishes. Between that, CCleaner and RegClean there was over 3000 items to be addressed. I am still finding garbage throughout the folders/files. SpyBot found nothing. I also ran C.W.Shredder and it found nothing. I still can't get Panda or HouseCall scans to run. I found updates for 98 FE/Gold and will apply them once I get the registry straightened out. My eyes are bugging out using a 14" monitor that will onlly only operate at 60Hz. This PC isn't very fast. 350MHz Celeron with 128MB RAM. Tweak time. Avast log. 3/27/06 7:31:07 AM Default 4294469309 S
  13. I can't get Panda Active Scan to run. I tried HouseCall but it needs Java and Java 1.05_6 doesn't like Win98 Gold. I downloaded and burned Avast to a CD and loaded it. I was able to connect through dial-up and update it. It has found 3 trojans so far and is still running. I also tried to hook up one of my 98SE drives but Compaq must need certain files on the HDD. It would not recognize the new hard drive with 98SE. I think there is a file I need to download and install to the hard drive. 98 Gold isn't going to cut it. I'm still finding downloaded garbage spread throughout C:. I got rid of AOL
  14. I have manually removed BDE, Ares, Kaaza and some other old P2P programs plus a few items identified as malware using Google. AdAware found 306 items including remnants of BDE, Lop and CoolWeb. This POS isn't on the Internet yet. There's about 2000 bad registry entries to deal with I have been cleaning the rgistry by hand along with jv16. It had every version of AOL fromn 5.0 to 9.0 plus AIM from AIM95. I deleted a lot of music and game downloads. I am going to transfer Avast over to it shortly. AOL and CallWave need to go along with Real Player. Here's what my log looks like so far. Logfile
  15. I have a black light for my case but didn't install it. Seeing as my case has the side removed and it faces the monitor I think it may impair my vision.
  16. From what I understand XP Home support is supposed to run out in 2007 and XP Pro in 2011. XP's SP3 is to be released after Vista.
  17. He answered you Marty. -regsvr32 urlmon.dll didn't work plus in your signature for the quote to work you forgot to add the tag

  19. Running a firewall? Have you allowed IE Outbound permission? Error: "Page cannot be displayed" (Server or DNS error)
  20. I was just at another forum and someone bought PC133 at ebay and was sent unmatched unknown brands that were not even compatible with each other. One stick worked in his board and the other didn't. You have to watch out for this at ebay. Some sellers just pull out memory from different PCs and toss them in a box. When you order they just grab the number of sticks ordered without matching them. This is especially bad when wanting the memory for proprietary PCs.
  21. Some manufacturers made combination PC100/133 that was compatible with either. Many of the early motherboards were finicky with memory. I have a Shuttle AI-61 Slot A board that will only use PC100. With this old memory you are better to order it as needed. No sense is spending money for stocked supplies that may only work in limited boards. Also remember many of the old Gateways, Dell and etc. needed specific type memory.
  22. Ctrl > Scroll The scroll wheel needs to be clicked first before you can change font size while scrolling.
  23. You have to either do a repair or fresh install when changing to a different motherboard on a PC running XP. The computer cannot boot up with the previous XP install due to incompatible drivers. Replace Motherboard on a Windows XP System
  24. Did you run the Internet Connection Wizard? You wil need to setup a different Network account on the laptop. Make sure you revert back to the original Network account at work.
