Well, I would try scheduling chkdsk to run on next boot (start => run , type cmd , hit enter. In black box type chkdsk /f /r (note space after chkdsk and before /f and between /f and /r) hit enter . Should say cannot run would you like to schedule to run on reboot. Choose yes. May need to disable goback. Third party defrag; well then you need to download TweakUI from the microsoft power toys http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downloads/powertoys/Xppowertoys.mspx Run it from Start => programs => Powertoys=> tweakui Select general on left pane but do not expand it On right side

Peerguardian2 w/ Vista, driver problem
Pete_C replied to jamaicaman's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
IMHO there is no reason to be running Peerguardian. It will not protect you from anything; since the RIAA etc do not use "entrapment" posting media on their registered domains for you to try to steal so that they can catch you. They use a totally different method to determine who is trafficing in pirated media. -
Old Intel webcam no longer supported Webcam EXP needed
Pete_C replied to spirittoo's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Time to buy a new webcam??? They have made massive strides in the quality and the price has dropped; so that would be my first suggestion unless this is a really great cam. If so then you can try the driver for the older os and then run the software in compatability mode. It will be slower and not as good as running up to date hardware and software but it may work. -
C:\Program Files\Norton GoBack\GBPoll.exe My first thought is that GoBack is at fault Constantly checking to see if anything changed so that it can back it up. Next would be this O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AvaFind] "C:\Program Files\AvaFind\AvaFind.exe" /minimized any file search utility can cause this behavior if it conflicts with windows search indexing. My third thought based on the lack of 04 entries and the disparity between them and entries in services (023) and winlogon (020) entries is that you disabled something incorrectly (used MSCONFIG) and only got part of it. The remaining part is still

I was thinking more along the lines of a robot (ala bender or the Terminator) grim reaper. But searches for Robot Reaper just turn up the airforce predator drone. Sorry, I can do architectural and mechanical design and modeling and limited photoshop but I am not an artist and couldn't draw something like that myself.

Antioxidants my A*** that is old school and really not valid; most of that crap is disproven. On the otherhand, there is a compound called Naringenin which is present in Grapefruit rinds; It is the most potent naturally occurring antiviral that is safe to take. In NIH supervised tests it even stopped hepatitis virus from replicating. Available as naringen

BIOS won't Change Max HHD Capacity!
Pete_C replied to spirittoo's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Been a very long time since I saw one with a 2GB jumper. Common these days is the 120(128)GB jumper but 2GB was so long ago. Yeah, old school things we forget and overlook still pop up. -
I think the big problem back in 76 was that a lot of folks who never had had a flu shot lined up for the swine flu shot because of media publicity. The downside was that a lot of folks who never knew they had egg allergies , wound up getting a flu shot based on egg for the first time and had allergic reactions and many died. (well the record shows "dozens died within hours" of receiving the shot, obvious anaphalactic shock from allergic response) .This out of 40 million vaccinated; not hundreds or thousands of deaths, just a few dozen. ( In its final reckoning, the government counted 25 de

BIOS won't Change Max HHD Capacity!

http://www.evertek.com/viewpart.asp?auto=25925&cm_mmc=Evertek-_-email-_-NA09.AUG.06-_-D845GERG2-BO-R Well, socket 478 P4 should definitely support more than 2GB hard drive. Have you enabled LBA ? Have you changed the hard drive to "Auto" defined and then clicked auto detect drive? Preset hard drive settings (where you set the cylinders, head, sectors, and hard drive size manually ) went out years ago and are there just for legacy purposes. Modern Hard Drives should be set to auto defined and then you click the auto detect drives option in the bios. It will query the drive and download -
Good to hear that all is well. Marty; flu season like hurricane season is reversed between NZ and the US. Flu spreads fastest when the air is dry ; that is why mom always set up the steam vaporizer in the sick room. In humid air, the virus particles absorb moisture, grow and sink to the ground where they stick to the surface and die and are eaten by scavenging bacteria. In dry air they remain airborne and survive indefinitely until they find a victim to infect. Most cases of swine flu are mild; especially amongst healthy folks who have weathered one of the previous two major outbreaks. T

To late in the season for Hurricanes to hold together. You guys down under are just entering cyclone season; but up here they degrade quickly to "tropical depressions" once they hit the cold water or land. Just a good soaking rain event with some gusty winds; not even as tough as a Texas thunderstorm (IE it will have less than 45MPH winds, and we normally get 65-70 in a good wave of boomers busting through). But thanks for the concern Marty. My Mother In Law lives in Alabama and is probably going to call and bitch about getting to much rain on the farm, just like she does when it gets dry.

