  1. Eep......thanks for the tip. I thought I was safe running Linux.
  2. Hi, I just found this using google/linux. I'm not saying this'll work, but, it's better than re-installing. Possible fix
  3. Hi man, Yep, you can re-install that'll fix your issue, but then you'll lose all your stuff. If you do re-install just remember to jot down the root password. I haven't had a chance to google your issue yet. I know there's a way to some how change your pass word. I'll go look now.
  4. Hi Tymekyller, When you installed mandrake you would have been asked to create a root password. The root password is what will allow you to change your clock time and do a lot of other admin tasks. Did you write down this password? If you find the password you're in luck, that'll allow you to change your clock time. If you didn't write it down you're kind of hooped. I'll try and do a google search on how to change the root password for Mandrake. jcl, uberpenguin do you guys know a command line log-on trick to do this? I've read about it, just can't remember the command. thanks, hitest
  5. Hey tictoc5150, To answer your question Xorg is the replacement for xfree86 as the newer distros aren't using xfree any more. Well it took a few hours, got Mandrake 10.1 fully installed, up and running. The install proceeded normally, no surprises. Downloaded, installed Fire Fox 1.0, Thunderbird .8 ( I don't use kmail that often). Got sound up and running on the command line using the old sndconfig program. I had a weird moment when I lost my LAN connection through my router, but, opened up Mandrake control panel and started up my connection again (forgot to type in my domain name). I haven
  6. thanks hitest....all went well but found myself having to remember how to fix the driver / firmware issue for my WG511 again...was surprised how fast I got it fixed though...(and did most of it through command line...yeaaaaa for me!!!...lol)..guess my memory isn't as bad as I thought the review I read on 10.1 indicated that the guy had the same wireless card I have and it set up seemlessly on install....what I didn't take into account was that netgear in their infinite wisdom made the same card with a bunch of different chipsets ...oh well, isl3890 is easy enough to find. as for the overall i

    Confession

Okay if we're into confession mode. I like beer and chips, and junk food....................I also like bad TV shows, you know the really old, crappy 50s science fiction stuff, really cheesy stuff.
  8. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ST!! I hope you have a pleasant day, man

  10. Welcome to Besttechie.net, man I hope you like it here! The people are very nice, a lot of us are ex-G4 people and from other boards too. hitest
  11. I don't mind the four letter words, I ignore that stuff. But, a lot of the posters over there are mean spirited and cruel. Besttechie.net rules:-)
  12. HAPPY HALLOWEEN I just got home from taking my 10 year old daughter trick or treating. She had a good time and received a pretty good haul of candy. I hope your Halloween is a good one:-) hitest
  13. I drop into G4 from time to time then after I get beaten to a pulp I come home to besttechie.net.
  14. I've been using Fire Fox exclusively for quite some time now. I really like PR 1.0, excellent. Haven't had any pop-ups showing up I forget what they look like.
  15. Mandrake 10.0 on my system. Linux all the way baby
  16. Pfpfpfpf. Gah, that's old? 128MiB still seems huge to me. (Except when GNOME is running, of course :-/) Apparently not that valuable ;-) Never used Slack or FreeBSD 5, but there isn't much difference between BSD and Linux as far as networking goes. In fact, if Slack is still using the BSD init system, the difference may just be a matter of how you spell the lines in /etc/rc.conf. (On the other hand, Linux's network hardware management totally baffles me, but that probably won't make any difference.) Thanks, man! I'm probably going to go with Slackware 9.1 first. It has auto-detection o
  17. jcl, I know you're a Unix Lord from way back, I've got a line on a really old pc, it's got 64 MB RAM. Before when I tried to network BSD 5.2 through my router on another pc I couldn't get it to work for some reason. You offered me valuable assistance on my attempt. I have an old switch kicking around and I can rig it up so I can access one of my spare static IP addresses, and not use my router. Which would be easier to network to a static IP address, Slack 9.1 or BSD 5.2? I may be constrained by hardware issues and be forced to choose one or the other anyway. I'm thinking of giving this a
  18. hey hitest, was sure the official was gonna be a while and figured you probably have it before me but saw the press release and just had to have it...next thing I knew, I was signing up to be a mandrakesoft member....I generally don't like paying for things that can be had for free (legally) but I really like mandrake and in a moment of generousity felt like giving something back...$66 for a year, isn't too bad to have access to things not released in the free download, not to mention, sooner than the free d/l becomes available....felt like a worthy cause considering they just filed chapter 11

It uses the Mono wrapper for GtkMozEmbed for rendering pages. The rest of it is just a blob of Gtk#. I still can't believe I posted a screenshot of it in that condition. It was more attractive early on, when I was using context menus for everything. The current UI is the result of my trying to minimize the amount of code I'm maintaining while I work on other parts of the browser. I've already eliminated that stupid "-" button (close current tab, used before I had any per-tab controls), and the "+" button is next on my list. Anyway, back on topic, I am working on the HOWTO. Right now I'm f
  20. I'm using KDE 3.2 right now on my Mandrake 10.0 work station. I've also got Enlightenment and IceWM installed too. I like IceWM and Enlightenment for speed; they're a lot faster than KDE. My unit is snappier with minimalistic WMs. When I was running Red Hat 9 on this unit I also used Gnome and Black Box. Gnome and Black Box caused weird video monitor effects though. Strangely enough my favorite is still KDE. What do you like? hitest
  21. Thanks for the heads up! I'll be downloading it in the near future:-)

hmmm, just checked em' out....does look interesting...wish I would've bought a centrino, all this penny pinching is gonna give me arthritis...lol I do like the sound of... "10.1 Community is the first Linux operating system to offer advanced, yet user friendly, power management for laptops, including detection and configuration of ACPI...." am I correct in thinking that even numbered distros are released as officials and odds aren't?...thought I read that somewhere. thought I was the only one who does that kinda thing...lol Those were absolute must haves on my first install, needed the fami
