  1. Hey icarros, thanks for taking the time to help me understand this...but before I go changing my fstab I wanna make sure I don't mess something up. not sure what to do since it aready says umask=0 from fstab: /dev/sda1 /mnt/win_c3 ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-1,ro 0 0 thanks again for your time, T.
  2. Hi icarros....I have to agree with hitest on that...I wouldn't mind tellin' people that I run Icarros linux 1.0 as far as the art thing, I think I have some skills, not really pro by any means but can do some pretty cool stuff with PS7....I'd be willing to take a whack at it if you give me a concept or what you'd like it to be. (are you looking for penguin art?...lol)...if you'd like to check out a couple things I did, I made both my desktops in the "Post your desktop" thread (some of the layers are obviously borrowed but I'm not too bad at original creation also) and was runner-up for the bes
  3. I'll second that!!!! I'm definitely glad I have somewhere to go to ask my lamebrain questions....also glad these guys aren't linux elitists that can dumb things down a little for a noob. keep up the great work guys! also worth mentioning, great tip on this thread...although I don't think I'd ever do something as silly as forgeting my root password (no offense TK ), it's cool to know all is not lost
  4. Hi iccaros, If I share the drive in windows (box1), it shows up in (box2) as a folder created by lineighborhood (ex. /home/tictoc5150/mnt/Box1/my movies)....although I don't really need the connection to go in reverse, I set up samba and shared /home/tictoc5150/Documents...this works fine. Now with both boxes in MDK, I tried what you said and apparently I'm doing something wrong. ok, on box 1 the drive shows up as /mnt/win_c3...I chown'd that and made the link (~/Documents/), so far so good, the folder shows up as ~/Documents/win_c3. I check box 2, the link is there (/mnt/Documents/win_c3) but
  5. hey all, sorry to keep cluttering the boards with remedial questions but can't seem to find simple answers or the fact I find things that say it can't be done. OK, I originally set up a WIN/MDK network to watch movies on my laptop kept on an external HD attached to my desktop, worked great since you can share entire drives in windows. I'd like to do the same with both machines booted to MDK...I can share the home directories on both machines with NFS, and that works fine but I can't share drives....I have 2 external drives that I would like to share but get the "you can only share files in you
  6. Thanks for the long reply iccaros... I had already assumed alot of what you said, comparing a standard user on linux to a limited account on windows, and also the fact that most SKs wouldn't know what to do if they even got in but wanted to hear it from someone with far more knowledge than I have...I have a better than average knowledge of how to secure windows but being new to linux and really starting to love what it has to offer (already became my default OS on the 2 machines I've installed it on), wanna make sure I'm not leaving myself open to trouble. thanks again, T.
  7. I know security is all in how you set it up...obviously, if you don't set a password on anything it would be less secure. the majority of people would claim that linux is more secure than windows, while a few respected knowledgable opinions around the message boards indicate that a default install of pretty much any distro would be less secure than windows. so, my question is, "How do I secure my linux box?" for example, I did a default install of MDK10.1, I left it set to "standard" security, I set my root and user password...not running a firewall (not too worried, I'm behind a router....but
  8. hmmmm, the same code on my laptop produced no results...just sat there like a $*** I think the screensaver problem is just a MDK bug but another thing I found was that I can't play "armagetron" on the laptop and I can on the desktop...this kinda hints at a graphics config problem but I set it to what I think it should be (not like there were any options, it wouldn't work otherwise). lol....didn't take me long enough to make me go AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!! after finding a server that let me in I still wasn't really happy with the speed and tried switching, that's when I started getting the er
  9. Hi Nerelda, being a guy, I'd have to say #1..... being somewhat artistic, I'd say #9...I also like the super close-up face but I'd definitely change hue/saturation to match my desktop theme. ever take a crack at making your own?...I haven't used a pic that I didn't photoshop at least a little in a few years.
  10. direct rendering: Yes That's what it should be, right?
