Yeah, i was considering Debian, but i heard it was quite complicated for a beginner, but i guess not as complicated as i thought. If i only could figure out how to install knoppix on the HD (as debian), i'd be set.... However, a new thing came up that my dad told me. My family has really wanted a DVR (digital video recorder) for our TV, however we don't want to pay the $5 a month for the subscription (from Dish Network). In the past i tried to make one, but failed due to insufficient help from the net, and my dad also wouldn't let me install linux onto the computer, which many of the good prog

Well, when i think of external HDs i think of maxtor...but then again, it may not be the best. But, i recommend you get the HD from a local store, because you'll save on shipping...This isn't a really huge order, so i think it'll be much easier just getting it locally.

Well, for those who don't want to completely lose the feel of a folder, don't uncheck "Use common tasks for each folder." This will keep that blue bar on the right of the window, which shows you the specs for a file, allow you to navigate to other places, etc...

Install/run Apps From Jump Drive
murtu52 replied to mikex's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
I'd have thought exactly the opposite, that HJT would be fine from a thumb drive, but the other 3 wouldn't be. Spybot, AdAware, and AVG rely on Registry entries and have an install cycle. HJT runs as one package, with no installation required. The only caveat I've seen with HJT is not to run it from a temp file. ---------------- Oops! There are HJT Registry entries too, but they seem involed with uninstall only. It would be an interesting experiment to try them from a thumb drive. i agree....i thought this too. However, what makes me think that HJT wouldn't run off a jumpdrive is that it is -
don't worry about it, setting up a router isn't as hard as it sounds-even i've set up one, and everybody knows how stupid i am .... as all the previous posters have said, you can go either wired or wireless. Wireless is a good choice, however its somewhat unreliable and sometimes it is difficult to get signal. Wired, however, will require you to run a wire all the way from the router to the computer--sometimes easier said than done. I say go for wireless, even though its more expensive you are going to like the fact that you won't have to wire down your house. Its your choice, though. First,

I don't mind if its hard to use, and i'm sure it can't run THAT slow, because windows 2000 works pretty well. But please remember, i need the proper drivers to use my wireless-B card....once that works, i can take as much time as i want learning portage, or whatever i please....

Good point. Mandrake is not difficult at all to set-up or install, it installs quickly in about 20-30 minutes. It'll identify all of your hardware, auto-detect your router, your video card. It is very noobtastic. It is a great choice for a first Linux install, it's pretty hard to screw up. It'll auto partition your hard drive too. It is designed to be very user friendly and a lot of the settings are designed for beginners. However, it can be tweaked, you're not limited to the stock install, you can go in and mess around. I run it on a Plll 500 MHz Dell Optiplex with 192 MB RAM. It works
