  7. You're very welcome. I'm thinking of buying a used unit to tinker with, install Linux on it. I might buy a Plll 733 for $100-200. Decisions, decisions:-)

    About U?

Hi Folks, I'm 47, married, with two kids, a ten year old daughter, and our baby who will be two in January. Like many here I've very happily migrated from other forums to make this website my main digital home. I am still astounded that people are so friendly and happy here. The mods do an outstanding job keeping the atmosphere here relaxed and open My wife, 45, is a legal secretary and works very hard for a busy law firm. Right now she's struggling with neck pain.......too many hours sitting in front of a computer. She had to take a day off on Friday, too much pain. She's hoping she ca
  9. Here's another command line tutorial, very good. linuxcommand.org
  10. Agreed. Linux is always my first choice for an OS. We've been spoiled by the stability, power of Linux. Linux rules!!
  11. Thanks. Yeah Mandrake10.1 is pretty good. I've been running Mandrake for a few months now, since July. I'm getting bored again though. I'm thinking about upgrading to something else. Maybe Fedora Core 3.

I see you've learned how to use tags! VERY COOL!
  13. Mine is a nickname for high performance gasoline and also a nickname for my favorite alcoholic beverage. Why did I choose it? I haven't got a clue
  14. If I had a choice I'd go with Mandrake 10.1 over Mandrake 9.1. The newer Mandrake has much better hardware detection.

  16. Here's another option if you don't have broadband or a CD burner. I've used this company for a year or two, they're reliable. They provide Linux CDs for a few bucks. You can order the latest version of Mandrake 10.1 for $10, including shipping, a 4 CD set. Discount Linux Cds
  17. Hey uberpenguin! I've also liked the look of Gnome 2.6, very stable at least compared to earlier versions. I kind of like KDE 3.2 just because it's less of a resource hog than Gnome 2.6. Good to see you on the boards again, man.
  18. SNDCONFIG is a legacy sound detection utility that should be located on one of your Mandrake CDs. Just fire up your software add/remove program in Mandrake 9.1. Use the search function and look for sndconfig. Once you've found it click install. The program will ask you for one of your install CD ROMs. Install sndconfig. Next you'll need to log-on as root. At the command prompt type this: #/usr/sbin/sndconfig Then hit your enter key on your keyboard. sndconfig will start up and try to locate your sound card. You'll need to know the make and model of your sound card to select the correct
  19. Ack! Thanks for the heads up, uberpenguin! I was thinking of upgrading to Fedora Core 3 after I do a RAM upgrade on my old unit. Are all ATI cards not recognized or just the Radeon cards? I've got an older ati card that has served me well on Red Hat 9 and now Mandrake 10.1.
  20. I would be laughing if I could understand it. Does Ballmer really think companies are going to sue the governments of those countries? Who wants to poor schmuck who tries to win an IP lawsuit against the government of China? Ballmer knows that companies probably won't go after China. However he's probably hoping his saber rattling may scare some U.S. or European firms so they are reluctant to adopt Linux. Which won't happen. But, it does show that M$ is finally waking up to Linux.
  21. Maybe a newer version of Knoppix would work for you. I'm using Knoppix 3.3 and I've found it to be excellent in detecting all of my hardware. I know Knoppix 3.4 has recently been released, you could try that one. You can download, burn 3.4 for free. That should detect all of the newer stuff on your computer. As I said previously the new versions of Linux out now are "very" user friendly. To help you get better at using Linux I suggest you find out all of the system specifications on your computer and write down the information. For example, name, make, and model of your video card, modem
  22. Yeah, I saw that article it gave me a good chuckle I think the boys at Redmond are actually waking up and starting to notice Linux.
  23. Sure a few years ago your comments are accurate, that Linux is very difficult. But, the newer distros: Mandrake 10.1, Suse, Fedora have very user friendly install routines. Even Red Hat 9 that came out a year ago was easy to install. Modems are a pain like jcl said. The newer distros readily identify your hardware and install easily. I think the newer distros are easier to install than windows. The advanced distros like Slackware, Gentoo, BSD are harder to install, true. I suck at those, I'm still learning:-) What I would do if I were you is get a cheap second computer, a used unit. Y
  24. Hi, Your sceen just freezes as soon as you boot from the knoppix CD? That's really weird. Have you tried your knoppix CD on another computer to make sure that in fact it does work? If you have then you know your CD works, and it isn't corrupt. If your CD doesn't boot on another computer then get another Knoppix CD. Your could also try typing F2 when the Knoppix CD first boots, the help screen will give you some intructions for manually typing in commands to launch x windows. If you're using a really old knoppix CD on a new system maybe it can't find the new hardware. Like iccaros said you
