A week or so ago we had a short-lived outtage, I wasn't going to bother mentioning it. Sunday, whoa. We had a six-to-eight inch, heavy, wet snowfall and high winds. I woke up and the power had been out for hours, wound up being out for four hours. Came back on for less than half-an-hour, out again for an hour. Off, then on, then off again. This went on over and over until the afternoon, when the power went out and remained out until nightfall (six hours straight). I had just started to light candles and oil lamps when the power finally came on permanently (permanently is a poor choice of word

Other than being illegal there's no similarity between the prohibition of alcohol and the situation with marijuana. Different drugs, different useage patterns, one was entirely legal with millions using it and millions more depending on it for a living before it was suddenly withdrawn from the market, the other's been 'underground' practically forever. Where's the similarity? I don't know what you mean by "it's the main point of my argument." The mob (which, uh-hem, doesn't exist, or so they'd like us to believe) still makes money off of alcohol and tobacco, generally in distribution. There

Why does my tummy always start rumbling when I read one of your food posts? Fresh cheese, yum. And for pennies! Great idea.

I'm not sayin' ...

If it's a 'new' sound, it's probably going bad. The whiring could be the bearings. Back everything up.

Just what is he saying? That people who use the internet are pot smoking law-breakers? Nice. THAT WASN'T THE QUESTION. God I'm sick of lawyer-speak. Then it goes off on the usual disasterous argument comparing marijuana to alcohol and tobacco. Alcohol and tobacco kill tens of thousands of people and destroys tens of thousands of families EVERY YEAR. The government sure makes a ton o' money off of those products though (Gee, ya wonder if that's why 'legalization' is getting traction all of a sudden?), so to hell with people's lives. Just promise to spend the money on medical care, "the chil

I wasn't going to post because I didn't want to be the only skeptic. Let's just say I don't like the idea of using international peer pressure to get you to do something that's solely symbolic, though I do "get" it and turned out my lights anyway. I'm weak. I have NO idea why your bulbs aren't lasting, pay up for the brand name bulbs, maybe? Is it HOW you use them? Flourescents aren't a good choice for fixtures that get turned on and off frequently.

Interesting idea. I don't have problems with Windows '9x's memory resources, I've long-since learned how to manage them (though occasionally I push my luck and open one. window. too. many.). I don't think Windows memory resources applies since if I take the problem drive, call it "A", and swap the position in the USB card's ports with the problem-free drive, call that one "B", the "A" drive is still the problem. But there is the machine's hardware resource allocation to consider (hmm, not necessarily since the hardware doesn't recognize USB anyway, it's Windows '9x's responsiblity). Ooo! I

I remembered to check after I booted up this morning. When I start the computer that particular thumb drive simply doesn't exist as far as Windows is concerned (the second thumb drive shows up and functions as expected). That one drive is not in the device list (the other one is), there are no errors (if there were an error that might imply Windows could see it but not access it, without an error Windows apparently just never saw that the drive was plugged in), and that drive doesn't show up in any Explorer dialogs (while the other one does). I unplug/replug it and Windows miraculously sees

Far as I know, there's no 'safely remove hardware' or 'optimize' setting in Windows '9x, at least not for USB drives. You're essentially on your own to know not to remove the drive while it's being written to. The only safety setting is a warning about using the 'delayed write' setting on removeable drives, though it won't stop you from choosing that setting. With Windows running, if you plug in a drive Windows must be 'polling' the hardware 'cause it immediately 'sees' the 'new' drive and makes it available. If you unplug it it's no longer available. I imagine if you had Explorer open when yo

Why not? Are you looking for an excuse to get a new drive? I assumed that you did not leave an old machine like that all the time. The RAM BIOS startup program surveys hardware resources and needs, and assigns system resources to meet those needs. The startup program begins the startup process by reading the stored configuration information and then comparing that information to the hardware. Does that jump drive contain anything nessasary for the system to run? But to be honest every time I try to research jump drives I end up frustrated as there does not seem to be a lot of information ava

