  1. Stumbleupon.com hours of fun just surfing.

    Preston

hi preston. I ran spybot s&d the other night and it said that stumbledupon.com left a toolbar on my computer and a registry entry. spybot recognizes it as a baddie. let me know if you find anything. thanks.

let me edit this: I'm not sure if it was spybot, adaware, or asquare...anyway it said it was a no-no.

I foud nothing with Spybot, ewindo, A aquared, or Adaware. I have this PC locked down pretty tight so this may not be a indication of safty. I will with draw the link if it is a potential hazard. I thought mindless surfing from time to would be theraputic. sorry.

  2. nope, don't have a CD like that. Have to do it the hard way!

I'll keep a record of what I do in case I have problems and get

back on the BB here for more help if I need it.

I probably won't have the time to do all this till Wed next week on

    my day off.

    Thanks, everybody.........jr

This is what I would do it will take some preparation.

    1. Download AutoStreamer

    2. get a full copy of SP2 Get it here

    3. Get your XP CD

Use AutoStreamer to Slipstream SP2 into XP this will create a ISO file (which can be made into a bootable CD) if you do not have Nero (which is easier than most to burn a bootable file) To burn the ISO to disk Download a copy of CD burner XP Pro (free CD burning program that with burn ISO file)

    4. Burn the ISO file.

You now have a bootable cd Of XP with SP2 included already.

Use it to reinstall XP. Keep with your Original copy in a safe place.

    Poison

    Winger

    Living Colour

    Twisted Sister

    Judas Priest

    Cinderella

    .38 Special

    Autograph

    Night Ranger

Man this is a good CD

    * man I'll tell you what, it takes friggin forever to encode an hour and 13 minute stereo track to mp3.

JetAudio does a far better job plus you have the option to record in .FLAC, .OGG, or .APE along with the standards.

I converted tons of old Jazz from LP . Used audacity (could never get it perfect) RipVynil, and MusicMatch Jet audio is the best. Be sure your system wav level is not too high and play with the record levels in JetAudio it should only take a few moment to get right.

  4. heres an easy one...I hope...

I have this laptop from work...I want to get onto the internet real quick here at home to install some software (yes I work more than 12 hours a day)...I only have comcast cable...I unplugged it from my desktop and plugged it into my laptop, but it won't detect the internet...how do I set it up???

Did you get a Software cd when you 1st got Comcast? Usually you get a software cd that sets up the connection and everything for you from your ISP. If not, just connect the cable up to the PC i t is usually in and network the laptop and the other pc, and just share the internet connection (Conect to - right click your connection - properties - Networking (or advanced) - tick the box next to Share Connection over network (or something along those lines) :)

I never use Comcast's software it would not have work in this case. You must shut down the modem before you switch or it will not obtain an IP.

  5. If you have the money to invest in a new heatsink/fan, more case fans, and most likely a new CPU when you burn it out - you should just stick with what you have or just have bought a faster CPU in the first place

I believe AMD locked the clock speed to avoid re-tagging by some un-scrupulous PC builders. Back in the day you would get what you thought was a hot Athalon chip and what you had was a very very hot Duron. Done right most would never know but done wrong it was fried in short order with no warrantee.

  6. My best sence tells me the drive should work just fine in ME. I do not understand why on the pachaging it specifcally says ME is not supported. That is why I thouhjgt that was strnge.

To compare ME to 98SE is an atrosity. ME was a half backed OS that M$ id trying yo forget about. ME was ment to be a home version of Win 2000.

  7. how many fonts do you have installed? word loads ever blasted font you have on your system into memory when you start it. My suggestion is to get a good font manager and turn off the un-needed fonts you have installed. This can be tricky you must first determine what fonts other application use for display so as not to turn them off. This may speed things up a bit.

  8. I use photoshop and Illustrator as part of my job and I would have to agree you have far to little ram. While PS in itself would run happy with 256mb ram you also have Windows and many other components wanting to use that available RAM while 2gig would be over kill 512mb would be putting a bandaid on it. 1gig if you can handle would be optimal to function smoothly. This would push your performace to a level that you would wonder why you ever thought 256 was optimal. More ram is the best advice. Also if you use PS alot I would suggest a second Harddrive

(Nothing fancy or large I used an old 2gig for years) to use as primary scratch disk this improves PS performance esspecially when using filters.

on another note we are trading in our old Dell 1.8 ghz P4 (40g hdds 1g ram) at work. we will now have Dell Deul 19" flat panel monitors, Dell 3.6ghz P4s

2gigs RAM. 2x 80 gig Hdds 256mb nvidia GPU (exact model and specs not known just general) I just got the email that our CEO sign the PO and we took pocession of 30 system yesterday. I'm excited and wanted to tell someone.

  9. 1. You pay for it, it never comes and you find out you have no recourse against a vendor in Russia.

    2. You order it, it arrives and you find it is the Mandarin Chinese OEM version.

    3. You order it, it arrives and you find it is an OEM promotional version which expires in thirty days and then you have to buy a full license to access your files.

    4. You order it, get it and then start seeing mysterious charges appear on your credit card. By the time you get through canceling the card and disputing the charges you find you have a three year battle to clear your name and get new credit.

Ouch - definitly won't be doing anything like that

I knew something had to be bad, I just hate having to pay so much for programs :)

Did you check out the link I posted for adobe creative suite http://www.academicsuperstore.com/market/m...l?PartNo=731431.

Under 400 buck is the steal of a lifetime I buy all my software there. Do the math it is just as cheap as the questionable stuff on the site you posted.

  10. Nice find, I'll check it out... :D

rhema7, now that Dad's Estate is totally settled I may be down your way next month...

My guitar tech lives just outside Nashville and I need work done on one of my Basses....

We got plenty of room maybe your presence can displace an equal ammount of the local no common sense residents and we will be that much closer to the national level of normality.

  11. Well, no real building, just minor assembly.

I think they both work USB2.0 as well as network.

Just buy the drive and box and put em together and put it back in the box.

Nice if you have a need to access files from work ; no need to put em on flash drive or leave your pc on and run server software . Just save the files there and put on a username / password for access.

The weird thing is that all the preassembled NAS I looked at none of them have this internet accessibility.

That is really something to consider since I do run a FTP server It would give more flexability. Thanks Pete you have neve steered me wrong.

    {sorry hit the wrong button . Pete}

  12. hi preston you may need a few bunches of flowers

or a holiday in the bahama's to get back on the inside

    marty

Marty She settled for a 4.5 star hotel in Manhattan, NY for a weekend and a New Dooney & Bourke purse wti matching wallet. (did you know you have to register a purse?) The purse alone cost me $400. Before you all call me hen pecked (though no hen has lips like my wife ;) {this how we got 6 kids}) This is a combo gift she finishes her MBA this week so I promised her a trip the purse was a bribe.

    Preston

Sure you aren't up to building something ? Pretty simple, just four screws, two cables to connect. Same effort as installing a new drive.

Check out my post here about NAS with built in FTP, HTTP etc

I'm up to it but in her mind purchased is better. It is like this I forgot to take the trash out to the curb one week in 3 years now to my wife I'm unreliable and must be reminded every week. So I have destroyed my share of Hardware who amongst the tech savy has not but to her that make my builds suspect. She is a little better now since a friend who happens to be my SA (sys admin) told her he does not alway know how to approach things and how much he has messed up in the past month. I geuss the degree is the difference. SHe never questions my ADs because I have a degree in advertising.

Building may still be a option Pete.
