Hmmmm, for being the n00best "expert" on the board, I'm pretty happy with myself managing to install gentoo on the first shot (with the exception of configuring xorg properly, but a very easy fix thanks to iccaros)...Since it was just a POS test box, I had no real reason to keep the install...I really didn't think there was anything special about portage....maybe I'm not getting the inner workings but emerge <your app of choice> doesn't seem much different than apt-get install <your app of choice> It did teach me quite a bit about linux and partitioning in general but I don't feel

I remember having to use that temporary fix but couldn't think of the preference name, thanks for posting it...Not that it matters for my instance now anyway but a good reminder for future reference. Odd that I hadn't noticed that FF in Ubuntu was still at 1.0.7...I better not go looking for any new extensions.

If Etch is meeting your needs, I'd hold off a while...I was only using a few apps from the Sid repo when I decided to go all out by changing all Etch repos to Sid and doing an apt-get dist-upgrade. Well, after about 20 minutes all seemed upgraded...then after about an hour of fixing X, then fixing a missing font issue (apparently the font used for everything in gnome...lol), I was back to a working system. All seems to be ok...but I'd definitely not be using this on my main system or any system with vital data on. anyway, here it is all upgraded and a rarity for me--> Gnome 2.12 with stoc

I read the descriptions of each of the programs on this page and think the GodFather might be what you're looking for. hope it helps

I'm all for using the current stable version of whatever distro but when the repos can't provide me with what I need, I'm not opposed to adding a little risk with an unstable repo. But as for the firefox issue, that's fine if they've applied the security fixes but since alot of the themes and extensions require later builds, I had no choice but to get 1.5

heh, yes I may Deb Etch running KDE 3.5 on a toshiba notebook....The problem that I've had with Debian all along is their slow release cycle and not having current versions in the repos, this is where Ubuntu won me over...Debian is for someone that doesn't want things to "just work" (touchpad took some work as well as my wireless card but do-able) and it dares you to break it by adding unstable to your sources.list to get up to date software (jeesh, have to add sid to get firefox 1.5...something wrong with that!!!...lol)

Pc Really, Really Messed Up
tictoc5150 replied to X-Cannon's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
First off, are the "dinging noises" POST beeps? and if so, take note of whether they're short beeps, long beeps and how many beeps. (POST beep codes) Have you tried reseating all cables and ram? you might've jarred something loose during the clean-up -
Happy Anniversary!!!! Wow, time flies...can't believe it's been a year already

Found this link on distrowatch.com...It makes setting up extra apt-get sources pretty easy (such as getting codecs for multimedia as well as quite few others that aren't in the default ubuntu sources.list) http://www.ubuntulinux.nl/source-o-matic Just thought I'd add for anyone using Mandriva that http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ does more or less the same thing for that distro.

Yahoo Mail Problem In Ff 1.5.01
tictoc5150 replied to tman70's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Thanks for posting the work-around, tman This issue came up when someone asked me how to fix it and I hadn't even noticed the problem on my own machine since I already use keyboard shortcuts to C&P (mine being, shift+insert)...I don't think I could go to the r-click C&P now if I tried but it might help the person that originally asked me to solve their problem. -

A pretty simple job as long as you have a tape deck, a cable to go from the tape deck to your line-in jack on your PC (depending on your tape deck, possibly something like this {cheaper can be found that will serve your purpose}), and a recording program like Audacity (see this page for saving as mp3). Need anymore help, post back

Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I have been with a loose woman The priest asks, Is that you, little Johnny Parisi? Yes, Father it is. And who was the woman you were with? I can't tell you, Father. I don't want to ruin her reputation. Well, Johnny, I'm sure to find out her name sooner or later, so you may as well tell me now. Was it Tina Minetti? I cannot say. Was it Teresa Volpe? I'll never tell. Was it Nina Capeli? I'm sorry but I cannot name her. Was it Cathy Piriano? My lips are sealed. Was it Rosa Di Angelo, then? Please, Father, I cannot tell you. The priest sighs in frustration. You

I can appreciate that link...a couple years back and still new to linux, not getting my wireless working almost turned me off to linux. Every distro I tried wouldn't detect my card and for a new user ndiswrapper can be a bit overwhelming (I never got it to work). So I caved and spent the $20 and voila!, worked like a charm. Anyway, if it weren't for linuxant, I'd either be a unhappy windows user or a guy missing clumps of hair from ripping it out trying to get ndiswrapper to work.

I'm still running KDE 3.4.3 but I doubt this has changed.... In settings>save view profile "xxxxxxxxxxx" there should be a check box for "save window size in profile" I only use konqueror as a file manager so I've set my shortcut to open it with "kfmclient openProfile filemanagement", I'm sure setting it for "kfmclient openProfile webbrowsing" if you use it for that would have the same effect. hope this helps. Not that I have much to offer over the significantly more advanced "experts" but... You are correct...If you check /sbin for dhcpc, it's not there, but dhclient is and when I run sudo dhclient It seems to reacquire my IP

Agreeing with a few others on this....if the code isn't executed, it's not a problem. Not to say that JCL's point isn't valid though. As a windows user I learned to disable the preview pane and still do that out of habit in linux. Good habit to not trigger any beacons in html email anyway.

All 3 PCs stay on 24/7....only monitors turn off....shutting down is for hardware upgrades and windows users
-
Thanks gang Although I can seem to fix most problems in either Windows or Linux (by fix, I mean something other than reinstalling...lol), I still seem to be able to articulate instructions for fixing windows related problems easier then linux issues...Most of the time, Linux users are probably more advanced than I am but I should be ok if I can catch the "new to linux" questions before hitest, iccaros and jcl get to em'....lol

Good to hear it's not something on your end, sucks to have tp wait for them to fix it though. Could you or someone else define what I quoted?

sounds like a rough one, Dragon All I could find on any ubuntu/dhcp problems lead to something wrong in /etc/network/interfaces The only thing I can suggest is check the interfaces file for "auto eth0"
-
Like Dragon said, it isn't cheap...I usually don't recommend any windows software since I'm usually a bit out of touch being a linux user but about the only time I boot to windows seems to be for using Nero. I'm not sure what kind of files you'll be using as raw material but so far, anything that I've wanted to make into a dvd, nero has converted to mpeg....worth the money IMO
