  1. The problem's on my end. My ISP routes everything through an opaque proxy server. Anything that tries to connect that what appears to be my IP address hits the proxy instead, and anything that tries to connect to my actual IP address is apparently dropped. As a result, neither active FTP nor BitTorrent work. As for passive FTP, it's hit-or-miss for reasons I don't understand. It worked on the Fedora mirror I'm using, but not on any of the Mandrake mirrors I've tried. That leaves me with HTTP for reliable transfers. Normally I prefer HTTP anyway, since it supports transparent compression a
  2. Neat. Mandrake's on my list for disk images. The only problem is that all the download sites I've found are FTP sites, and my FTP access is flaky. Right now I'm busy swearing at Red Hat for making Fedora so ginormous. 2.2GiB for the install ISOs?! How many distros do they have in there? Hi jcl, I've had pretty good luck downloading from the mirrors at mandrake.com, the university ftp site in germany was fast and stable when I downloaded 10.0.
  3. Man, that's weird:-) I'm part of the 98% crowd. That was pretty cool.
  4. Perfect. I was hoping I could get by with less than a GiB per system. Thanks. No problem. You're welcome, man

same here, not too long ago I almost uninstalled to just use windows, now it's swingin' the other way and am considering making my notebook mandrake exclusive. how often do you upgrade? ....everytime there's a .1 .2 .3?......lol Yeah, I really like Mandrake, it rocks. I just re-formatted my hard drive on Friday, re-installed Mandrake 10. I did something delightfully stupid, had to re-install. Sytem is woring better after a clean install. I've been to Mandrake.com and 10.1 looks like it has some interesting features. Yeah I like upgrading at each point upgrade, so I'll go for Mandrake 10
  6. Hi jcl, Here's some specs for installation on Fedora, * Custom Installation (Minimal): 620MB * Server: 1.1GB * Personal Desktop: 2.3GB * Workstation: 3.0GB * Custom Installation (Everything): 6.9GB
  7. Maybe you've got a windows or linux boot loader that's messing up your boot sector. You could try to use a win 98 boot floppy and boot from that. Remove all partitions with the floppy disk, then format c: After your hard drive is cleanly formatted maybe you'll be able to install. It may be a hardware issue, are all cables connected properly?
  8. Good to see you, uberpenguin:-) Thanks for stopping by man! Welcome to Besttechie.net

Sultan is the one who sent me here....I love this site and I have recommended it....I'm sure he's just been busy lately...He is awesome and been so much help!! Welcome to Besttechie.net! This is my favorite forum on the Internet. I've found all members here to be very civil, polite. This is a great place to hang out.
  11. Very true. It does make installing things too easy. The only time you learn anything in Linux is when you're forced to open up a terminal prompt.
  12. Yep, Red Hat 9 handled kernel installs through the package manager as well. I'm assuming then that Fedora will do the same.

I really like your idea, jcl of posting a HOWTO site for newcomers to Linux. This'll help out a lot. I'm still using Mandrake 10. Going to get 10.1 next month. I'm not as bored with Linux as I was a short time ago.
  14. Yep, you're not missing a thing. The TSS that I knew and loved is gone.

I had a short PM chat with K on another board. He said he's been laying low. He may return at some point.
  16. Sweet unit, Nerelda! I'm hoping to buy a new P4 unit at some point:-)

I'm taking another run at him right now. Nah, it was me I'm glad to hear that someone else had a run in with K. I'm going to go to G4 and invite him back. We got into a political debate, quite silly really. He's a good guy.

I'm taking another run at him right now. Nah, it was me All Right, You both did good. I see uberpenguin has just added his name to the list. Good Job!!! Sweet! I just saw that uberpenguin has signed up. We Unix/Linux users are very fortunate to now have both jcl and uberpenguin here. These two guys put up with my mundane n00b questions over two years ago when I was getting into *nix. These two dudes rule.

Unfortunately the first thing I did was get in an argument with K (stupid G4TTV instincts) and he seems to have since vanished, so we only broke even I've been thinking about nudging uberpenguin, but he made it pretty clear that he doesn't have the time. To be honest, I'm sort of afraid to advertise more widely and accidentally compromise the quality of these boards. As much as I'd like to see more traffic in the Linux boards (*hinthint*), I really don't want to see a lot of questions about PHLAK and endless "Why should I use Linux?" threads. Let alone the messes we sometimes had on the T

Me too Nerelda. I've trolled for members at other sites. We are very fortunate to have jcl here; I invited him to come over from G4. I've also got a link to Besttechie.net on my home page. Let's just spread the good word. Besttechie.net is a great digital home for us.
  21. I saw the same episode briefly yesterday........for about three minutes and quickly surfed to another channel. It's very easy to explain in my opinion. TSS has lost a lot of the content, quality that was present in the past. They're trying to fill the show with mindless @#*^ that'll appeal to a certain demographic. I'm not happy with the new format at all. TSS has lost a viewer. Me.
  22. Hey, you do have a choice. You can either install SP2, or stop using Windows Update ;-) what's sad is that M$ has always used tactics like this. especiall behind the sceens. all you guys are always welcome to my side of the computing world. Yep, that's why I mostly use Linux and Mac OS X. On a side note I upgraded my work computer to SP2 without too many glitches. The only weird thing I noticed was that windows no longer sees that I have an anti-virus program on my hard drive. Norton AV still works just fine I just run it manually.

On a side note I read at Mandrake's website that Mandrake 10.1 is due to be released in November. I think I'll try it when it's posted on the mirrors.
  24. Great Star Trek episode. I would have enjoyed that one
  25. I haven't received any weird PMs lately. But o boy do I ever get a truck load of weird e-mails. Today I received a very official looking e-mail from a bank that encouraged me to enter my credit card information, account numbers, etc. The bank wanted to verify my security status. The frightening thing is I'll bet some people get confused and actually do enter their private information at hacker sites. I always delete e-mails if I don't know the sender.
