  1. He's cleaned it up a bit over his old setup.
  2. Same here. I think you have to install it if your want Windows Defender or IE7.
  3. When you go to install the updates I believe the WGA isn't removable from the list. I haven't tried it yet. I wait to install updates after I don't see threads that state the freaking updates messed me up. Maybe I'll try it. The most it can do is place an annoying image on my PC until I remove it. I wonder if it can tell this isn't the dead Gateway that got trashed. hahahahaha
  4. I would start checking your hardware and drivers. Try removing a piece of hardware (sound card, Ethernet adapeter & etc.) then seeing if the interrrupt goes away. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interrupt_storm
  5. Here's a site to go with it. EventID http://www.eventid.net/search.asp
  6. I am having the same problem and after I click on OK or cancel the computer runs very slow. I'm also having problems opening some programs like outlook. Are you getting the exact same error and are you running WinXP? Are you using a HP computer, printer or etc.? When did the problem start?
  7. iccaros is correct. You need to understand iptables. YoLinux: Using Linux iptables or ipchains to set up an internet gateway / firewall / router for home or office Devil-Linux 1.0: Firewall/Router Distro
  8. One confirmation at G$ that the new WGA catches you. Thay ended up purchasing a legit copy.
  9. Here's a few links to creating a Linux router using GNU Zebra. Use Zebra to set up a Linux BGP/OSPF router Those that understand Linux (not me) would know much more, but this should give you an idea.
  10. I have found that the last free version of Sygate is fine. It works very well and didn't need updating.
  11. I have to agree that some people will move to another OS if MS keeps it's prices up, continually releases bad updates and continues acting like big brother. I believe the many PC users who just use their computer to surf the web and email would be good candidates to switch to 'nix. I see many distros out now that takes little setup knowledge required by the user. The hardest part will be getting schools and businesses to engage in the cross platform usage. I detest that many schools require the use of Windows to do your work.
  12. They downgraded us to frost warnings. I wish the rain would stop. My grass is getting a good jump on me.
  13. Exactly. Rumor has it that the WGA update after this one may detect multiple uses of the same key and disable those PCs that were somehow illegally activated after the first install using the key. Time for people to buy legit copies.
  14. I charge extra for HP/Compaq because of their crappy driver support. I have gotten to the point when I do locate the drivers for a customers HP/Compaq I burn them to a CD and save it to my collection. As for modems, sound cards and graphics I usually update those drivers to a stable version. I also install the latest Adobe Reader, Java, WinZip and etc. which I have on disk. This adds a nice touch to a fresh installation for the customer. If they are into image editing I also include the latest IrfanView with plug-ins. I will also set them up with the AV/firewall of their choice (Avast/Sygate i
  15. His price range is from $600-1200. You're not going to get Alienware for that. The Dell XPS M140 comes with Media Center which fits his requirement for watching movies and listening to music plus gaming. Plus it used a Pentium M which should give him decent battery life.
  16. XP OEM is locked to the motherboard, retail isn't. I have heard the newest Windows Genuine Validation (WGA) is going to be much stricter on new installs and reinstalls. It might also detect if the same XP key is used on multiple PCs and may disable all those illegally activated after the original. Yes to reinstall and re-activation of XP after motherboard change unless it is the exact same motherboard.
  17. I believe you are severely limited to the processor you can use. If you can find a slotket and 600MHz Pentium III and install the full 256MB of memory you should be able to run WinXP Home SP2, but it may be slow. I think you would be better to do a fresh install of Win98SE with all of the updates just before June 30th and use an imaging program so you could reload 98 once errors started. You also would be better off picking up a newer used PC that will handle WinXP. It isn't just the processor and memory that may be an issue. The video setup could also hinder an XP install on that Dell. http:/
  18. What is your motherboard make amd model or the brand and model of your PC if it's an OEM? For just normal surfing the web with no network setup WinXP Home retail works great. That is what I upgraded to.
  19. What is it mainly going to be used for?