I'm not sure I'd say the system is "flawed" as much as it's immature. In fact, can't that be said of the entire entertainment industry? Changes have been occurring WAY too fast for corporations to keep up, with their lawyers and inertia and business climate. The Sony DRM thing was simply Sony trying SOMETHING to "cope" with changing distribution (that is, stealing). Nobody knows what to do! Glad you mentioned your reasons for having a particularly accute insight into the issue as a few hours after I posted I thought about exactly that: What if someone was stealing YOUR content from your

What is a device boot list? (Hmm, guess I could add a path to AUTOEXEC.BAT, but they're removeable so the OS might choke if the drive's not in the plug or cannot be found.) Since the fix was so easy (unplug-replug) I never dug deeper by checking the device manager while the problem was occurring. I discovered the problem because that drive will not show up in a Explorer dialog boxes (such as Run, Save, etc.) until I unplug-replug it. It's worked before, it still works except for this one bug that's new, Windows 9x does support USB 2.0 (with additional drivers, which I have). Since Win 9x isn

I wasn't aware of the background and current problems, thanks for the thorough explanation. Actually though, I think it's working out EXACTLY as it should. Most people used the opportunity to post videos the way it was intended, and some just stole content. Finding a way to fix it is happening, what more can you do? The suggestion to have a person make each and every decision from the outset is simply unrealistic (considering the volume of posted videos). As for changing agreements over time, I imagine Warner, for example, saw no harm at first, then as the volume of videos increased they saw

A while ago I purchased two thumb drives. I plugged them into the USB2.0 card and use them to backup files, one for financial data, one for everything else. After months (years?) of no problems, one drive does not "automatically" show up when I boot up the computer (Windows 9x). If I unplug the drive from the card then plug it right back in, it shows up and works fine. I tried changing the socket they were plugged into and the same drive does not show up unless I unplug and replug it. It's going bad, isn't it? *****

Maybe they'll change their tune if we send them a box-set of classic Hollywood DVDs?

Oh man, what's the word or phrase for humor that's a little TOO cruel? I mean, it's funny, I get it, but the man dissolves marriages for a living, SHOULD he be making funny business cards for that? Isn't that a little cold?

I REALLY don't get the forwards that try to guilt you into participating. Gee, thanks, "friend."

An elderly woman noticed that her granddaughter felt embarrassed by her freckles. "I love your freckles," she said, kneeling beside the girl and admiring her face. "Not me," the child replied. "Well, when I was a little girl I always wanted freckles," the grandmother said, tracing her finger across the child's cheek. "Freckles are beautiful." The girl looked up. "Really?" "Of course," said her grandmother. "Why just name one thing that's prettier than freckles." The little girl peered into the old woman's smiling face, aglow with kindness and love. "Wrinkles," she answered softly.

In an American history discussion group, the professor was trying to explain how, throughout history, the concept of "beauty" changes with time. "For example," he said, "take the 1921 Miss America. She stood five-foot-one inch tall, weighed 108 pounds and sported a 30-inch bust, a 25-inch waist and 32-inch hips. How do you think she'd do in today's version of the contest?" The class fell silent for a moment. Then one student piped up, "Not very well." "Why is that?" asked the professor. The student pointed out, "She'd be way too old."

Fascist Elements Target Obama Administration.

Quite true. Cripes. We state that so matter-of-factly. We should be ENRAGED. What can be done? We can't run for office because if you're truly honest and looking out for your constituents, you won't get very far. Dang! -
I'm Dutch, we pay no attention to the Irish. (OMG!)

Israel has made concession after concession after concession after concession, repeatedly sat on their hands over the course of decades while rockets rained down on their civilians, only fighting back when the rockets started causing too much damage and killing too many Israelis and citizens of other nations within their borders. The only "peace" acceptable to the people committing those acts of war against Israel would be for all Jews to leave the Middle East: It's in their charter, their leaders say it, their civilians say it. Are you saying Jews must leave the Middle East?
