  1. This is an old method of loading trojans. Basically if it is in the fonts folder, windows loads / runs it when it boots kind of like if it was in start menu starup folder ; but most people never think of this as a path. My font folder is about 35MB by the way.
  2. http://reviews.ebay.com/Myth-Low-Density-v...000000001236178 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR_SDRAM Basically Low Density modules should be compatible with all motherboards; but only SOME motherboads will support high density modules. Unless your board specifies that it will support high density RAM do not spend the money. Secondly , High density RAM is slower than LOW density so why would you buy RAM which is slow??? (See the next line for why they are slower) High Density RAM devices were designed to be used in registered memory modules for servers. You should not mix registered and unregis
  3. What did you do that seems to have solved it? If you go and right click on my computer and choose manage, go to event viewer, system logs Are there any red events associated with the problem? If so , what do they say? As before, check your voltages with SIW or similar. See if they or the speeds vary or change from day to day , hour to hour . (IE, get a notebook and start keeping some records so if it happens again you have a starting point for troubleshooting the problem).
  4. Yep. My recommendation is if your computer has this sort of troubleshooting feature it is well worth locating the correct guide ahead of time and printing it out to keep in your "important papers" folder (with the reciepts, license and product keys , install cds etc). In the old days, I just would write this info on the inside of the case with a sharpie (still a good idea) but these days I like taking a binder notebook with cd inserts and those plastic page protector inserts so you have it when you need it.
  5. They have been giving dire warnings of an ice storm here since yesterday afternoon. It was cold and rainy yesterday (only occasionally heavy) and is still drizzling; but as of now the temp is still 33. They still insist temperatures are on the way down and that there will be freezing rain and icing on bridges. They closed the highest ramps on the "High Five" intersection of two major freeways (the HOV lane ramp) but still no ice yet;just so miserable even the dogs prefer to stay in and sleep. Local news station claims it is 31, but I show 33; temps are lower to north and west. Probably use t
  6. Have you installed the drivers for your printer on the affected machine?
  7. Always useful to have is the guide to understanding your Dell LED error display http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/syst.../ug/tools00.htm http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/syst...rear_panel_leds http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/syst...m#frontpanelled Cover the three most common ones This seems to apply http://support.dell.com/support/topics/glo...mp;toggle=false
  8. Also consider that it could be a power issue, if the power supply is outputting a higher voltage than it should (cheap solid state power supply failing and allowing more voltage to leak through).
  9. Most common cause for explorer.exe to crash like this is malware; so post a hijackthis log on the malware board and ask for help. Secondly if it only happens when you open specific folders is that there is too much unorganized data in that folder; like you have a folder full of pictures or videos and you open it an windows tries to load them all into memory at once to generate previews and icons etc and this crashes explorer (explorer.exe is the graphic user interface; the application which gives you a desktop and lets you see what is in folders ). If this is the case, use a third party file m

  11. I second that opinion. I cannot recall how many times I have seen a good install ruined by someone cleaning the registry. They only should be used if you have a problem and know what it is; then they make the searching a bit easier.
  12. One mistake a lot of folks make is taking the drive out of the freezer bag. This allows condensation if the air is not very very dry. I prefer to connect a (PATA OR SATA TO ) USB adapter and run the USB cable out of a tiny hole in the bag and seal that hole with duct tape and / or silicon sealant. In addition, you can pack a couple of those blue ice blocks used in your beer cooler in there too to keep the drive cool. The idea here is that if the problem is caused by a worn bearing , or loosening tolerances; that cold shrinks the metal and tightens tolerances and thickens lubricants . This ca
  13. It sounds to me like something was in the process of installing / updating and either the windows installer was in use (you should have gotten a warning about that) or it has finished and locked the registry and drive until you rebooted for the changes to take effect. Normally I prefer to do one item at a time and reboot between.
  14. SuperAntispyware is a legitimate and highly effective and recommended protection. http://www.superantispyware.com/precreateticket.html How do I uninstall? You may uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware by going to the Windows Control Panel and selecting Add/Remove Programs and then locating the product, either ""SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition", or "SUPERAntiSpyware Professional" in the list and clicking the Add/Remove button. If you do not see SUPERAntiSpyware listed or have problems uninstalling, download and run the SUPERAntiSpyware Uninstaller Assistant using the link below: Click here to download the S
  15. Sounds like you had a nasty which replaced a critical windows file with an infected copy. Unfortunately you tried automated removal rather than having an expert help you. It deleted the infected file; you should have restored a copy before rebooting. Now follow the links sethook provided to restore it .
  16. Firewall Issue? I would try turning off the firewall and try it to see if that rectifies the problem.
  17. Ah that makes it easier. If he has been logging in through the web interface then probably any mail he wanted to save is saved on the server (like with gmail). Just find the POP and SMTP setup for that particular ISP email and set up the account in Outlook. I suggest making sure "save a copy on the server" is selected so it does not delete all his mail from the server. http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer....mp;answer=13273 Is a guide for doing it with gmail. http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=75291
  18. Don't get by here that often ; but good to see everyone here.
  19. http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2008/2008PL-Nominations.php Has them all Currently the 2007 CD iso is the most recent but the 2008 one should be out soon http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2008/2008PL-CD-about.php
  20. I would start by tapping the F8 key once a second after the POST beep when you first power on until you get an enhanced startup menu. Choose safe mode. Does it boot to safe mode quickly but not normal mode? If so we can troubleshoot that by starting with a clean boot and enabling items one at a time. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 If the problem persists in safe mode; I would go with the suggestion of clearing your CMOS settings and reconfiguring your bios. Possibly the settings for the new RAM and old RAM are different and it got all bollixed up trying to change from one to the othe
  21. Nope, you have to set up the mail account manually. It will not import the old emails; they are in a different format. So unless he has his email set to keep a copy on the server , he will not have access to them in Outlook. My recommendation is to set up a gmail account and enable pop access and configure outlook to check it, and set the original email account to forward a copy to gmail (or gmail to fetch a copy from the other account).
  22. I agree with the Linux suggestion. Although it is learning a new OS ; well so would XP. There are some small non demanding yet up to date linux distros which would have no major issues with running on a machine that old. Of course then you run into the software issue again. Most Linux it is hard for the average user to install software and it is harder to find software .
  23. Happy birthday antonio. Good to see you still stop by here and G4 once in a while.
  24. Ah, so sorry. I do not know the currency exchange over there so have no idea how these prices compare But it looks like about 10 rand to a dollar. So 5-6000R is not bad right? http://www.comx-computers.co.za/computer-s...?products=20143 http://www.comx-computers.co.za/show-laptops-by-price.php Hmm laptops starting at R 2349 not bad if that is the same as $234.90 although the acer aspire for R 4522 is better than an eepc which is probably running linux. http://www.comx-computers.co.za/ http://www.shoptoday.co.za/ http://www.wantitall.co.za/ http://www.notebook.co.za/ Acer aspire one is R3725
