  1. My brother in laws desktop is not getting an ip address from the router. I swapped routers, all routers see (port lights up) the desktop. No IP. Router has no access restrictions. I released renewed, run netsh dump. Configured the nic manually....no ip. Any suggestions, I am looking to replace the nic. M
  2. Thanks looking in to this. Made a boot cd a few years back don't remember what I did with it. Don't remember if I even played with it. I do recognize the pages for the Bart CD. M
  3. LOL When playing in the registry back it up or be ready for a fight. When tweaking tweak a little, run the machine like normal for a few days the tweak a little more. Make notes, hard copy, of what you did and when, this will help you figure things out later. I seem to tweak my machine late at night then forget what I did days later. Once you have the machine tweaked like you want and it is purring like a kitten then you have the hard copy of the tweaks that worked and the ones that didn't. Makes for a quick recovery when having to reinstall or when setting up a new machine. M
  4. I am looking for a small portable AV program I can install on a usb drive to scan customer computers. I am downloading AntiVir Personal to try out. Any one have any recommendations? M Also looking at ClamWin....
  5. I install Free AVG on all machines I work on if it has no A/V or the A/V is expired. I also make sure it is set to scan and update automaticly. Some time I see the same machine months later for other reasons and AVG is still there. Bottom line... Get one on trial, try it, if you like it learn to use it, if you don't ditch it and go for another. M

  10. /me jumping into the flames! Hello my name is Mike and I use msconfig. Whew what a relief that was. I use msconfig to stop startup items in XP using the startup tab. I also have google open for any .exe's I do not recognize. I also do a registry tweak to clean out all the items that are unchecked. So far I have not had a machine crash because of the use of msconfig. I do not use other apps to stop startup items because I am greedy with RAM and only want windows to start faster. example a 2 Ghz laptop with XP Home with 198 megs of ram when the laptop can accept 512 x 2, thanks HP. This is almos
  11. WildBlue likes to point to other things when all is not working smoothly. I think they refresh their IP's like every 24 hours, don't remember exactly. I would make a backup of the router config. Do this by going into the firmware page and back up. Reset the router to defaults either through the router interface or with a pin to the reset button on the back. Linksys usually ships routers to plug and go. Meaning it should revert to DHCP and allow the connection. What model and version? M
  12. /me hands Barb the official Geek lapel pin. weep weep welcome Madame Geek Barb. M
  13. hard drives have a "life" span. on or off the life of hardware will come. I agree with the reboot once or twice a week if you will leave it on 24/7. I look at it that the fans are always moving dust and lint, turn it off no dust and lint flowing. And of course you have a decent surge protector or UPS. m
  14. My sister is behind 2 routers. 1 linksys assigning ip addresses 1 netgear running just as access point. Removing the linksys is not an option. I have port forwarding setup in both now, had PF in one then the other.... any suggestions? M
  15. It was a corrupt alcohol 120 file for me. M
  16. Is there a modem or anything else between the router and the internet? If so re you getting an ip address from the modem (cable/dsl) or is it from your ISP. If you get addresses from the modem try turning off the lan dhcp server, this will make the d-link router a switch. If you are getting an address other than 192.168.o.1 then there is a problem. Just verify the connections, lan1,2,3,4 go to pc wan goes to what ever is upstream. Post back M
