  1. out of the five I have own I have only had one PSU fail (of course from then on I replaced them on day one). I have not had any problem out of any of them with the exception of the funky power switch on this one.

I found my first one at the dumpster (366mhz cyrix) it ran about a year before I replace the PSU and the processor with a 500mhz AMD it is still running to this day That was in 98 or 99. I will continue to buy them as long as I have to share a PC with my family. I don't feel cheated in the least. Statistically speaking there is no way any Commercial or custom computer maker can have 100% satisfaction they all send out a number of defective ones even the big names do it. I stand by statement that emachines make great entry level/ budget family PCs.

  2. eMachines are prone to PSU and Motherboard problems

Power supplies.....yes.I've had several Emachines over the years, and worked on a bunch more. Never have I had to replace a motherboard. Not once. Never had onboard video or sound go bad. Ever.

To the original poster...you might as well go ahead and replace the power supply now...you will have to eventually.

Borrow a Video card from a friend or another computer, test it and see if this solves the problem, before you buy one.

I've never heard of any MOBO issues either. They do then to eat Powersupplies.

  3. I got him on it Matt thanks. I was kinda wondering about the .cab files there. I expect most (un-learned) IE users to have a ton of useless toolbars. My next step is to head over to TomCoyote and actuall learn more about Hijackthis it is long over due.

  4. Hey Preston,

I actually had the same issue a while back and yes, there is a way to change it to the top.

    In Thunderbird

    Tools

    Account Settings...

Under you account info Composition & Addressing

Tick Automatically quote the orignal message when replying (if not ticked)

In the drop down menu select Start my reply from above the quote

    Ok

    That should do it B)

    B

    Thanks B

That was a bit annoying to others

Please help me review this I see that he does not have SP2. He told me he found several Viruses with AVG but did not send the names so I cannot tell if they are false positives or not. To be honest I work with this guy and don't think it is a legit install of XP this may account for not installing SP2.

  6. I use Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 as my primary email client. I have but one issue that up until now has not been an issue. When I reply to an email it ads the reply to the bottom of the page I would like to have it at the top. I have searched for the option many times to no avail. I think it is a issue of not seeing the forest for the trees. Please if anyone of you can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a copy of Knoppix? If you do you can use QTParted to remove all partitions and format the drive. Also hooking it upa as slave to another PC you can format from My computer by right clicking the drive and choosing to format it.

  8. I would like to build a computer built for graphics

I do alot of graphics editing like flash, adobe photoshop, Ulead photoimpact 3d max and video editing

also so i need a computer that is is able to have a firewire and usb 2.0 on the motherboard to plug in videocamera and digitalcamera

all ideas welcome and no i do not want a MAC

You do not need a super Computer for flash, photoimpact or photoshop. The key will be the RAM the more the better. Program control (this mean knowing what you have and why the heck it is running at any given momment) Everything does not need to start with windows. I am employed as a computer graphic operator and I also do not use a MAC. My work PC is just a AMD XP 2200 (1.7 ghz) with a gig of RAM and a ATI Radeon 9200 (128 MB) graphic card. I have open all the time Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe Illustrator, Streamline, and MusicMatch I feel no slow down at all. you may need more kick for the video editing that I would not know about.

    Preston

  9. you could always just add a stick of ram. if you put another 128mb stick in that would give you enough ram for just about any linux Distro

Thanks for the suggestion Dragon but there is one little problem....I only have 2 slots with 64 megs in each slot so I would have to buy 2 modules with 128 megs...I'm saving up for another computer but it will be several months.

Could you not just install to HDD? This would reduce the require ram to 32mb in ubuntu.

  10. if you buy commercial you should expect to get junk. I just know I will have to clean it out and do it. My Compaq Laptop I just did a clean install after I registered. Install all my drivers and avoided all the junk. Good thing Compaq gives you a actual copy of XP (on disc not a hidden partition).

And this is why you build your own computer....

    AMEN

  11. Subject: Amazingly Simple Home Remedies

    1. If you are choking on an ice cube, don't panic.

Simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat

and presto, the blockage will be almost

    instantly removed.

    2. Clumsy? Avoid cutting yourself while slicing

vegetables by getting someone else to hold them

    while you chop away.

