  1. Well, we've been pretty darned successful for more than 200 years without it. Let's name all the countries that have retained their original socialist government for more than 200 years: ? Well, maybe NOBODY is "good" at socialism. I know what that means, do you?
  2. Nice overview of the "stimulus" package Pete. Not sure I agree with your assessment that the slide started that long ago, there was growth comparible to or better than the rest of the world's throughout those years. I still think the failure to reign in FM&FM and their subsequent collapse was the tipping point. Agreed that "loans" have a good enough record that trying them now is a fair thing to do. Not sure that putting a few dollars in consumer's hands will have enough effect on the economy to even notice. Now, if you put the ENTIRE SUM of the package directly into business and consum
  3. Well, let me start with a related story. Local governments are always on the lookout for more tax income. New homes? They get a piece of that. New industry? Piece of it. New commercial properties? Piece of it. New banks? Next to nothing. Having a bank close by is a good thing for the people who need one, and for other reasons, but increasing local revenue isn't one of those reasons. Many local governments put a limit on the number of banks allowed within their territory just for this reason: It's a net drain on the local economy. Government jobs are like that. They provide jobs for those who
  4. Recently watched "My Best Friend's Girl" with Dane Cook and, not surprisingly, The Cars' "My Best Friend's Girl" was a featured song, so, feeling a bit nostalgic for The Good Old Days, I'm listening to: The Cars, Greatest Hits
  5. With more socialist-style medical care, extended and higher unemployment benefits, tax refunds even if he doesn't pay taxes, well, the list goes on and on, why would he need other plans? Unless you mean his "other plans" might include buying a new house with more government-mandated "creative" loans or getting himself one of the millions of new government jobs just mandated.
  6. Well, if you've NEVER used it, you shouldn't hesitate. I wasn't using it because when I did try it (a while ago) it just plain did not work well. Now it works as well as the computer app, and I don't have to open the computer app and wait for e-mail to download. As soon as the web-based site opens (as quickly as any other web page) there's my mail. There are some navigation issues to learn (for example, the "next" button is a tiny link on the web page, whereas in the computer app it's a huge ol' button that's easy to hit). I'm not sure I like having my "sent" mail saved "on the web" rather th
  7. For e-mail they've always had the option of accessing it online (and thus available anywhere there's a computer with Internet access), but it was awkward and, I dunno, clunky. In fact, I hated it. But either it's changed, or I have. Regarding the load of reply e-mails, it's only for the threads I'm in, that I want to follow, and there's an option to turn that off, but it's not smart enough to send you ONE e-mail if, say ten people reply: You get ten e-mails for that one thread. And I'm in, like five. There are dozens of threads and I'd have trouble remembering and finding the one's I'm in wi
  8. I used to be the geekiest of geeks, but now the public's general knowledge equals or surpasses my own, at least the people I deal with. I don't deal with anyone on a regular basis that doesn't have a pretty good grasp of technology (though I remember what that was like).
  9. Should be a separate thread but: I'm against allowing the government to kill its citizens. Not sure there's any reason to go into a discussion since it's all been hashed and rehashed endlessly.
  10. My ISP supplies an e-mail app and I've been SO used to using it (For what, like, ten years?) I almost NEVER accessed my e-mail via the web. Whenver I tried it it seemed clunky. I started posting at a Netflix community "ning" site that sends e-mail every time someone replies to a thread you've posted in and, boy, those e-mails sure can pile up. Since downloading each e-mail takes time, the computer app would take, like, forever to d/l all my e-mail, so I started using the web-based e-mail client. You know what? Why oh WHY did I avoid using that before? An old dog CAN learn new tricks.
  11. Looks like that poor little dog is "stuck" and the big dog's dragging him around!
  12. I read (from an unverified source) that the financial companies originally bailed out (and without stipulations) were the companies that are responsible for politician's retirement funds. "Oh crap! There goes our sweet-sweet retirement funds! Quick! Throw money at them!" If true, IMO the reason those financial companies didn't "spend" the money efficiently was they thought of that money as sort of a quid pro quo; take care of the politician's retirement funds and you get tons o' money to spend however you like, we both win! Hmm, could that be because for nearly eight years the Democrats wer
  13. Speaking of tuna ... I always buy the "house brand" as it's "close enough" in quality and significantly cheaper. So I'm at a friend's house who'd just finished shopping and I see a can, umm, it's tuna, a familiar brand name, but something's not right. Wow! That can's tiny. When did they do that? Gosh, I hope they don't do that to house brands soon.
  14. Even a stopped clock is correct twice a day. Good one!
  15. You should go directly to the Adobe site to update to the absolutely latest version (manually; either type it in yourself or use a known good bookmark you already have, not by using a link on a random web page) as there are exploits that "trick" you into an update that actually leads to malware. That may be why updates were blocked in the first place.
  16. Holy cow! In Dallas? I wonder what Dallas was like in 1899 ... Re: Global Warming. Shhh! Don't let Marty hear you. Australia's drier than it's been in a Century, and, though the drought a hundred years ago couldn't have been caused by global warming, THIS TIME, it is. Update on my weather: The weather-folk were exactly right. An inch of snow, no more.
  17. Funny stuff there Pete. When Democrats held things up for the last eight years they were being responsible, now that Republicans are hesitant to turn this great nation into a socialist paradise, they're obstructionist. Oh well, that's politics! Gotta love the two-party system. You make some good points otherwise though. Legislation has become so cumbersome few legislators really have any idea what it is they're passing. One reason so much crap gets through. OK, that's one point, can't find any others. So it seems you believe this spending bill will be a positive thing? I don't

