  1. My dillema is that I was stuck with the GRUB bootloader even after I deleted UBUNTU from my hard drive last time (it wouldn't run, it turned the screen into static) and ran fixMBR (which F'ed up my Windows boot record so I had to repair windows. Can somebody recommend a GOOD bootloader that can easily be removed in the event of catastrophe. So, I will install Linux to a spare partition - a 15GB FAT32 - let me know which distro has a good bootloader that won't horribly screw up my windows stuff!
  2. Okay, school's ending which means I have a little free time (outside of three jobs, practice, and such) and I'm going to mess around with Linux. Just a Live CD for now - no immediate plans on installing to my hard drive for permament use. So, which distro would be easy enough to pick up and run with, while still being highly functional. I have a AMD X2 processor setup (if that makes any difference on hardware setups)
  3. You could use it as leverage (specially Office) to raise the price up - but it would be illegal.
  4. Here's my logic: 2003 Dell Dimension 4600 - should definitly take off a little for selling the guy a Dell! Pentium 4 2.8GHz - $60 757MB RAM - $50 64MB GeForce4 MX Graphics Card with TV-Out - $50 250GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) (WD Caviar) - $75 15 Ultrasharp FP Monitor - $100 48x/24x/48x CR-RW Drive - $10 48X Max Variable CD-Rom Drive - $5 3.5 Floppy - Nothing Intel Pro PCI NIC Card - Nothing Keyboard, speakers, mouse, etc - Depends on quality, brand, ect. Ouch, I was way off on my initial count. That brings it close to $400 with everything.
  5. It could be the load that each program uses - maybe some use more bandwith? (I think that's the word) I hardly ever have trouble playing games wirelessly (I play COD 2 and BF2 online) My wireless signal is generally low (2 bars, getting as high as 4 bars under some occassions) I don't own an expensive gaming router or anything, just a Linksys WRT54G, and a cheapo wireless card for my PC. Maybe I'm just lucky!
  6. Just an expansion from personal experiences 1 - this tastes allright 2 - keep them coming 3 - karaoke? I can do that! 4 - psh - I'm a good dancer too 5 - this goes down like water! 6 - where'd all the ugly girls go? 7 - I think I'm going to make some phone calls 8 - seriously where are the ugly girls? 9 - shot of tequilla for everyone - on me! 10 - seriously man - hit me in the face, I can't feel it! 11 - I'm going to beat the h*ll out of you! 12 - I swear I couldn't feel that dude hit me in the face! 13 - i didn't know they had strobe lights in here 14 - don't be a girl, drink some more! 15
  7. We're playing this game at school called Juggernaut. Basically, it's an assassin like game where people pay 2 dollars to join and a 3rd party draws names randomly that each person must "assassinate" by hitting with a squirt gun. The names are delivered in envelopes to keep them confidential - but word gets around fast. Also, a big rule, you CAN'T get people at school - only outside of school (such as their home, work, the mall, ect.) The winner gets $100 (from the pool of money) School year is ending and I have free time - so I created a page (from $10 of the pool money!) on Frontpage. Just ha
  8. course ... I would recommend just reloading Windows in general since you don't know what crap (i.e. spyware or worse AOL) has been on there!
  9. no intrusion.. your welcome anytime.. now that we know more about you , we know how to take any comments. The Linux section discusses porn! Screw Windows, I'm downloading a Knoppix ISO as I type!
  10. You can also change who the PC is registered to with a real easy search and replace (not bad even if you've never messed with the registry). Search for owner and replace w/ your name You should have to do it about 10 times and it'll be set
  11. I had Triton and after I reloaded my PC - I installed an old AIM. Triton sucks, you can't edit your icons without paying AOL, AND IT LOADS POS AOL EXPLORER ON YOUR PC!
  12. I believe he just wants a network that is good enough so his neighbors can't mooch off of it. When you have a wireless device installed on your computer it should allow your PC to detect wireless networks. To connect, you just have to select your network name (and enter you key, if you enabled WEP security) It's not too complicated
  13. It is a great tool :-) It is usually the easiest way to see if the problem is software or hardware related. I could not imagine not using my linux cd for diagnosing problems. Lol, I've used it twice in a year! I'm just used to doing things the hardware way since that's the way I learned. BTW, what live Linux CD would you recommend I get?
  14. Basically the options of basic security are WEP and MAC filtering. WEP filtering is assigning certain key codes to access your network - therefore, you log onto the network by each computer by using the key code (such as KSD3893SDF - a bunch of digits) MAC Address filtering is setting up where only certain MAC addresses can access the broudcasted signal. Each wireless component, such as your wireless card on your PC or your laptops built in wifi card. You set you router to only allow the certain addresses. Hope this helps you get started!
  15. You're always trying to get everyone to try the live linux! First off - What were your original problems with your computer (why did you assume it was the PSU)?
  16. Switch up to the computer biz - believe today I re-disassemblying a laptop, removing its mobo, and changing out the power connector
  17. Fun isn't it - this is about 25% of the work I do everyday! Now I know why my boss hired me BTW - you're really dominated this thread!

  19. talk to your boss, and then send them my way. I would love to see what some other people use. I would not expect him to say yes, but I thought I would ask :-) I'm forseeing a negative (nothing personal though). It's pretty much (forgive the crude drawings): LOGO LOGO Customer Info (Name, phone's, machine type) LOGO LOGO "" LOGO LOGO "" Passwords: Problems: Disclaimer area "" "" "" "" "" _____________(signature spot) Repair Details Finished on __/__/__ Fixed by _________ Parts ______ Quantity Cost ______ "" ""
  20. Generally google and driverguide.com will do the trick. You can search for the ATI chipset on driverguide and find what is needed (it just takes a quick sign up)
  21. I definately need to do that. I HATE writing, so I need to find something I can copy. We've got forms for customer info, passwords to log on the PC, and repair problems - then they sign the disclaimer (which also talks about PC's left on hand for more than 8 weeks). Also, we stamp all the sheets with a number so that we know which computer to work on first
