tictoc5150 replied to tictoc5150's topic in Linux & Unix Tips and Tricks
oops, don't know how that happened from edidting the first one. oh well, I'm not really a gamer so I cleaned my room instead can I come out now?....lol -
Mandrake 10.1 Official released I know not everyone is interested in this but I've read several reviews about 10.1 and find the changes mentioned very cool....alot of improvements in hardware support and alot more laptop friendly (not that 10.0 was bad). grabbed my torrent this morning and should be done d/ling all 2.71GB (4CDs) in about 2 hours...can't wait to bork my system tomorrow...lol Does anyone know about KDE3.3(good, bad, buggy, or different in any major way?) ...3.2 is installed by default but 3.3 is included on CD4.

Hey Michael, cool pic...what game is that from? and Nerelda, looking forward to it guess I'll post my windows desktop too...I'm a big Luis Royo fan (and tattoos & piercings) and had a little fun with a couple of his works in PS7 for this one...(censored since B might give me the boot ) replaced with link

sorry if this seems lame or in the wrong place ( it does involve graphic design though )but I really get a kick out of looking at others desktops...also seems to inspire me to change it when I let mine stay the same for a long time....if you made yours I'd love to see it, and the same goes if you didn't...just please don't be using bliss xp...lol my current mandrake/kde desktop: Replaced Image with Link

Happy Birthday, Bearskin!

Hey Marty, I read the post about the system tray, and while I think it is a little strange, I'm all for changing things to how I want them...maybe he has a clock widget...maybe he doesn't care to see what programs are running or have the functionality of r-clicking an icon...lol I think his question was answered about as well as it could be...by turning of the clock and a regedit you can make it damn near gone but it's still there....I don't think it's possible to completely remove it without consequences.

jcl, just got a kick outta reading a review of mandrake10.1...looks like a solution to my wireless problem. from linuxforums.org: "It correctly detected and auto configured 2D drivers for my ATI Mobility card and it was able to detect and configure my NetGear WG511 wifi card without even having to download the firmware." gonna have a tough time fighting the urge to install it til official gets released
-
hmmm, just checked em' out....does look interesting...wish I would've bought a centrino, all this penny pinching is gonna give me arthritis...lol I do like the sound of... "10.1 Community is the first Linux operating system to offer advanced, yet user friendly, power management for laptops, including detection and configuration of ACPI...." am I correct in thinking that even numbered distros are released as officials and odds aren't?...thought I read that somewhere. thought I was the only one who does that kinda thing...lol Those were absolute must haves on my first install, needed the fami

hehe...thanks bozodog, needed a chuckle

I almost had Dominican Republic cats eating tangerines but went with Denmark to not be weird...lol so, whats that mean?....I think different but correct it to fit the norm?...jeesh, I gotta cut that out!...lol
-
great idea!...help out dolts like me!!!....lol and hitest, same here, not too long ago I almost uninstalled to just use windows, now it's swingin' the other way and am considering making my notebook mandrake exclusive. how often do you upgrade? ....everytime there's a .1 .2 .3?......lol
-
so, I've tried everything you've suggested and still no dice.....It's been something I can live with for quite a while now and have no problem putting up with it....I totally appreciate your assist jcl... learned a bit from this thread and glad to have someone with your knowledge around the boards...I either need to bork my system more often or we need more linux posters here...by reading replies by you, uberpenguin, Hitest, TheLetterK, iccaros, and maybe a couple others that slip my mind, I almost feel like I learn something.

kinda tough to get any nice detail with a pic that small but here ya' go and I hope I'm not stepping on Michael's toes but made one for your site too....I made it to fit just about the exact size of the frame.
-
the bad thing about the package manager is that I'd probably have learned more by now with out it....seems the only time I learn how to do anything is when I have to do it myself
-
hey dk, I'll take a shot at it tomorrow when I have a little free time. if you wanna give some precise requirements, that'd help out a little. size? exact text?...any slogans?
-
hey jcl, I really appreciate you takin the time to help out a numbskull...lol as for what you posted: 1) "does "cat /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug" show something like "/sbin/hotplug"?" yes 2) "is the "firmware" agent is present (call /sbin/hotplug without any argument to show a list of available agents)" I think so... [tictoc5150@localhost tictoc5150]$ /sbin/hotplug Usage: /etc/hotplug.d/default/default.hotplug AgentName [AgentArguments] AgentName values on this system: dasd firmware ieee1394 input net pci scsi tape usb 3) "have you copied the firmware file into the folder expected by firm

hey Nerelda, if the girl in your sig is a depiction of you or your style, I think he should've done better than a 1.8GHz for a girl in PVC clothes...lol....j/k congrats ..hope assembly goes trouble-free

hey guys...I posted this sometime ago at the old TTV linux board but didn't get much of a response...see if you can help me out here. following someone's how-to, I did a firmware patch for a netgear 511G and added my config to the bottom of /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/599local...all went well...but.....when booting up it gets to bringing up eth1 and hangs for about a minute then says failed, but as soon as that happens the lights on my card come on and have internet once in kde. the top of the 599local file says: # This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts. # You can put your own ini

hey jcl, I used rpmdrake to clean up and apparently it does everything, I left my original 2.6.3-7(which I never had a problem with) and the newest 2.6.3-19 (no problems so far)...all traces of kernels between those are gone, nothing in the places you mentioned thanks again
-
thanks jcl, much appreciated

hey all, while I have "some" (translate: a little) working knowledge of linux, I find I can come up with some of the most remedial questions that make me feel like an idiot when posting. For instance, when upgrading kernels, it puts the new one listed in the boot menu, I've upgraded 3 times since installing mandrake 10.0 and all kernels remain, do I uninstall previous versions?....leaving the one prior to upgrading seems like the right thing to do so you have a bootable kernel should something go wrong with the new...correct? does uninstalling the kernel remove it from the boot menu?...I know

*and visions of chubby little penguins dance in my head* been lookin for a reason to make my laptop linux exclusive, don't wanna find out that they haven't worked out the laptop bug by them stuffing it down my throat
