  1. What I also wanted to know is what type of functions can you run with Linux? I am once again under the assumption that you install both (in my case) XP and Linux and just select either one for startup on the BIOS boot screen, but what types of things will Linux do?
  2. Hello, I am a current Windows XP user and I was just curious what the benefits of Linux are. All I know as of know (or I think I know) is that Linux is free, but what else makes it good?
  3. I am sure there are a crap load of idiots on eBay who sell there used PC with all sorts of personal information on it - can you ask for identity theft?
  4. I wish I had $4000 to work with, that's about a half a year of college on a gaming rig
  5. as far as SP2 - just right click on My Computer and it will say something like this (of course version and edition might be different for yours) System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2
  6. coulda used this while ago to help out a buddy
  7. The repair should take care of your problems and still keep all of your information on the drive. Just make sure you overwrite the previous OS instead of deleted the entire partition
  8. Did you buy your computer from a Dell, or Gateway, or ect.? They put the drives in (as far as I have seen) as Cable Select. Make sure the The Master is MASTER and the Slave is SLAVE. If one is MASTER and the other is CABLE SELECT it won't work right
  9. $4000!!! Wow, here's just some of the priciest stuff I can come up with. It's sad to think that about six years ago my parents paid Gateway $3000 for the crappy system I'm on now! Abit Fatal1ty MOBO AMD Dual Core 4 GB OCZ Platinum RAM 2 WD Raptor HDD on Raid 0 Two expensive graphics cards on SLI and I don't know where to go from here. Attack of the Show did an "Ultimate Gaming Machine" where they spent around $6000, but that included peripheals like a huge widescreen monitor for about $1000
  10. I'd wait it out or skip it entirely. like they always say "if it ain't broke don't fix it"
  11. If you ever need to burn a disc for a system backup, it's a lot easier doing so at 4.7gig a disc than 700 meg with a CD, besides, what is the price difference between DVD Rom and Burner?
  12. Component Wattage Required Motherboard 15-30 Low-end CPU 20-50 Midrange to high-end CPU 40-100 RAM RAM 7 per 128MB PCI add-in card 5 Low to midrange graphics board 20-60 High-End graphics board 60-100 IDE hard drive 10-30 Optical drives 10-25 This might be a little old but it is decent enough for reference If in doubt, I would just go with the 500W
  13. How many watts is it? And like one of the above comments, I would definitly go with a DVD Burner combo - they are only about 40 bucks now on Newegg <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Update - just saw that you meant 450 w, there is an article on tigerdirect.com about figuring out what wattage is needed, let me see if i can dig it up

  15. The 64 in comparison to the XP is like (not according to speed but progression) like The Pentium 3 and Pentium 4. It's a newer "line" (I'm not sure if that's the right word) of chips just like dual core AMD's are newer than the 64
  16. Yeah, just get a PSU that supports your 20/24 pin and/or P4 connector needs
  17. 2 of these = $300, then $100 or so for a motherboard, and let's say $150 for a power supply. That's the "entry level" at $550. But that's assuming you don't already have any of these things. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Assuming that I was already going to spend $100 on the board, two cards on SLI for $300 would outperform a $300 video card by itself, then it'll just be a little extra on the PSU
  18. Yeah, 4th of July 2004 fireworks didn't only take place outside. Lightning hit a tree behind my house and fryed everything on that side - PS2, Direct TV boxes, AC Unit, DVD Player, Phones, PHONE LINE!!!, but thankfully not the computer. It was a lonely week without the PS2, TV, DVD Player, and Internet, the phone line was burned up so I could only play some hardcore solitare on the computer! Put everything on a surge protector, the computer was turned off and in a surge protector and it was fine. Thankfully insurance covered everything past the first $500 in damages, including the printer t
  19. Thanks alot, I was trying to figure out how they plugged in, and that was what I figured. When I first heard of SLI i was like, why would I want 2 monitors with the same thing on it - durr.
  20. Sorry for the "stupid n00b post" I am new to this forum since G4TV Closed their Tech Support forum today. As far as my question goes: When hooking up an SLI system I know that you need a SLI Compatible motherboard and two SLI Video Cards, but how do you physically hook up the two cards to the monitor? In other words, you install the two cards... then what?