    Dog Hero

Guess the vid's a few months old but someone JUST sent it to me. A dog gets hit on a busy highway, another dog risks its life to drag the injured dog to safety. Say what?
  19. REALLY?!? I imagine there are people naive enough to believe that particular advertise... review but man, it's SO OBVIOUS.
  20. I'm not sure WHAT we're gonna get. The weather-folk say, "Eh, an inch or two of snow, no biggee." Then I look at the radar, and it looks like a disaster in the making. I realize they can set the parameters for what's shown on the radar but ... It looks like a big one to me, it looks like the center will pass right over me, AND it looks like it's one of those ones where the length of the storm leaves it overhead for a long time. Should I trust the weather-folk?
  21. Yeah, with all the storms movin' throughout the country, it doesn't bode well. In addition to what Liz said, hey, since YOU bought the generator, YOU get to take credit for the Karma that is going to keep your power on from now on. Everybody around you thanks you for your generosity. I wonder if they're doing all that work because they EXPECT some serious weather this year? Or just catchin' up? Or maybe they got their stimulus package early? That's like the "car wash" rule, isn't it? Get your car washed if you want rain? Buy a generator if you want the power to stop going out! And

SOMEONE doesn't remember being young and in love ... with their car.

The only item that struck a chord with me was the Recaro seats: The Mustang had 'em and they were PERFECT. In the years since OEM seats have become just as good, if not as good looking. Play the lotto much?

OK, list everything you'd love to do for this car, cost-no-object. If money weren't an issue for me I WOULD have modified the Jeep, but only because I had it so long. I ordered it from the factory nearly bare-bones as a Winter commuter (I still had the Mustang at the time), but once it became my only vehicle it would've been cool to modify it. Man it up a little. At the very least a brush bar, the (plastic) grille took a lot of abuse off-road.
  25. Nice touch Marty, reminding us of "Free Speech." I haven't really noticed anyone trying to suppress anyone's comments, but I certainly understand if someone might not want to continue a debate of their own accord. Remember everybody, every single member has forum topics that they have no interest in whatsoever. There are several that I'll never open. Does that mean they should be eliminated? Duh, no.
