  1. Restart the computer As the mouse and keyboard do not work press and hold the power button till it shuts off . A hard stop like this is not something to do all the time but is sometimes the only option. Wait thirty seconds and restart. Start tapping the F8 key once a second until you get a boot options menu and choose safe mode. Go to start=> programs => accessories => system tools => system restore. Choose to restore to a previous state and choose the most recent date before this happened (note you have to choose a bold date) apply and let it do its thing and reboot to normal mode
  2. My rule of thumb is that if it offers a thirty percent increase in performance it is worth it unless it is a top of the line still not reached the sweet spot processor. Under thirty percent improvement it would have to be a real bargain. So a third of 2.2 is about 0.7 so the thirty percent point would be 2.9 But you say 2.6 is the max this is 0.4 GHz or 18% increase. Call it 20% for round number purposes. Is a 20% improvement going to be noticeable? Probably not unless your CPU usage is frequently maxed out (check the task manager =>Performance=> cpu history. Leave it open and minim
  3. I miss him too; along with all the other members of the old guard who have passed; and the young ones like Drew lost before their time. I remember when he had a pic of a panhandler with a sign "Why lie, I need money for a beer" taken at the old rail trestle by white rock lake in Dallas a mile or so from my house as his sig. It used to really crack me up . Wish I had saved it.

Yes, but doesn't Bill Gates retain 51% of the stock? IE he is the shareholder whose vote counts? Not really sure but I would guess that a lot of companies retain controlling interest (preferred stock?) and assign the voting rights to their board of directors.

I second that marty, rest up and get well. I would rather hear from you less frequently than not at all. Best wishes.

Not the first person I have seen have this happen. Worst is when they have added a filter / blacklist for "Postmaster" in the sender so that they never get the full mailbox notification. Then suddenly they find that they are not getting any new email and think the world is ignoring them or that the ISP is having problems.
  7. You have a very dangerous trojan Agent / eson infection. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX IT YOURSELF Have a malware expert guide you through. Improper removal of this infection will result in not being able to login to windows so it is vital that you have a person who knows how to deal with it properly guide you through and fix things in the correct order. DO NOT DELETE ANY FILES OR RUN AUTOMATED REMOVAL TOOLS until the startup entrirs F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe,C:\Windows\system32\drivers\smss.exe, O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\Windows\System32\CIRCoInst32.dll Have been pr
  8. Well wasn't the vote basically along party lines? So a Democrat siding with a South Carolina Racist is really unexpected. We will have to see what he was thinking or if he just plain was not. Kind of like Texas Senator Kay Hutchinson voting against confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor because she was a Latina. (So did John Cornyn) Pretty much put her likelyhood of getting re elected in the outhouse pit; so she announced she plans on resigning from the Senate to run for Texas Governor. (Cornyn defeated Texas National Guard Col Rick Noriega in his last race http://en.wikipedi
  9. I think calling them CZARS is a misnomer and exagerates their position. Whether it is the media or opposition party or the President himself calling them Czars; the term is used way to loosely to cover a wide range of positions. The reality is that the President needs advisers on subjects in which he is not an expert and he needs middlemen to bring to his attention important events and data. He cannot possibly read all the material provided so middle managers are a necessity. Some of this is done by civil servants; positions established by Congress. But if Congress has failed to act , failed
  10. Slimbrowser is another IE skin (clone).
  11. I think there is a security issue ; along with the whole bundled apps tied into windows more deeply than some like which caused the abandonment of Outlook Express and its change to Windows Live Mail. Needless to say I do not recommend using internet applications which have had support abandoned and are no longer patched. Looks like the last time they had a patch for OE was in May 2006; not really a good idea to keep using something this old.
  12. Yeah a ten year old OS which has not had any patches released in years is not really internet safe no matter what antivirus you have. If you are having problems finding an antivirus; it is doubtful that other software is being updated and it thus has tons of zero day exploits which will allow malicious sites to disable your antivirus, silently install software to make you part of a botnet without you even noticing anything is up and have a field day. Best to learn linux and switch to ubuntu now; or call it a good life and retire the PC.
  13. Good to hear from you Marsh. I know the joys of the bag , and sure was glad when they decided to reconnect things. (I still remember going into a convenience store I had been a hundred times before to buy a six pack and having the clerk pull a gun and say "Ok buddy, raise your shirt"; apparently thinking I was shoplifting. Seeing the bags (Yes I actually had a double) filled with gas and crap he looked ready to puke and said "Put it back down, put it back down". You sure got lucky with the UPS guy; did they ever find out what the initial cause was? (Dead bowel causing toxic shock?). Yeah
  14. Do you just mean Internet Connection Sharing? IE you connnect the PC wirelessly to the router and then share the PCs connection with your other device? http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126

hmm never thought to check what I am I can still see the trash can.
  17. Well, I would never trust the advice of newbies who sign up just to promote a product which has in the past been flagged as a rogue by two of the great names in the fight against viruses and malware. Is it still bad? Who knows; but I definitely would not advise wasting money on it. If they have reformed they owe it to the community to provide a free version which is fully functional and does not just prompt you to buy the full version as do a great many reputable firms emisoft (a squared) included. http://www.securitystronghold.com/ Security Stronghold Company 69-16/1, 28 Army Street Astrakh
  18. Agreed; as with a lot of legislation while the intent may be benign and clear the actual wording is so obscure and convoluted that even the authors are probably confused. Then along come the lawyers picking things apart to benefit themselves and if possible their clients and you wind up with a real mess which often has to be amended to restore the original intent, or at least come close.
  19. The government owns the streets and airports. The original bill was horrible. It gave the President complete discretion to decide what networks were 'critical infrastructure' and what events were 'cybersecurity emergencies'. As far as I can recall, there was no oversight at all. I'm not sure the President was even required to inform Congress about their decisions. That alone would have been bad. What made it horrible was section 14(a)(1): "The Secretary of Commerce [...] shall have access to all relevant data concerning [critical infrastructure networks] without regard to any provision of law,
  20. I would say that you could play the PPT on your computer and use a capture to avi program . Jake Luddington covers converting PPT to WMV and AVI http://www.jakeludington.com/powerpoint/20...ppt_to_avi.html Note that he says that there are likely to be problems and issues. Another option (not free) http://www.bytescout.com/how_to_convert_po...t_to_video.html Here are some freeware options to check out http://www.softplatz.com/freeware/powerpoint-to-avi/ These are probably shareware http://ppt-to-avi.downloadsoftware4free.com/ http://www.supershareware.com/get/ppt-to-avi.html http://www.download

    Earth Quake

Ah but nitrogen is on thing and liquid carbon dioxide another. Liquid CO2 is a heavy duty solvent; and can act as a lubricant. The nitrogen under similar temp and pressure will remain a gas and even as a liquid is not a solvent or lubricant. Speaking of lubricants, in proper circumstances (like when the hydrated magnesium silicate - TALC lubricates a fault line) lubricants will keep the quakes small and smooth , while where the fault line is dry it will grab and lurch. But therein lies the rub. The small slips can put added stress on areas that cannot slip and eventually lead to the big one.

    Earth Quake

Just wait till the eco freaks get carbon sequestration programs underway. If I were a gambling man I would lay odds that they will stir up all kinds of earthquakes by pumping pressurized liquid carbon dioxide into deep wells.
