Wow. That's terrible! Glad to hear that the sickos didn't endanger your job. I'm also really paranoid about running a server. About two years ago I was running a really old version of Linux, Caldera 2.3, on a P166. I had Apache installed and it was serving up a personal web page out of my house. I also got hacked, he locked me out of my unit, I couldn't log-on as root to remove him. I had to re-format my HD and then I promptly put my box behind a firewall. I only use my ISP now to host pages. I'll look around for a cheap ftp hosting site. What would be cheap for you?

Thanks for the heads up. I'll update my eMac at work. Interesting to note that downloading that combined security fix caused my eMac to lock up and freeze. I was downloading the fix and left the room, eventually the power saver came on and shut down the monitor. At that point the computer froze, I couldn't get it to work. I had to do a hard re-boot and unplug the computer from the wall. It started up fine, but that was kind of weird.

Hi Shadow_Thomas, I quit smoking 22 years ago. My wife started taunting me and said I was too weak to quit. Well, that made me very angry so I quit just to prove her wrong. My wife is a very smart woman, she knows that I'm pig-headed. I wish you the very best of luck in quitting, man! I was a social smoker. I liked to smoke at parties, gatherings. If you're really hooked maybe using the nicotine patch might help get you over the cravings so you can quit. Hang in there hitest

Hi, DSL Reports Here's a good web site that may give you some insights into broadband. The site also has reviews of different broadband ISPs. There are two types you can get DSL and Cable broadband. Both have their advantages and dis-advantages. I use DSL and like it a lot. What ever type of broadband you get it will be a lot faster than what you have with dial-up. I would go for it. I could never go back to dial-up.

Whoops, I'd forgotten about KDE. You're right, I do recall it seeming lighter than GNOME. All things considered, that's pretty weird. Time to fiddle with .xinitrc again. Yes, on my box KDE is markedly faster than Gnome. I like Gnome and it seems that the newer version of Gnome 2.6 in my distro is more stable than what was on my Red Hat 9 box. If and when I get a new PC with more system resources then I'd run Gnome for a bit. I've run IceWM (it is faster than KDE), but, I guess I like eye candy. KDE 3.2 for me right now.

That's another reason why I mostly use KDE. My computer is old and KDE uses less RAM than Gnome.

Well said. I've got several PCs, but, they're used units that I've picked up for a song. I've been really lucky with buying refurbished PCs. I've got one site that I use quite a bit to buy used monitors and PCs. itxchange.com They sell a wide variety of used stuff. It's amazing what you can get for a few bucks. This used unit that I'm typing on started out as a Win 98SE machine. I then installed Red Hat 9 on it. Now I'm running Mandrake 10.1.

I post sporadically at other forums especially one that will remain unamed *cough G4 cough*. This place is my main digital hangout. I've got some good buddies at Leoville as well. This place grows on you. There are a lot of people here from the good old days. Another thing that I notice is that posters here are trying very hard to preserve what is good about this place. It is very rare to see blatant hostility here. Come on in and sit, have some java

Mandrake 10.1 Official Released
hitest replied to tictoc5150's topic in Linux & Unix Tips and Tricks
Thanks for the suggestions. Nope, I can't connect to any of the servers as of yet. My mandrake update software may be mis-configured or I could be just trying to connect when they're busy. Not too big a deal if I can't connect at all. I may re-install or wait until 10.1 official is released or the next point upgrade and install that. -
Very cool tictoc5150, I like the splash screen:-) I like the name iccaros linux, the mythical reference is classic.

I've tried on several occasions to contact my friend chinawht, but, I've received no replies from her. She's dropped off the face of the Earth. Does anyone know anything about her welfare? I'm worried about her. She stopped posting some time ago.

Hi tictoc5150, Were you able to connect to the Mandrake servers for free or did you sign up for a subscription? If you did sign up what service did you get?
