  1. It's important to know exactly how you got to where you are now. Did you just now add this printer to your existing computer? In other words, were you using your computer without this printer, and you just added it now? If so, when you plugged it in Windows should have recognized that "new" hardware was found and should have presented you with a dialog box to install the necessary drivers for that printer. Windows has to know how to "talk" to everything plugged into your computer, and it uses "drivers" that tell Windows how to use that hardware. Windows MIGHT find a driver for the printer, W

    Filing Taxes

Sometimes I get it done early, sometimes not. This year? Not. I filled out my 'practice' form with the usual hilarity; See page 71, oh, no, you have to fill out form so-and-so first, OK, now see page 10 unless you checked item 3d then see page 12 and fill out the worksheet which requires form XXX (see page 27!), now turn around three times while reciting "Mary Had A Little Lamb" .... Ha! They're SO funny at the IRS. I thought I'd file electronically using the IRS.GOV "free-file" forms. Close, they're SO close to getting it right. I filled out identical forms on the site, BUT ... The
  3. We had a ton of local elections recently, board members, I dunno, librarians? A ton. The list of contested elections was long, but near as I could tell the only ones that applied to me specifically (that is, that I qualified to vote for based on my location) were for "township" offices. I don't know nothin' 'bout what goes on on the township level. I think I saw the township offices a couple of times, years ago, on road trips through the countryside, that's about all I know (and I couldn't find those offices now if I had to). I didn't bother voting for candidates I don't know for an office I k

    I'm Upset

Best wishes to your Dad for an uneventful recovery. Somebody buy that man an exercise cycle ... and make sure he uses it.

    My Project

Does your car have a diagnostics port? With all the changes you've made you might wind up with too many conflicting codes, but since you're doing so much of the work yourself, you might want to invest in a reader. They're not really all that expensive.
  6. Uh-oh. This is very relevant to me right now, I'll be lookin' out for it. I get direct deposit and check that it's there on the day it's supposed to appear, but I can easily imagine late payments considering our state's rocketing unemployment.
  7. I often immediately think of literal responses to questions like that. Few people seem to share my sense of humor.
  8. I thought 'flishing' might be a new word, 'til I read the article. The site I was talking about that takes FOREVER to load is one I use every day, so PLEASE let this article light a fire under coder's behinds. It's part of a larger problem I've noticed since the beginning of computer time: The people making sites often have access to the latest and greatest software and hardware, so they never notice the bottlenecks. They also tend to incorporate the latest oh-so-cool tricks, which inevitably results in even slower load times for proletariat like me.
  9. Flishing? There are quite a few sites I frequent that can use that article, pronto! One takes its time loading the header portion. Then takes its time loading the title portion. Then the sidebar. Then the content portion (but no content yet!). Then the ads start to load. THEN the content loads. Then any leftover scripts or whatever. As soon as I see the content (the text article I'm looking for) I hit the "Stop" button so I don't have to wait any more. Hello? Anybody there? Have you TRIED loading one of your pages? At least they stopped using popup ads.
  10. Well, regardless of how bad things COULD have gotten, or how worried people are or have been, things were bound to return to normal at some point. Thank goodness it appears the worst isn't going to happen -- though it's still early. Texas had surpluses? Not TOO surprising what with oil revenue and all, but you'd think with politicians being politicians all that money would have been squandered. How'd you like to have California-style government? Or the astounding corruption in Illinois? Now if we can just have a recovery without runaway inflation.

    Earth Hour

Seems obvious once you mentioned it, but I never heard anything about the natural radioactivity of coal before.
  12. Since I doubt stimulus money's been distributed to the point where IT can explain the activity, it must be your state's finances have recovered or are expected to with certainty. How's your state's finances anyway? I practically never shop on weekends, but friends and family who do say they never saw any thinning of the crowds, regardless of what's been in the news. During my weekday trips I noticed some signs that could be economic in nature (fewer items stocked, some out of stock items, few shoppers, etc.), but that seems to have cleared right up. Don't know if that's due to the economy or
  13. I haven't noticed any changes locally, though I live far from "the city" so I might be missing the signs. Pete, how much of this activity is just seasonal? It's Spring, of course you're going to see more activity.
  14. For bailout funds that are secured by stocks I can see why there's no end in sight. We CAN'T let anybody fail if getting paid back is tied to the price of that stock. I wonder if that's why the automakers aren't being treated equally? Maybe the money given to them isn't secured by stock?

    Phylosophy

I'm not sure that's actually Gates, but that doesn't change the fact that I agree with it!
  16. I guess they're cheap as all get out, but if 50% of them fail after a year or so ... I know they're not optimal for daily backups since they have limited rewrite capability, but, for the price, I thought I'd try that anyway. Didn't work for me.
  17. Nine bucks! I bought these a while ago at what I thought was a good price, but nine bucks beats the heck out of what I paid. The data was just backups so nothing's lost but that backup, which has already been completed elsewhere. Thanks.
  18. Ohhhhh -- Crab Rangoon. I had that for the first time within the last year. Heaven !
  19. The drives themselves are identical (not the content, but I doubt Windows is smart enough to discern that). They WERE working just fine, one would show up as drive "E" and the next would show up as drive "F." That worked without a hitch for months. I tried booting with JUST the potentially defective drive plugged in and it would not show up unless I unplugged and replugged it (though as the update in my last post states, it never shows up now). The other one that wasn't causing any difficulty always shows up, whether it's the only one plugged in on bootup or if both are plugged in, and regard
  20. I didn't see any new or compelling arguments in that column. At least the interviewee didn't try to say that legalization would be a panacea, eliminating underground drug crime entirely. One "caveat" he repeats several times is actually the crux of the problem with his argument; Reasonable taxation, Reasonable restrictions. Who believes the government WILL be reasonable? What would you base THAT assumption on, history? Or wishes and unicorns? What percentage of the price of a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of alcohol is tax? A "reasonable" amount? Not if you ask anybody paying five dollars fo
  21. I've lived in this house for ~25 years and I STILL have no idea where the powerlines come up out of the ground. I don't SEE powerlines anywere except in the extremely old neighborhoods directly on the riverfront. I assume they must be overhead somewhere as the power goes out every time a butterfly wafts past the lines, but I don't know where that might be.
  22. Rather than relying on whatever happens to be in the milk, can you buy different cheese cultures to create different varieties and flavor profiles? What would happen if you added live yogurt cultures? Great, now I'm picturing a la-BOR-atory with crackling electricity and an assistant named Igor.
  23. Yeah, that's why I qualified the response with "If it's a new sound." If it's sounded this way SINCE NEW, it's probably just noisier than you're used to due to much higher speeds than older drives.
