  1. That little item that Avast found of Panda was the ActiveX control it uses for the scan purpose. When you use the scanner it asks your permission to download the ActiveX installer. The only thing that gets reported back is a listing of detected viruses/trojans/malware found. This enables them to keep alerted to new malware out in the wild. They do not obtain personal information. Panda is one of the most trusted companies in the anti-virus community. Trend Micro's Housecall does the same thing.
  2. its not paranoia, im not scared of getting a virus ( you should see my virus logs), I am just testing out differnt security levels. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The check using one anti-virus installed at a time. Remove all traces of previous versions before installing a new one. This will better determine what works best.
  3. All I run is Panda Titanium with TruPrevent, SpywareBlaster, AdAware SE and IESPYAD. I have visited many sites to see why posters have become infected. My computer has yet to be taken over by malware. Panda emailed me and stated I do not need to use SpywareBlaster or AdAware SE when I complained that Titanium detected those program's files as malware. All AdAware does is find MRUs. I did try SpyBot but it never found anything. I still run the other programs out of habit. Panda stops the malware dead before it can infect my PC. The only thing I haven't tested was P2P sites.
  4. What you're doing is overkill. Many anti-virus programs will conflict with each other causing their effectiveness to be wiped out. Use one real time scanning program and back it up with online scans. Your paranoia may actually get the PC infected easier.
  5. Congrats. I'll just sit here quietly celebrating 33 years of just saying no.
  6. Borrow a WinXP Home disk then format and install. Use RockXP, Magic Jelly Bean or another program to get the XP key. Backup the important data first. Get the eMachine drivers off of their site if the PC isn't too old. I did this with the kids. Their eMachine ran so much nicer without all of the add-on crap.
  7. Is this a laptop or desktop? Do you have the model number correct? The eMachine T6212 Desktop uses 184-pin Dimm DDR 400. It has 4 slots and will support upto 4GB of memory. eMachines Desktop / T6212 184-pin DIMM System Type Desktop Computer Maximum Memory 4096MB Standard Memory 512MB removable Slots/Banks 4 (2 banks of 2) Important information about your system Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules. DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR400 • 2.6V • 64Meg x 64 The correct PNY numbers are; 512MB
  8. The Great Lakes are quite warm this year. We should have mild temps but some heavy lake effect snowstorms. I have a couple friends with plows in case the snow gets too heavy for the snowblower or my back. I figure another 200"+ snowfall this winter for Central NY unless it stays extremely warm due to the lakes and rains most of the time.
  9. my house is set for the winter. The only thing I need to do is pull the mower deck off the tractor and put the snowblower on. Let it snow.
  10. Instead fo pulling the plug have you tried to simulate an actual power loss by tripping the breaker? Try that to see if the software functions properly.
  11. Your sisters are adults. Isn't it time for them to get their own accounts?
  12. Was the program running when he messed with it? Can you exit the Dell diagnostic partition? Have you tried to reboot the laptop to see if there has been any damage to the MBR?
  13. The only program I allow to auto-update is Panda Titanium. All other programs I check for updates manually on Sunday mornings while watching my NASCAR and NFL previews.
  14. Weather is chilly in Central NY. Yesterday's storm took the temps from low seventies to mid fifties. Upper thirties last night. Supposed to climb back up into the seventies for the weekend and through the week. I finished winterizing the inside of the house yesterday. Exterior and cellar next. I am thinking of grabbing a couple of those ceramic heaters to ease the use of natural gas.

  18. Agreed. The lead acid batteries used in UPS devices shouldn't be deep-cycled (discharged). Just plug them in and forget them. They'll usually last for five years plus. The only thing you should be concerned about is not letting them get over heated or frozen. Keep them in an open area indoors. My Belkin has been plugged in, turned on and working fine for three years now.
  19. Just Google: Living in Las Vegas 1.5 million people. 30% Latino. About 6600 people relocate there per month. Average rent $768.00. 5% vacancies. They can barely build housing fast enough. High wages, no state income tax and low cost of living. Summer weather during the spring and fall (70-90F). 300+ cloudless days a year. Mountain area that is 30 degrees cooler in the summer 45 minutes away. Lake Mead 45 minutes away. Major Southern California cities 5 hours away. Pretty much everything open 24/7. Booze, broads and business.
  20. I have used my WinXP Home OEM disk on a Gateway and EMachine that had XP Home (OEM) previously installed on them. You need to use the key that came with the PC. I had no problems activating or updating to SP2. OEM keys work with OEM disks only. You cannot use a Dell disk on a HP and etc. though. I cannot say this will work in every situation.