Windows 7 upgrade wont reboot successfully
Pete_C replied to StealthG's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
This sounds like the vista service refusing to unload loop issue. I posted about it on G4 and Microsoft is aware of it and has instructions for dealing with it. Basically you forgot to disable some items you should have disabled / uninstalled prior to upgrading and it is killing the upgrade. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975253/ is one there are a couple others similar to it. -
OK, what's the deal with Alt+Tab in Windows 7?
Pete_C replied to JDoors's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
I know what you are saying. I configure several apps I use to have right click as enter; I go on the web and keep right click after I enter a search term at google for example. Probably something I can do about it in Firefox; but is it worth the effort? -
Welcome, and don't just post once and disappear; come back and share some more.

OK, what's the deal with Alt+Tab in Windows 7?
Pete_C replied to JDoors's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
I think this is one of the new "Features" trying to make Windows 7 more MAC like. Probably need to read one of the tutorials on using the new Windows 7 dock and spaces or whatever they are calling it. http://gizmodo.com/5131933/giz-explains-why-the-windows-7-taskbar-beats-mac-os-xs-dock Instead of alt tabbing you are supposed to mouse over the dock and watch the preview and click to select. http://www.istartedsomething.com/20090105/measuring-up-windows-7s-new-super-taskbar/ -

Hi Thomas. I spent almost three years in Fulda , back in the day. Loved the summer; hated the siberian express; but at least spring always came early. Used to really enjoy the volksmarches and beer. Great beer, especially the Kloster brauerei at Kreuzberg, although the stuff down around Kassel is not bad either.

As noted, while it was state of the art in the past it has become apparent that malware continues to evolve. Other tools such as RSIT and Old Timers , give additional information such as files and folders created in the last thirty days which are extremely useful in identifying an infection. Sure there are other tools such as combofix which will do this; but combofix is very dangerous when in the hands of an amateur or if run when certain specific infections are present. While Hijackthis is still a usefull tool for preliminary screening and cleanup; often it leaves you asking for a followup

Most likely rats. They are attracted to the wiring because of sodium used in the insulation that they confuse with salt. My solution was to buy some of those rat poison blocks and super glue them to the firewall (inside of engine compartment) where other animals (cats etc, select the locations carefully) . Use the ones that say they kill on a single feeding. Mist them with a little salt water for best effect.

Yep, they already have Xmas stuff out in stores. The alleged reason is that credit is tighter and the stores cannot pre order as much merchandise as usual so when hot items sell out they are sold out. Not sure if that holds water but I really hate having xmas and thanksgiving stuff out before Halloween. I think I will respond by hanging my Xmas lights the day after Halloween instead of waiting till after Thanksgiving. I think I will try an Alton Brown, and use a hotplate to convert my brinkman smoker from charcoal to electricity. If it works maybe I will use it to smoke a turkey. Low and slow

Installing New Ram - First Time
Pete_C replied to ramdude's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Depends on the time of year and humidity as well as case design. Most of the time, like TT says; just discharging yourself to the metal case which is grounded through its cord and then unplugging it is sufficient. When it is especially dry (winter) or when there is not an easy to access metal case (laptop for example, or case coated with sound deadening rubber ) I do prefer the security of a grounding strap to ensure that I am at the same potential as the computer and the ram can likewise seep off to me so it does not discharge through the contacts. -
Setting Up An Ftp Office Server
Pete_C replied to aiustudent87's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Simplistic view which will even work on NAS (Network Attached Storage , hard drive in an enclosure that hooks up to your router / switch just like a USB one does to one computers USB port). 1. For each user create a folder on the NAS. If this folder is to be accessible over FTP make sure to require password protection. 2. On the appropriate comptuer map that folder as s drive in my computer so that it will show up there as a drive in which items can be saved. (you can make one folder for FTP and one for non FTP access also and map both as drives just make sure to name appropriately so they a -
When you click on shutdown or restart (which is just shutdown with the /r switch enabled) the first thing windows does is tell all running applications to save their data and close. If one fails to close, you get a "program not responding " dialog box where you can choose to force it to close although any unsaved data may be lost. Next it saves any changes to the current registry to the appropriate hive files (*.hiv) (saving your settings) . After that it tells hardware to save its drivers and power down or load bios level drivers. If anything goes wrong here, then you get a freeze up wh

Joe joe joe; do not feed the trolls. Ah well. Xmasbus.sys and xmasscsi.sys are part of the virtual drive used by alcohol 120% It is well know to have issues with such things as installing service packs and some other software; resulting in a non bootable system . It is highly recommended that before attempting a major install, or update that you disable all virtual drives. That said, there are two approaches that may work. One is to disconnect all optical drives. It often happens that the virtual drive is actually conflicting with them. Then once you are in windows delete the virtual drive an

Well if you did not say you wanted to edit there are several tools (depending on the format) which will join movies (ezjoiner, combimovie, stoik video converter...) But you want to edit too. Windows movie maker, Virtual Dub??
