I have never tried that feature, nor would I allow it to install on previous versions.
I wish I had your forsight. I guess I wa curious when it first came out and never turned it off in the insuing versions.
Glad it is done now. I will reinstall without it next version.

If you are having problem with Opera using 100% cpu Cycles like I have this may help:
Most people who know me know I am a Opera fan through and through. IMHO there is no other browser that compares to it perfomance wise (CPU and Memory usage)
Lately I have had difficulty because of the 100% cpu usage. Not having the time to fully explore this has gone on for weeks (I had to use firefox which is good but I don't like it so well). Today I was tweaking while watching FreeMeter (great performance monitor with micro frootprint on system resources) as I go. I decided to explore the preferences in Opera. I have no MIC on this machine so as I was exploring I cam across the voice controlled browsing (never worked good) so I un-check it the CPU usage dropped to 0%. So I'm back in the saddle again.
Still in Love with Opera

The problem I am having in Opera is using 100% cpu cycles. I removed it and all register traces then reinstalled. TYhis worked until I restarted this machine then it ia back 100% cpu again. Funny thing is when I do things in opera that should up the cpu cycles (Max/min, surf etc) the cpu cycles actually go down.
TIA for your help

Take into consideration that you have not found any significant malware, which implies you have safe surfing habits in place that protect you before the stuff gets on your drive. I would be far more concerned then about the waste of time daily scans incur than any wear and tear on the drive (drives almost always outlast their usefullness anyway, no matter how they're used).
BTW, the "warning" about cookies is nearly always overblown (they are rarely malicious in nature -- and considering you don't "catch" anything else you're likely not visiting sites that use them in an objectionable manner). Using Internet Options / Privacy or a third party program to manage cookies is more efficient than running a scan and then deleting them after-the-fact.
As for CPU usage, the heat in the CPU is a wear factor for the CPU, but is not a deciding factor in hard drive wear & tear.
Amen! Like you said.
I would be very concernedd about my surfing habits if I found true spyware everyday. I run mine a mere once a month and a complete AV scan bi weekly unless there is a problem.

Thanks for the link I may try it myself. as far as the junk on the compaq mine included a real copy of XP sp2 / a driver disk/ and an extras disk so you can do a clean install with proper drivers then leave of the crap. That is if it is like my laptop.

Your sons new toy is terribly deficent in the RAM department. He will begin to feel drag in a matter of weeks if not days. He will not be able to perform more than 1 or maybe two function at a time with out signicant slow down. That is too nice a processor to not be able to utilize to full potoential.

If your friend has the same version of XP (Home or Pro) and it is OEM it will work on the HP using your activation key. If he doesn't have the OEM disk but it is Retail then you could do the alteration in creating the OEM disk from a Retail one as outlined here: Yea Or Nay. Remember you need to use the correct version (Home or Pro).
While you are at it slipstream SP2.
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windo..._slipstream.asp
Once you have the correct XP CD to use I would install fresh on the new drive without the other one hooked up. Once the install is finished install the mobo drivers and update XP. After all this is done slave the old drive to the new one and transfer your data and program executable files (if you saved them to a download folder like I do). You can then install your programs to the new drive.
the easy way to slipstream

Auto Streamer
I tried the technic in Yea Or Nay
works fine the worst you will have to do is call Microsoft and let them know you replaced the hard drive.

Is there a program that can take my mp3's and fill in missing info in ID3 Tags, make sure all of the artist names are same case, and arrange folders for them? I know im asking for lots, but i dream big =)
This will not do the ID tags automatically but it will help do it faster because you can do it by folder or individual MP3 it is a windows shell extention so all you have to do is right click the folder or mp3 file and choose properties /mp3-info and enter all you want including Album art and Lyrics hope it helps.

My son's Gateway Essential running w98se freezes on the splash screen when you try to bootup.
This started after I downloaded the new update for Avast.
I can use ctrl-alt-delete and reboot but it still freezes on the splash screen.
I have used F8 to go to safe mode and it still freezes on splash screen.
I updated all of his programs-AdAware, Spybot, Sun Java and ran them and Avast to have a clean system.
I then removed old restore points and made a new one on Go-Back before I D/L Avast update.
I have tried to use Go-Back to before I D/L new Avast update, still freezes on splash screen.
What do I need to do to fix?
Thanks.
Maybe a corupt MBR (Main Boot Record). Can you boot to safe mode? If so this most likly is not the case.
you can fdisk /mbr and it will rebuild it in MS/DOS mode. I'm just guessing that this is the cause it has been many years since I have used a 98SE machine. You sure he would not like a nice install of linux on that Box?
It is an option (IMHO).

Error 1920 service print spooler (spooler) failed to start verify that you have suffiecient priviledges to start system services
Could not start Print spooler service on local computer.
Error 1068: The dependencey service groupfailed to start.
I know this had somthing to do with my old LexMark printer and badly removed components such as LexBce.exe. I have deleted all left overs but still cannot start Print spooler. and I cannot reinstall the printet unless the Print spooler is on. Is there a way to repair the print spooler or break any dependencies it may have for the LexBce.exe?
TIA For your help
Preston
update: I have resolved the issue in a round about way. I copied the Lexbces.exe plus dlls from my laptop to sys32 and spool/drivers foldernow it all works but I would love to break the dependancy.
Thanks

Thanks Preston for the effort and all the good info.
However, without any editorial comment on my part, I present = http://www.emailbattles.com/2006/05/12/sec..._aadgdfdddh_ah/
Yeah I'm Not sold on the COMODO Anti-Virus as of yet but I'm testing it on another machine.
But I stand by the Firewall. I wish I could write all the technical ups and downs but I'm not that well versed I do know it works and work very well with very little system resources and I have seen an increase in surfing speed. While it is a little naggy in the learning stage it is IMHO not as naggy as ZoneAlarm in it's initial stages.
I will give the AntiVirus a few more months to get a seasoned before I pronouce my Opinion on it but I will say safe surfing habits in place you should be more than safe with it.
Good seeing your post friend

Given MS's habit of not completing it's products don't you think it is funny that Vista comes in a box with one rounded corner.
they cut corners on everything else now it has moved into the advertising.
The Box makes a true statement... "MS the king of cutting Corners"
