  1. None; the registry does not need repair nor does it benefit from cleaning. If your computer will not boot due to a damaged or corrupt registry; then you use system restore to restore the last good registry there was. Registry "cleaners" are bad news; they work by comparing what they find in your registry to their database predictions of what should be there. This database is generally included in the original install and then updated when you install new software or hardware or updates provided you have the correct part of the application running. The software author may create their database

    G15 Worn Paint

Ah, a keyboard; I was thinking Mac G15. How old is that???
  3. Just remember; no kids until you finish college and get good jobs. Don't ruin your life by making a preventable mistake.
  4. The Phoenix transit system sounds just like Dallas. The cost of gas and parking has to be really high to justify the time it takes to get anywhere; and then it rarely gets you all the way, you wind up walking a fair distance to and from stops . So what is this new hobby? Riding the bus?

    G15 Worn Paint

Also note that it is best if you remove the item you are painting. IE if this is a laptop, don't just close the laptop and spray it or try masking off the keyboard and LCD; disassemble things and paint the "case" then reassemble when dry.
  6. So far her show is just on the internet. I heard it may begin airing on Current in mid January but can't vouch for that. In the meantime; the more traffic she gets on their site the more likely it is that they will give her a regular slot on TV http://current.com/users/sarahlane.htm Should have them all.
  7. Yes; and I remember talk about how nice it would be if Current picked up some of the old TechTV content. I guess we need to make a concerted effort to watch her "Pods" and spread the word so that she gets enough traffic that they take notice and start airing them on TV. It is nice to see she is still a go getter and got her foot in the door.

It’ll be a live streaming, interactive, weekly show covering everything that’s new and cool in technology and the web. Just waiting for them to put it on the TV rather than just online.

    Happy New Year

Well, I'll be eating the blackeyed peas for luck and cabbage for prosperity and pork loin just because it tastes good. In fact they all taste good and the new year gives an excuse to make yet another feast.
  10. Happy birthday old friend. Glad you made it.

    H1N1

Well I never really expected it to impact the "complications" since most of them are caused by secondary infections (pneumonia, staph ....). It is designed to slow the replication of the virus so that the immune system can deal with it and win faster; but a vaccine (prevention) is still the best line of defense; not getting sick in the first place beats getting less sick for a shorter time. I saw on a special on H1N1 that they have identified a portion of the flu virus which appears to be common to all flu strains . If they can develop a vaccine that targets that we could have a single shot t
  13. Looks like it is so cold in Canada that you have to wear a coat in the house. Actually cold enough here in Texas to warrant firing up the heater in the bathroom but nothing else. I think to day will be up to 60, but it actually almost had a frost last night and we may actually get down to 24 on Xmas eve.
  14. As JCL said, he is very wrong. The updates are to patch known vulnerabilities; serious security holes which would allow a malicious website to take control of your computer , or gain full access via zero day exploits where they can turn off your antivirus but leave an icon in the system tray so you think all is well; then they can change the function of the X and close buttons to "install silently" and even install without any dialog box of any kind. In the case of .net framework remote system access appears to be most common. http://secunia.com/advisories/37006/ http://secunia.com/advisories
  15. Hi Tyme Good to hear from you again. So many MIA and presumed lost for good. Hard to believe how many years some of us have been internet buddies.
  16. Well, having the proxy checked if you did not do it is a sign that you may have been infected by one of a number of nasties. It is best to have a malware expert check to see if you are clean. Post the logs on the malware board for review. As for is there any reason to update to IE8, yes it is more secure . The main reason new versions of browsers are released is that the old one has been patched so many times it is no longer reliable or that there is a major security hole which cannot readily be plugged in the old version I strongly recommend IE8, and if you do not like it, it is not that har
  17. One and only one antivirus. Two can cause issues; false positives or missed infections. The other thing that comes to mind is that there is an automatic updater which is set to check for updates during the loading of the program and it is having problems getting online to do so . I have encountered others recently with problems caused by spyware doctor's automatic updater not responding (although their problem was during shut down when it would not allow the program to close). The next thing that comes to mind is your mentioning of disabling things. If done incorrectly (IE you used MSCONFIG
  18. Don't you just love it when they tell you you are really sick, at deaths door and in need of massive intervention; then they tell you to wait and wait and wait; only to say it all must have been a mistake? Reminds me of when the Dr told my OL she had tested positive for colon cancer. They scheduled a colonoscopy to decide what to do . Six weeks later the results were back and they said no , no cancer we are baffled. Only then did I go through all her medications and discover that one of them had side effects which matched all her symptoms. She told the doctor and he said no way, it does not

    H1N1

I agree, leaving vaccine development and distribution in the hands of industry is a failure; especially when combined with a hodge podge of government agencies handling distribution. We need , as a matter of public health and national (homeland) security to have an effective and fast vaccine development and distribution system. One thing we should have learned from the H1N1 pandemic is that we may have time but not as much as originally anticipated. We need to have an adequate supply and we need it priced so that people will get immunized. Left to industry the cost will be as high as they can
  20. Yep, like Hitest said, all you have to do is update to SP3. Basically as has happened with XP with no service packs and SP1; they are not going to be making any more patches for SP2 after that date; they expect that by then everyone should have installed SP3 and hopefully also downloaded and burned a copy of the XP with SP3 CD ISO so that they have that for clean installs so that they do not have to waste money updating the earlier versions.
  21. Use secunia software inspector to see if it shows as vulnerable http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/ Use QFECHECK to see if it installed http://www.theeldergeek.com/using_qfecheck.htm http://blogs.msdn.com/joy/archive/2009/11/20/kb-953297-and-kb974417-fails-to-update-through-windows-update.aspx Indicates that this failure is caused by a corrupted net framework which needs to be removed and then the full net framework resinstalled. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/NET-Framework-Cleanup-Tool.shtml http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AAE7FC63-D405
  22. I agree you should be using IE8, but first you need to make sure it is not malware. Go to the malware board and post a hijackthis log. Then check in tools=> internet options=> connection Check that you are not configured to use a proxy and that your connection is set as default.

    H1N1

The local Public Health Department is offering free H1N1 vaccines to anyone who wants one. I guess I might as well swing by and get one just in case I have not had it yet. Free is hard to pass up.
  24. Good luck and hope it resolves soon. To many of these multi resistant strains circulating which do not respond to first line drugs and require an expert touch to combat. Just be careful; make em all wash their hands twice and wear gloves ; don't let em give you something worse while you are there.
  25. You are correct; when this happens it is a driver issue. Three options. 1. Turn the webcam up side down now the image is right side up. 2. Buy a new webcam which is Windows7 compatible. 3. Contact the manufacturer and let them know about the problem; then wait and see if they produce a new updated windows7 driver that works.