  11. With multiple installs of 10.0 Community, I never had a problem with getting updates...10.1 was very hard to get to connect on both machines...I don't think it's a version problem (community vs official)...I just kept pluggin away at it, trying every server and finally got it to connect....betting yours would too. a few days ago there weren't any updates, then the day before yesterday there was about 80 (security)..all buffer overflow vulnerabilities....no bugfixes yet. I hardly let my mouse rest often enough for the screensaver to kick in so it's not a huge issue but I just like things to wo
  12. Hi hitest, so, I got bored and installed 10.1 on my desktop too...all is good with the exception of having to cough up $20 to linuxant for my netgear wg311 (but hey, it works great and no more headache from an atheros chipset)....I don't seem to be having some of the bugs I was having on my notebook but still no GL screensavers and most of the ones that are installed don't work, some work when I click "test" but when in actual operation the screen just goes black, others don't even work when I click test....2 extremely different PCs both with the same problems kinda makes me think it's a man
  13. not sure of a way to fix a WMV...have to agree with Nerelda on that but if you said avi, i'd suggest virtualdub to cut out the bad frames...done that a few times and worked like a charm
  14. Hey Hitest, Have to say I'm not that impressed with it, definitely buggier than 10.0, still having some issues I'm working on...nothing major but minor irritations that weren't present in 10.0. guess theres some problems with mandrake update, went googling and found I wasn't the only one, but got that ironed out. Can you tell me wtf Xorg is and was it in 10.0?...could've sworn it was Xfree86 (or something like that) but Xorg config seems to be the root of my graphics problem, no matter how I config, I can get maybe a couple screensavers work, oh and all GL screensavers, GONE!!!!..again, I'm no
  15. Happy Birthday Shadow and best wishes for many more. the beer probably went skunk by now, switch to the hard stuff, then go over and give some "good" tech advice on G4....lol
  16. I wonder is the Secretary of Veterans Affairs ever thought "gee, if 17 people were to die in a mysterious hunting accident, I'd be da man!!!!"....lol
  17. wow, very cool!...nice to be appreciated..thanks! kudos to all that made em', B. must've had a heck of a time picking, alot of good ones in the thread. I also liked njustice's too and was pretty sure that would get picked...congrats to him!

  19. hey JSKY, sorry to point out the similarites in the color...lol... but hey, if you like it, thats all that counts....it's not like it smells like it!!!!!....lol fllatiron_2..........yep, thats what I'd expect....I've tried not using themes but I spend alot of time in front of the computer (maybe too much) and need things to look cool. there is a noticable improvement in performance when set like that though and can see why some would go without the eye candy.
  20. thanks hitest....all went well but found myself having to remember how to fix the driver / firmware issue for my WG511 again...was surprised how fast I got it fixed though...(and did most of it through command line...yeaaaaa for me!!!...lol)..guess my memory isn't as bad as I thought the review I read on 10.1 indicated that the guy had the same wireless card I have and it set up seemlessly on install....what I didn't take into account was that netgear in their infinite wisdom made the same card with a bunch of different chipsets ...oh well, isl3890 is easy enough to find. as for the overall i
  21. thanks for the tip...checked my Kaspersky defs and it's dilligent as ever. that and I-Worm.Bagle.au both listed as 10-29-04
  22. My favorite is KDE, but have been messin' around with enlightenment also, kinda neat. I don't really like Gnome too much, a little too minimalist...as you can see if you look at my "post your desktop?" post, I like to make things look cool...useful comes in a close second...there just doesn't seem to be a WM that you can tweak the appearance of as much as KDE....or at least I haven't figure out how yet. gonna be installing KDE3.3 when I upgrade to 10.1, interested to know what kind of changes were made.
  23. hey hitest, was sure the official was gonna be a while and figured you probably have it before me but saw the press release and just had to have it...next thing I knew, I was signing up to be a mandrakesoft member....I generally don't like paying for things that can be had for free (legally) but I really like mandrake and in a moment of generousity felt like giving something back...$66 for a year, isn't too bad to have access to things not released in the free download, not to mention, sooner than the free d/l becomes available....felt like a worthy cause considering they just filed chapter 11
  24. thanks, Nerelda! flatiron__2.... surprised you're even using luna...most people that don't use a desktop pic are generally the same ones that have it set for best performance. and JSKY...trying to be the only one on the planet using the olive theme?...lol...if I didn't use windowblinds I'd probably use silver but the green reminds me a little too much of baby $***...lol...cool pic though and I agree with both of you, one thing windows has is alot of shortcuts to get what you want to open, no need for desktop clutter
