  1. If she has Eudora or Outlook . If IE-View-Text Size does not stick.... More info. "Larger" font size keeps reverting to "medium"
  2. You can use the XP upgrade disk and install it on another partition or hard drive. When prompted you will need to insert the ME disk. I chose to install XP on a second hard drive independent of my 98SE hard drive. I removed my 98SE drive before installing XP on the other drive. Instead of having the boot.ini recognize 2 different OSes I use a boot floppy that was created from XP files with one of them being altered. With both drives hooked up I can leave the floppy out and the PC boots to 98SE. With the floppy in the drive it boots to XP. I figure once I get used to XP and it is running like I
  3. Lots of Febreze took care of most of the smell. It took making a pot of coffee this morning to better the aroma in here. I wnet out to the garage and dug through some of the equipment from my old bar and found a small Goldstar microwave. I let it sit overnight to let the moisture dry out before trying it this morning. I now remember why it was out in the garage. The timer doesn't work. I put a bowl of oatmeal in and set it on 2 then took the dog out to do his business. I came back in and the microwave was still running. Oatmeal all over. I'll have to get one of those cooking timers and only
  4. That's a decent unit. Make sure to increase the memory.
  5. I'm still learning XP. I don't know if I could handle MS-DOS. That's such a big jump. hahahaaha!

  7. If it's a "cherp" then the hard drive may be starting to have a problem.
  8. Listen closely and count the beeps. What motherboard do you have?
  9. I just had a nice fire while cooking dinner. My microwave burned up while heating my corn. What a stench. Goog thing it's trash night. I tossed it out next to the trash cans. I bought it about 7 years ago. I guess those Taiwan el-cheapos don't last long.
  10. XP is running just fine. Right now I'm in the process of changing permission settings in the firewall and further tweaking my settings. I got tired of searching for certain folders so I created desktop shortcuts to them. I installed TweakUI to help control some items.
  11. Win98SE would run like a champ on that PC. Those specs are at the very low end to capably run XP. A minimum of a 6-8GB hard drive would be better. Of course you would need to turn off System Restore or set it's capacity lower. Did you find and install WinXP compatible drivers for the video card? Xp's drivers on the CD are basic. Even the motherboard drivers should be XP compatible and downloaded from the manufacturer. IF you can't find XP drivers try Win2K drivers.
  12. I went through that list yesterday. I thought about PSP7 but because reviews were better for Paint.NET I tried to install that instead. CPU usage jumped to 100% and the install froze. I tried to install it in Safe Mode Administrator account and it opened right up but warned that it can't install in Safe Mode. I think I need more memory for that. I'll try the PSP7 instead. Basically I need something that crops better than Paint and lets me create banners and other such graphics. I downloaded PSP7, Avery Design Pro and Google Earth. Next is Terregan.
  13. I fully updated XP and disabled the risky services when I first installed it. I downloaded, installed Bootvis and have let it do it's thing a few times as I add more programs. I used Startup Control Panel to disable crap that doesn't need to run. The heaviest load on memory is my anti-virus. On bootup I am using around 220MB. The only thing by my clock is my anti-virus. I plan on buying more memory and a newer larger hard drive soon.
  14. Now that I have installed WinXP what are some of the must have programs. Also where do I find decent icons that are not asscociated with malware/spyware. I tried to install Paint.NET but it kept freezing during install. I only have 512MB of RAM. I did install and update .NET 2.0. I may try GIMP. I have Ultimate Paint on the 98SE drive but it isn't much better than MS Paint. I will download Terregan to mess with. I use IrfanView for an image editor and love it but I woud like something with a bit more options that's free for now. I can't afford Photoshop. I don't listen to music on the PC. I a

  16. I still remember our old B&W RCA TV. My mother didn't replace that with a new color TV until 1974 and she worked for GE. My parents got cable at the same time. It was a box setup with buttons and a long cable that allowed the old man (step-dad) to set it by his chair. He ruled the TV. She was happy with that B&W. My old man (real father) had bought it new when I was born. Our foolish dog figured out how to turn it on. This usually occurred at midnight when everyone was asleep. When I moved out at 16 in 1970 the first thing I bought was a Zenith combination color TV and stereo for my ap

  18. IrfanView can do batch conversions. The best thing is it's free. Chappy just used it to do his wallpapers he posted. I haven't found out everything it does, but it is an amazing image editing program. I believe it evens does slideshows.
  19. Have you added a printer or other such device lately? Is Windows Audio disabled in Services? Read the sites in my reply at your other thread.

  21. Yes you can download Avast and burn it to CD. When you download it just don't run the file. Burn the .exe to your CD. Don't forget the registering part at the Avast website to get the registration code sent by email. The program is free but needs to be registered. You can use the neighbors email address or yours. If you use yours just write the registration number down so it can be inputted into Avast after it is installed. The registration lasts for 14 months. Good seeing you back around.
  22. I would install an anti-virus program to make sure she isn't infected just to be safe. IE fixes. It's not always malware: How to fix the top 10 Internet Explorer issues
  23. Peace and quiet. I got rid of the last partier at 2PM today. The only casualty was dear old dad. He had the Irish Flu bad. Of course he had to eat everything they put out at the bar including stuff that is on the banned list for his diet.
  24. As long as everything is passing or normal do not be concerned. All that you see at the top in the SMART section of Everest can only be understood by the manufacturer. All of them have different attributes for their drives. If you see anything marked bad/failing or you receive an error through SMART be ready to replace the drive. http://www.santools.com/smart/unix/manual/...tributeview.htm
