  1. My job only allows us internet access on a need to basis. I work for the one of the Largest telephone companies in the nation and no internet. I have to make a request to my manager to To get new logos and Late model cars from large corparations advertising sections. Now they allow us access to do certifications, and tutorials but after that or computers change the password to access. We have a tight ship. They know to the second what aps we are using and how long it took per ad. Anything that stinks of a .exe not installed by the company notifies the SA even at home. I understand the security they pride themselves in my building on the fact that we are the only major office that has never lost a day of work due to virus, but on the other hand we are not children and can be trust esspecially since we all know they monitor everything down to our internal e-mails. Just asked the guy they caught selling Bootleg DVDs. Many of his clients were employees and made there request by internal web mail (I do not approve of his actions or the companies strick review of every word typed in our web-mails). That brings me to the final atrosity we all have DVD roms at our workstations but we cannnot watch movies during lunch or breaks.

They final lifted the ban on Cellphone in the building.

By the way my company is it's own ISP they own it. I could get a discount on DSL but my nieghborhood in a mile outside ther service area.

    OK my rant is over

  2. Plus most of the faster drives are relatively small the Western Digital 740GD Raptor is the fastest HD available but it only comes in 74GB.

at 190 buck for 150 bucks you can get a Maxtor Diamondback 10 with 300 GB. The modest gain in speed VS giant storage capacity.

The seagate cheetah is the fastest hard drive actually. 15,000 rpms. Their 147 gb model is 1200 bucks though lol.

Thanks for correcting me. but the math still don't add up for performance to me.

  3. As joe suggested build as you go you do not need a huge stock collecting dust. If there is a swap meet or flea Market you can get too that would be a better venue and you will have a oppurtunity to answer questions about why they should buy from you and not Dell. Are you offering an OS? and if you are are these people who buy from you getting a true licenced copy of that OS? or a restore disk? to tech savy people this may not mean much but to the average joe (but not the irregular ones) they want the security of that disk. and no one wants to find out there installed copy is not legit.

I'm not entirely sure if this is the case, but maybe ubuntu doesnt echo anything when typing the password. When you press enter does anything happen?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Sorry I have had to sleep go to work and work on my wifes laptop. when I hit enter it takes me back to it again.

  6. Just stopped in quick to wish BestTechie A happy Birthday. We just had a good storm come through, power out and dropping 3 to 4 inches of hail. And they are saying to expect more to come. Sitting in a lull right now, but don't want to take any chances. So I'm shutting my PC down again. Have fun all!!!

    Oooh! it slipped my mind

    Happy Birthday Besttechie.

  7. I am wondering if you maybe have a virtual drive program which is mounting the CD as an image.

The other likely explanation is that the CDROM IDE cable is going bad and when it has become hot due to a lot of data transfer, the crimped end starts to expand a bit and the teeth no longer bite cleanly into the outer two wires which carry the insert notification and drive query data.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I was thinking the same (about going bad). I have no virtual drives install because many games will not allow you to install it with a cloning and virtual drives present.

Maybe I'll get a new DVD writer and solve this problem and offers some more flexability with backups. I like to archive music in a lossless format like Flac and Monkey (I like them both have not chose my standard yet... any suggestions as to which) so I would use less media per MB. Maybe one with light scrib.

Thanks Pete and all would made suggestions.

  8. Preston, my son had the exact same problem with a game and if I remember right, it was a Sim game!!!  While our problem was solved by him discovering Populus and me "hiding" the possessive game, I wonder if its a kink in the game itself. (now this is with me not knowing what "update firmware" means, you might have already checked out the game so ignore this if you have :) )

Have you tried going to the Sim website forum??  Another game wasn't playing nice with Mcafee Firewall and per the suggestions I got here, I checked and lots of players were having the same trouble.  I emailed Mcafee, and a week later, Mcafee fixed whatever the trouble was.

Why do you have to wait 15-20 minutes to turn the emachine computer back on? What happens when you turn it on sooner?  Really just curiosity here!! ;)

*and I'm on my first coffee, so "I hope this makes sense" right back atcha!

    Liz

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

if I turn the emachine back on before the time it will start only the fans and nothing else. thanks

The suggestion about the website is a great idea I should have thought of it.

  11. My daughter plays the SIMS 2 On this machine and while the game plays great when I eject the Disc it seems to be held in memory. without the disk in the drive I can explore it's contents. This is not so bad but when I go to play a game or explore another CD it still sees the SIMS 2 disc. I have to logout then back it to access. Now this does not apply to everything if I put in a Blank CD windows sees it and I can use BurnQuick or Nero to burn a disc but in my computer it still reads SIMS 2 and it's content.

this is what I have tried

    1. uninstalled driver

    2. Cleaned driver leftovers

    3. reinstalled drivers

    4. updated firmware

    5. tried ejecting the CD with right click

    None of this has help.

    it is a Lite-On LTR-48246S

    Machine Spec:

    XP Home SP2

    AMD Athalon 2200

1 gig PC 2100 ram (actually I think it is BWD compatible PC 2700)

Any Ideas because I'm stumped it is really not a big deal I also have a emachine with the same specs that runs great and never stutters but if I turn it off I have to wait 15 to 20 before I can turn it back on. Temp is fine all driver up to date. this has gone on for a year never had any other problems though and help on either would be appreciated.

Note: it is my bed time so if none of the above stuff makes sense forgive me.

  12. Preston, your list reminded me to comment on the great Christian music nowadays.  Years ago (Amy Grant and John Michael Talbot era) all "Modern Christian Music" was...well....boring!!  It all sounded the same and was "pre-school-sing-songy".  Early U2 tried to liven things up, but none of the other artists seemed to get the hint.  Give me the old Hymms and Gospel over that stuff.

Now there's Lifehouse and POD and the other great music thats on your list and Christian music is fun again.  That merits a "Praise God"!!

Boy, there are some impressive lists here!!

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    Liz,

I'm not much into old hyms and Gospel because alot of it back in the old days were quite depressing. When I finally got free of the legalitic views I was taught as a child

I discover by listen to lyrics that many of the groups that were shund by many churches as being of the devil (early era of Christian Metal core, punk, rap, even Jazz) they knew more about the glory of God, joy, faith, praise, and you name it than many of the Gospel/ inspirational artist. We were given talents to use in the manner that has been placed on our hearts by the Holy Spirit man can prevert it but at it's core it was designed to praise God and bring him glory.

I truly doubt God is going turn people away because they got a Gold Grill (teeth for those who don't know) and sag. Have green spiked hair, piercings, etc.

I get excited when a new group comes out and my friend here it, they grove to it and stand in awe when they find out what they are listening to.

(oops! sorry I brought a soap box in here  )