    3. Avoid arguments with the Mrs. about lifting the

toilet seat by simply using the sink.

    4. For high blood pressure sufferers: simply cut

yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing

the pressure in your veins. Remember to use a timer.

    5. A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock,

    will prevent you from

rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit

    the snooze button.

    6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of

laxatives, then you will be afraid to cough.

    7. Have a bad toothache? Smash your thumb with a

hammer and you will forget about the toothache.

Sometimes, we just need to remember what the rules

    of life really are.

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it

doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and

    does, use the duct tape.

  12. turning on clear type option if it is not on is also a good Idea:

    Turn on ClearType Font-Rendering Technology

    Published: July 16, 2001

Submitted by Kevin Konikowski, Tolland, Connecticut

Get that extra text clarity you've always wanted. The incredible Microsoft ClearType® technology can be enabled in Windows XP to smooth all fonts at all sizes, making the whole system so much easier to read. I don't know how I lived without it! To turn on ClearType:

    1.

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Appearance and Themes.

    2.

Click the Display icon, click the Appearance tab, and then click Effects.

    3.

Click the Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts check box to select it, and select ClearType from the list.

    4.

Click OK, and then click OK again.

    Happy reading.

  13. If it's a CRT, set the refresh rate to it's highest level. That helps get rid of some of the "flicker".

Also, if you do alot of read, turn the brightness down.

75- 85mghz is usually high enough some monitors cannot handle the refresh rate higher. Usually the setting beyond capability will not be displayed as a option but I have seen dangerous refresh rate displayed as a option. I have my brightness down to 65% occassionally lower.

  14. actually to the audio file (ex: my brother) it can make a HUGE difference with some good speakers (ex: Klipsch or Bose) or good head phones.

Which I have both, Bose Puter speakers and Pioneer HDJ-1000 headphones. http://www.djdeals.com/pioneerHDJ1000.htm Theres somethings you can skimp on, other things I won't..I can afford the F-Xi's with no problem..If you can't afford a single CNote for quality, then unplug your puter and strap on that AM Mono to your ears and enjoy..

I have found that a decent set of Cans and speakers are far more important than a super high-end audio card. I have over the years bought some relatively expensive sound cards because I listen to and archive tons of Mainstream Jazz (no Kenny G here just real jazz) , Jazz Vocals, classical, and Opera. I can make due with the on board card for standard listening with a good set of cans. I link my PC to my stereo to Utilize my Cerwin Vega V500 speaker system and I connect through an external Sound card to avoid any transient PC noise as for the the Computer I have cheap little 2.1 Altec Lansing that I rarely use. My home cans are Grado SR 60 (they are the greatest but not good if you do not want to disturb others because they bleed bad) at work or on the go you cannot go wrong with a set of Koss PortaPro I will go on record and Sennhieser PX100s are crap compared to these, they have been around since 1980 and still the best portable around IMHO. Actually I find myself using them at home a lot also, they have some bleed like the Grados but not near as much. If you do not have a good set of Portables (ear buds are not my thing) I swear on my honor as a mid level audiophile you should get a pair. Yes they are ugly and kinda dated but I have had 5 friends and my wife get a pair after listening to mine (1 1/2 year with this set they keep getting better). man I lost sight of what I was posting for.

Bottom line is you will never get perfect sound reproduction with a internal card with electrostatic interference and transient noise and all. Buy quality and you can avoid the big price. But believe you me if it was a major difference I would shell out the cash without remorse.

  15. Ok so I'm getting old and lately have noticed that I don't see like I used to.After a few hours on the computer I am getting headaches and my glasses don't seem to work anymore. I am thinking eye strain. So.....could a few of you that have or do use BOTH give me some advice as to whether a flat panel LCD would be easier on my eyes? Not looking for brands or links, just opinions based on your experience. Bear in mind that I am NOT a gamer,so don't factor that in.

I've also posted this on the CFH board but don't expect much from that area.

Thanks in advance for any help.

85% of PC users have there CRT screen too bright you might try adjusting it also your refresh rate maybe too low. I find anything below 75mhz gives me a headache mine is set at 85mhz. If it can support it set it higher. Most modern PC support upto 85Mhz. I know people who get seizures at 60mhz.
