by the wayit looks you have a corrupted file on your os, i would suggest re-installing xp then try the updates again. only this time get sp2 right after you get sp1 done. see if htat helps. don't restart you computer until you have finished downloading sp2.

I have sp2 and it hasn't killed my IE, my wife uses it all the time as does my son. I even use it from time to time. I don't know how old your info is cgm, but that is totaly incorrect. i have never heard of IE being killed except while it was in the beta mode when people were getting it with the unfixed bugs at the beginning.

after the original release of sp2 Windows stopped doing anything more then the routine High Priority updates of SP!. I found a program one time, looking for it again now, that actually told you what SP you had. When I did my last check before downloading sp2 I found that 15% of SP2 had already been put on my computer. I know that Charter pipeline always runs into problems with ZA because they want you to buy their physical firewall that they offer. rather then using a software version. it has something to do with the way their servers are programmed that causes that. I use the gimp myself, but have yet to figure out how to make avatars and animations with it. the online tutorials I have found are somewhat useful, but yet on the other hand have a tendency to get technical. of course if could be me. I'm a computer geek, but on certain things I can be a computer idiot. Any help would be grateful. I really want to make a new avatar and actually feel like I made it.

how can you make a custom data base that is easy to work with for customers where there is a lot of info to put dealing with constant repairs? I ask this because I am helping my father set up a data base for the repair shop he works at. He wants to be able to set up a single page for each customers repair orders without having to make a new card after about 50 lines.

StealthG, There is a possibility that your lenses in the cd drive are out of alignment. short of having it takent o a shop and serviced, which could take a few weeks, i would recommend replacing the drive. All it takes is a little bumb by something and the lenses will go out of alignment, and it won't read or write properly. If you have another computer put it in that one and see if it works, if not then you need to replace the drive itself.

opening it manually should only be used in emergencies, have you tried to reboot your computer or disconnect and reconnect the power cable for it? if you have you might just have to go out and get a new one. those things don't last forever. I have had my computer for 2 years now, and I have to replace my regular cd-rom already because it won't read or work all the time. Unfortunately it could be something on your motherboard too.
