  1. Check your Bios setings to see if the hard drive is correctly reconized (Autodetect & LBA). Did you run fixboot or fixboot C:? Have you tried chkdsk c: /f /r to see if there are any errors? What does your Boot.ini look like?
  2. The only thing I can think of is the password was setup incorrectly or typed wrong.
  3. Look to see if Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer KB896688 was installed. This update has caused problems. I uninstalled it from my Win98SE setup because I couldn't use any programs that required ActiveX such as Panda Active Scan and programs that required ActiveX to download such as Flash.
  4. I expect to see some cookies left behind from surfing the net. I have stopped being overly concerned with them possibly "seeing" where I go. If those cookies are interested in all the tech sites I go to, so be it. Before I visit a site that needs me to login with secure data I make sure to clean my computer of any intrusive crap. My anti-virus recognizes most malicious cookies. When I am done for the day I just completely delete the contents of my Temporary Internet Files, History and Cookies folders. I check my Temp folder for entries that I do not want. There are a couple of items in the Tem
  5. Oo-ooooo -- don't get me started on "user fees." Money that goes from my pocket to the government or government mandates are taxes and should be called what they are. There's been a lot of talk about how much we spend on education but I don't believe they include all the fees students have to pay (books, equipment, lab fees, etc.). Over 60% of my property taxes goes to education yet you still have to pay more and more and more when the kids go to school. ... ahh, what's the use. As long as education is a government-run monopoly it'll be as efficient as any other government entity. No
  6. It's really strange that NY is mostly comprised of Democrats who are always accused fo being the taxing party but NY has been under Republican control for many years. The Republicans sneak in user fees hoping the people don't consider them a tax, but we know better. Businesses leave NY in droves because of the high taxation, outrageous insurance costs and expensive utilties.
  7. You can build your own electric car for running about town or short round trips. The charging system doesn't use a lot of electricity so the cost is low. The biggest problem is with steep upgrades. There's a guy near me who built one for going to his job in Syracuse (42 mile round trip). He has figured that it costs him less than a couple bucks a day. He built his EV with used parts for around $3000 (car included). Electric Auto Association Electric Vehicles USA Build your own EV Adavnced DC Motors
  8. My power bill in the winter runs about $180.00,sorryTT75 but at $65 amonth your gettin off dirt cheap IMHO. As for parking here where I live I could park a Abrams and no one would look twice. Non of the Sr/Jr schools in this district charge for parking.
  9. Wow, I employed some of those workers. Some of my bartenders were one shot short of a jigger.
  10. No parking fee for high school here. Less than 400 kids with a license. Probably only 200 that can afford a car. The strip between the sidewalk and curb must be mowed and raked by the homeowner but the trees are maintained by the city. No parking allowed on this space. We have the second highest utility bills in the nation. My electric bill is $65 per month (budget). What makes me mad is that we have plenty of natural gas here in NY but most of it is purchased from Canada. The environmentalists don't want us drilling for the gas. The utility company charges us a high fee for the transmission o
  11. Not only that, but the shipping and other fees would be fairly high.
  12. I wish I still had my place in the country. As it stands now I pay $25 for water, $35 garbage pickup and $100 sewer usage every 3 months. My house in the country had a concrete 1500 gallon septic system which was pumped out every 2 years at a cost of $50. I had 2 excellent dug wells that never ran dry (no fluoride added). I paid $30 a year for dump fees (dump was 4 miles down the road). I was able to have a wood stove which reduced my heating bill (fuel oil cost about $300 for the whole winter). My hot water and cook stove ran on propane which cost me about $45 a month. My boiler, hot water a

  14. Never assume that Yahoo is safe. They have been in bed with Claria/Gator/GAIN.
  15. Ghost is similar to other imaging programs such as Acronis True image. Microsoft doesn't complain about the installs of 9x/ME or 2K. They don't even know that it is installed. Also they are no longer going to support 9x or ME. I only know four people besides my self that use 98 and two of them are family. I own three legal copies of 98SE which are installed on my family's computers that I built.
  16. Time for someone that understands that processor and games to look at this. Try a new thread dealing with the processor issue and refer to this thread within the new one.
  17. thats a cool idea. what do you use to transfere the images back to the new computer? One other thought, you will not have the correct coa on the new computer. I like Acronis True Image. With an image you don't need to worry about the key. 9x/ME/2K isn't like XP where it checks the hardware so reinserting the key or activating isn't an issue.
  18. I'm creating custom installs of 98SE on a couple of 2GB Seagate hard drives that I bought new quite a few years ago and never used. I will update them and then use them for image backups. I won't install the motherboard drivers and remove the video and ethernet drivers, that way I can just install the images on any PC.
  19. When I was twelve my old man told me that before I bought my first car I would need to know how to fix it. It was up to my uncles to teach me how to repair motor vehicles. When I turned sixteen and obtained my license the old man brought me around to different used car dealers and pointed out which cars he thought would be the best option. I worked part time for my old man (steeple jack), the high school I attended (custodian) and for the city (lifeguard). With the money saved from those jobs I bought a '66 Chevy Caprice with a 283 and automatic. I had to pay for the registration, insurance an
  20. What would you expect from AOL? They have always snuck crap on your systems since they started. Amn y big websites such as Ford Motor Company contain ads that use this crapware to display them. Big business can't be bothered to research the spyware used for their ads as long as it brings in the bucks.
  21. Hijack This does show it. We have known about this for a long time. CastleCops calls it foistware and has a warning. http://castlecops.com/s4102-ViewMgr.html
  22. From what I understand no updates will be available once support is done. It is supposed to be the same deal as when 95 support ended. You may find the updates at MS archives which is well hidden.
  23. Just make sure you download the separate updates and burn them to a disk. Include IE6 SP1, DirectX 9.0c and WMP 9 and their updates.
